I sure wish he'd get it over with and officially end it if he's not gonna be into it. I mean, I can see why he wouldn't, you'd hate for all that money to just literally stop flowing in if people don't believe it's necessary any more. But seriously, start a new project. Let the old one die if it's not creatively appealing anymore. Doing it this way is like one of those relationships where you both kinda realize it's over but you don't want to have to pay all the rent yourself or you don't want to get a new roommate and you're willing to suffer through one of those no-sex, no-fun things for a couple more years until you get something new going. Or whatever.

It's his creative process, who are you to pass any judgement? And however long it takes - irregardless of however long it used to take - we're still getting free Achewood content out at the end of it. I'd like an infinate number of Achewood strips immediately, but I appreactie that something that good is made with care, and I'm happy to trust Onstad to make it by whatever lengthy process he sees fit. If people honestly believe its off the boil, or not updating regularly enough, then stop visiting the site, stop reading it. Its like people feel entitled to the strip, and if some aspect of its delivery doesn't please them, they feel entitled to demand it dies, or at least whinge thier faces off about it. Best comic I've ever read; everything else is incidental.

Oh whatever, the rear end in a top hat keeps a tip jar running on his inactive comic to try and suck a few more bucks out of his fans while he still is getting away with stealing from them already. He then has the balls to bitch about his fanbase that has supported his rear end for years. Just because someone puts out partially free content does not give them some magic free pass to act like an rear end in a top hat.

So you'd rather someone obviously flail creatively for your own gratification, because YOU need him to keep churning out something that clearly he doesn't care about with any regularity? I don't know how old you are, and I'm not going to judge but I'll tell you for a loving fact that there's a pretty big segment of people that hit their 30's and suddenly just do not give a single gently caress about what they did in their 20's. Some are able to figure something else out. Lots (the vast majority) cling to what they did either through fear or complacency. Money's coming in through the tip jar, so that's comfortable. It makes a guy scared to take the next leap creatively. It also loving sucks, a lot. At least once you figure it out. I went through the same poo poo and I think I'd be a much happier person today if someone had kicked my rear end into gear a good 4 years ago rather than me figure it out for myself last year. 3 years of feeling like absolute poo poo is not the most awesome thing in the world. The idea that you actively want someone to feel bad about what they're doing, rather than hope they can find a good place to be creatively and mentally is a pretty loving selfish idea honestly. It's real hard to do something new. I wish him the best at getting something new figured out, or get back into the groove with what's already been done but this middle ground of nothingness is not healthy in a creative or mental way.

You can't assume he's not doing anything. For all we know, he's working on some 300 panel strip, or a novella-length blog entry. He firmly stated upon returning that he's focusing on longer form and that updates will be released whenever he feels like releasing them. And since Chris Ware burrowed pretty deeply into his brain over the years & infected his style, it's resulted in strips becoming more ornate and taking longer to produce. I wouldn't be too quick to assume he's flaking, just taking his time.

Hey, could someone link me a specific comic that I can't seem to find in the search? It has Ray talking with someone about how things "used to be" for kids, with one of Ray's examples for how hard kids in the distant past being that they could easily "die from touching a red plant". For some reason, I thought of that phrase in the middle of class and had a silent laughing fit, even though Achewood normally just makes me grin stupidly. Just something about how it's too specific and too unspecific at the same time.

I think if Onstad was working on a huge Achewood-related project, he'd be smart enough to mention it. Like, seriously, if he has an actual Achewood-related creative plan, it should be obvious to him by now that the whole "zero communication with fans, random updates" thing is making him look like an enormous dumb baby. I still think he's working on Nothing (Achewood-related) and just refuses to tell anyone because he thinks it'll lose him whatever fan-income he has left. As if going the long, hard route to internet pariah hell he's chosen will be worth more in the end than a simple, mature admission of losing interest. If Achewood does end, he's got to choose how he'll be remembered at the finish: Creative Writing Legend, master and commander of one of the best webcomics of all time, celebrator of the English language and plays the guitar, to boot, OR: Squawling Infant who ran out of ideas, stole a bunch of money, and now shits his pants silently when people talk to him. Guess which one he's leaning towards right now. Please be okay Chris

Cobweb Heart posted:I think if Onstad was working on a huge Achewood-related project, he'd be smart enough to mention it. Honestly, I don't think he would. Maybe back in the day, but now, I dunno. I think not communicating often with fans is sort of his way of keeping a wall between himself and us, so he doesn't find himself back in the situation he was in, where he had no life and was constantly churning out new content for a community that would work him to death if allowed. He touched on it in his Google interview; he was literally producing updates via smartphone as he walked to the stage. Touch time with his "clients", paired with being the sole employee, meant he never stopped working. That said, fatherdog brought up the cook book again, which I still can't wrap my head around. Has he ever privately reached out to any of you who paid for it? I've never seen a public statement from Onstad on it. Is there some explanation out there for what happened and what he plans to do about it that I missed? Finally, would you feel satisfied if he, upon proof of purchase, remunerated you with access to premium services in an amount equivalent to the cost of the book?

My guess is that it's a thing that stresses him out too much, and is something he's just sort of subconsciously decided to ignore. Have you ever agreed you'd do something, then forgot about it, then it go too long until it would be awkward or uncomfortable to bring up again? That, plus mild depression, could result in criminal money management and business practices.

Right, but he can still pay people back, and should, if he hasn't privately done so. I assume he hasn't, because by now someone would have mentioned how he did; I can't imagine there's a vast conspiracy of people trying to make Onstad look bad, so that only leaves one possibility. That said, I don't get what his justification for not doing so could be. I assumed he was more ethical than that. Also, Jesus, he bragged about his Disney trip while closing down the shop and keeping the money from current transactions? What the hell? I totally missed that part of the saga. mysterious frankie fucked around with this message at 03:25 on Feb 2, 2012 |
