There is a documentary "Life 2.0" on Netflix (and Youtube) from 2010 that follows around some Second Lifers. One is a hambeast living in her parents' basement who makes a living selling dream homes and clothing as a much thinner avatar. Another is a married man who reveals to his wife that his avatar is an eleven year old girl.

Baring in mind the private islands ran a few grand a piece to own, there must of been some good money changing hands. The biggest and most famous SL person (circa 2008-9 at least) was Anshe Chung who was a 'real estate' person. She apparently was a millionaire or so. I think goons or some grieving group assaulted a live interview with her; there were floating cocks going across the stage and everything. YouTube it and I'm sure you'll find it, hilarious. I was never really into SL, but I did play it some with the goon presence that was known for being obnoxious at best, and for griefing at worst. The goons had a large area of land that was right next door to some of the land that Anshe Chung old, and she was pissed to have goons as neighbors. Her property values bottomed out because no one wanted to live next door to a 100ft tall robot that was bending over and spreading it's robotic rear end cheeks. I think there was a nightclub inside the anus...

The machine I used to all my griefing on 10 years ago was an Athlon X2 and it ran ok unless we were crashing a server. Inevitably you'd get into arguments with landowners and they'd try to convince you that your griefing pegged you as a loser. You'd explain to them that griefing was just a hobby and Second Life was their only life, so they were the loser. Then you go around and around for an hour while they get madder and madder. Probably the best reaction I got out of a landowner was completely accidental. I abandoned a truck with the word "AIDS" on it in some random spot because I was bored with it. An hour or so later I get a pm from a guy named Murky Bjornson bitching about the "garbage truck" I left on his lawn. I still remember his name almost 10 years later because he threw such a fit about it. Whenever I'd make a new account after getting yet another one banned I'd send him a pm to tell him I was still around. This is him: I should make a new account to see if he's still around. Most useful could be "aol://1722:random" which would bring you to a random keyword. Unfortunately, anything with the prefix 1722 does not work since it's just basically telling the AOL software to go to keyword "random" which doesn't work since it just brings up a browser window. If somehow I could sign on to 3.0 or 4.0 Or maybe somehow figuring out what that keyword's "hard" URL was. One funny thing I totally forgot about was after I installed AOL on this Win98 machine was all the poo poo it would leave all over the system. Well that would be awesome. No, you can just create a free AOL email address on AOL.com. If you can, make it 10 characters or less so it is compatible with old versions. Anyway, download AOL3.0 from oldversion.com and sign on as "Guest" and put that username and password in. If you don't want to go through the trouble of making an account, when I try to sign on as guest on AOL 3.0 thru 5.0, it IMMEDIATELY signs me off saying version no longer supported. So you can mess around with whatever trick you will use to get it to work, and you will know it worked if signing on as guest asks you a username and password. The only "bright ideas" I had so far was to hex edit the software in instances where it said 3.0 and I changed it to 6.0 but that didn't work. If you get this working you are a savior and a genius.

There was (is?) a SL goon grief vid on youtube which showed up in a favorites or SA old stuff thread which was a new corporate logo reveal the company was holding in SL. It was a virtual conference room with about 25 or 30 avatars standing around and a woman av a the front giving a little speech about the logo before using a control to pull down a curtain with the logo behind it. But some goon found the event, discovered there wasn't security in place or whatever, and put a picture layer between the logo and the curtain of a fat dude with no shirt on. So she gives the spiel and then pulls the curtain down (which had a built in mechanical gear winding noise) to reveal the fat guy picture. I'm probably not doing it justice but it cracked me up. A few of the employees started chuckling and I think the goon or goons were making comments like "Nice logo!". The woman took it in stride and just said Who put that big guy up there? and moved it out of the way. It wasn't some big rage thing but just timed and executed perfectly. Found this site of C64 games emulations. Not sure how much works but there is a shitton of C64 stuff out there. http://legacy.c64g.com/ Finally, messing with printers a little today made me remember just how picky printers and their drivers used to be.

I have an 1541 Ultimate II (which is a hardware drive emulator for that line of computers, yes such a thing exists and can be bought - The 1541 drives are not "dumb" like floppy disk drives most might know from PCs, they're complete computers with CPU&RAM and everything so emulating them is not *that* straightforward) hooked up to my C64 with a tiny, tiny SD-card inserted into that cartridge which houses pretty much any game of relevance (and quite a few not so relevant) which probably have ever been made for that computer. Still kinda blows my mind that such a thing is not only possible, but relatively simple and cheap to do with todays technology. Also comes with an optional and configurable RAM-Expansion which makes GEOS fly. Actually just hooked the machine up to play some Paradroid. E: can't overstate how weird that is. If anyone ever told me I can put these boxes and boxes of disks I had on a tiny chip of plastic not larger than my fingernail not too far in the future, I would have probably not believed them. Because XBMC has to run on "higher powered devices" and Plex can run on an iPad 1 without issue. Thanks for posting all the AOL screenshots, so much nostalgia for those 1.5-2.0 era icons. I remember I begged my parents to sign up for AOL when I got that issue of Nintendo Power about the NINTENDO POWER SOURCE! on AOL. Our computer was old and wouldn't even load the fancy Diddy Kong images on the site until we upgraded. Antagonist Inc and Hecklers Online were where I spent most of my time. Hecklers had daily comedy top tens and contests you could enter, I think I won enough points to get the infamous Jolt Cola Jockstrap. Antagonist Inc was an elementary school game nerd's dream that openly encouraged dumb console warfare flame battles. You could change your name to ANTTato or whatever and pay 10 bucks to have some bad artist draw you a portrait to go along with your profile. I think ANTStoic was the N64 guy, no idea why my brain retains this poo poo. There's an example of it here: https://web.archive.org/web/19991010051605/http://www.ant.com/antprofiles/mirage.htm I think both were owned by the same company and both made a rather sad effort to try and transition to the world wide web and escape AOL. ANT was far too late, as sites like N64 and IGN were already around and providing amazing tiny screenshots of Blast Corps. The AOL website is so lovely, I turn on developer mode in Firefox and keep seeing it's returning HTTP "420 unused" errors, which doesn't seem to be a real HTTP error code so who knows what it means. This garbage wiki page claims to help you deal with these errors with useful tips like "try another browser" and "do a virus scan". It's not like I'm the first person on the web to have gotten those errors but I haven't seen any useful responses to any of the complaints on the web yet. So has anyone done this recently and if so what browser did you use? It seems like it's actually a modern site, i.e. I wouldn't want to try using a really old version of Internet Explorer like 5.5 which AOL 6 installed for me. It would be cool if I could go "hey 420 is a funny error code " but this is really pissing me off.

Do you remember the dark days of 2007? When a volatile mixture of rampant speculation on virtual assets, unscrupulous and possibly criminal activities by shady individuals, and little to no regulation or enforcement, led to a collapse of major financial institutions that required external intervention to stabilize the entire economy? Oh wait, you thought I was talking about America? No, no. I'm talking about Second Life. The Wall Street Journal posted:Linden officials won't say how much money has been lost, but a run on another virtual bank in August may have cost Second Life depositors an estimated $750,000 in actual money. The story of the collapse of SL's private banking market fascinates me still, nearly a decade later. It's certainly my favorite crazy story from that dumb game, even more then Cosby cubes and attacking Anse Chung with flying dicks during a real media interview.
