[Man Bites Dog is] a mockumentary, the terms are just used interchangeably now for whatever reason.

The trick is that it's, diegetically, a documentary fashioned out of found footage. That makes it really no different from Blair Witch Project - or, really, the vast majority of the films in the genre.

Films that present just an unedited tape are quite rare.

I really liked Hush thanks for the suggestion. Did not know it was by Mike Flanagan.

I was super turned off by the mask I think. I didn't like that they included a creepy mask because that was instant " Yeah, I don't wanna watch a Ghostface killer knock off that's just the entirety of the beginning of Scream".

Great movie.

What are some good examples of Gothic horror not made by Hammer studios? Ideally something in a similar vein as The Company of Wolves.

Roger Corman's entire line of Edgar Allen Poe films he did with Vincent Price. It's referred to as the Poe Cycle.

The Raven

The House of Usher

Tales of Terror

The Haunt Palace

The Masque of the Red Death

Tomb of Legia

Also,

The Premature Burial, but it does not contain Vincent Price.

Crimson Peak (I liked it, anyway)
I dunno if Sleepy Hollow is really "gothic," but it's definitely Hammer-ish
Roger Corman's Edgar Allen Poe movies (particularly House of Usher)

Sleepy Hollow, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, From Hell, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, The Others, Suspiria, Interview With a Vampire, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, Silent Hill, Black Death, Mama, Underworld Quadrilogy.

That's all I can think of that I would recommend.

I don't know how you feel about French lesbian vampire films , but you should at least check out some of Jean Rollin's works. Very gothic, very surreal, very dreamlike. At first it sounds like " oh these are just some skin flicks from the 70s" and well they kind of are, but they are still very good. Also, I would not call them like hardcore porn ,but more like 70s cheesy softcore sex scenes.

I'd watch Requiem for a Vampire and if you don't like that you probably won't like his other stuff.

I didn't know they were prevalent enough to constitute their own subgenre. Although in hindsight, it doesn't seem that surprising.

Really? Haven't watched it in ages, but, off the top of my head, I remember finding the main dude absolutely hysterical as your seemingly standard 'nice guy' protagonist character with his deep, thoughtful musings and lengthy monologues on human morality, what with him turning out to be a hypocritical arse like the rest of the village and still being incapable of shutting up.

I mean, yeah, it's also a horrifying and depressing, but that's von Trier for you.

Yeah there were a lot made, but most of them are not very good. Jean Rollin's works are the best ones. They're most of them like arthouse gothic vampire films. Some are set present day well present day in 1970s. I think one of his films there's just like no dialogue for a hour. It's good stuff. Very surreal and very trippy.

I think you would like Witchfinder General with Vincent Price.

You can't go wrong but Masque of Red Death is probably the best starting point.

Tomb of Ligeia is by far my personal favourite, but probably not the ideal start point, as it has a slightly different tone than the rest.

100% this. Going into Antichrist I knew what was going to initially happen, because of a review, and was expecting a bummer, but it was just too goofy to come off as anything but a joke. The whole movie felt very much like a deranged comedy. A lot of his films do.

I guess it's time for me to do a Lars von Trier marathon and see if I react differently. I haven't seen Dogville or Anti-Christ in years, and I've never seen Melancholia or any of his older works.

I doubt that I'll be guffawing down the aisle, but re-watching horror typically diffuses a lot of the shock value and opens up different reactions, usually humor. So, we'll see.

Now, to see if I can find a local library branch that carries it.

I'm a fan of Virgin Witch and The Blood Spattered Bride. I randomly found Blood Freak on some movie channel late one night, and that viewing experience stuck with me. I couldn't find a name for it for years, and the memory felt like a fever dream.

I've seen way more horror movies than anyone I'd be likely to meet in real life, the problem is that most of those came as recommendations from this thread, so I don't really have anything to offer here.

Most people here have seen Subspecies right? That's one of those movies that haunted my nightmares as a kid and I never even really knew what it was called because I just caught it randomly one night on some cable channel. Seemed very obscure for a bunch of years but now I'm seeing it available on various streaming services so I'm sure a lot of people have seen it.

I rewatched the first two recently. they're not very good, although the makeup and creature design is cool and the Romanian location shooting does add a certain something.

The various box art creeped me the gently caress out as a child walking through video stores, but I've never seen it proper. That vampire, Count Orlok and the one from The Night Flier have always been scarier to me than vampires from Fright Night or Lost Boys.

I bring it up fairly often but Roman is really drat good and I think maybe one other person in this thread has seen it. Lucky McKee/Angela Bettis' microbudget genderflipped companion piece to May (which a fair amount of people have seen). Really good script.

Snow Sharks is a bizarre DTV horror movie I rented a while back that serves as a fun documentary view of winter in Upstate NY.

I figure these fall into a handful of categories. There are a bunch of really good movies, beloved and often spoken about by people who have seen them, that nonetheless I suspect a lot of people haven't watched because they're old or actual cult films with all that entails or whatever. Stuff like Carnival of Souls or Picnic at Hanging Rock or the like.

Then there's "bad" but loveable movies that you'd have to be an absolute diehard for the writer / director / concept / whatever to see, like Rawhead Rex or the live action Uzumaki.

I don't think I've ever heard anyone here post about Faust: Love of the Damned, except for a friend I've known for over a decade who posts on SA but not in this thread.
