HM 21st December NJPW Road to Wrestle Kingdom El Phantasmo, Gedo and Taiji Ishimori vs Robbie Eagles, SHO and YOH. Real enjoyable trios match that leaves me hype for the Wrestle Kingdom Jr Tag title match. Exactly what it needed to be.

Ah gently caress it MOTYC 21st December NJPW Road to Wrestle Kingdom EVIL and Hiromu Takahashi vs Tomohiro Ishii and Will Ospreay Seeing the earlier HM before I saw the show is what got me to watch this instead of skipping like I was thinking and honestly? Super glad I did, it's a loving fun show, there was even a interaction between Honma and Makabe that felt exciting. Exciting is the word for this match. Right from the opening bell this poo poo goes wild with Hiromu and Will doing some daft but dope sequence of counters and reversals and then they both tag out and two chunky lads come in and proceed to run into each other and it's like the two things I most love in New Japan in one match. This match doesn't actually matter but Ospreay, Takahashi and Ishii aren't guys with much of an off switch. It's Hiromu's third match back and he's like he's never been away, it's incredible. I dunno what else to say, I loving loved it and desperately want Ishii and Ospreay and Hiromu and EVIL to be full time tag partners in the future because they just gelled so awesomely

Quick question on that: what do we do with matches that happened in 2019 but don't air until 2020? I don't know if many things that I'd nominate of that type would make the list (although Gatoh Move has surprised me) but there are a few big shows which happen late in 2019 that probably won't make tape until January.

A couple HMs from AEW Dark on 12/17. Bea Priestley vs. Kris Statlander Chuck Taylor, Trent, & Orange Cassidy vs. Jack Evans, Angelico, & PAC I have now rated 963 matches that occurred this year. I took about 4 months off from wrestling earlier this year as well. I probably won't make 1000, unfortunately.

HM 3rd December NOAH Starting Over Night 7 Dragon Bane vs El Hijo de Canis Lupus It's really just a lucha exhibition on the undercard of a NOAH Korakuen show but they really got the crowd into it by doing the sort of mad spots you normally only see on lucha indies. If you like high flying action and have a spare 13 minutes, give this a look. HM 3rd December NOAH Starting Over Night 7 GHC Junior Heavyweight Championship Chris Ridgeway vs HAYATA (c) The junior rivalry between Ratel's and Stinger continues. Ridgeway ended up looking real good here, he kicked the bejeezus out if HAYATA's leg at every opportunity. MOTYC 3rd December NOAH Starting Over Night 7 Go Shiozaki vs Katsuhiko Nakajima AXIZ are the current GHC Tag champs and are probably #1 on my list for tag team of 2019, but here they face off one on one in a match labelled as a 15th year anniversary, as they both debuted in 2004. Despite it potentially sounding like a meaningless exhibition the tone is set even before the bell: Nakajima lands and stiff kick, Shiozaki replies with a big job, and then they shake hands. Both men end up with red raw chests from big strike exchanges. There's violent slams and suplexes, big lariat, leaps from the top rope, a hug at the end while the loser is still on the mat. They gave everything I wanted. Two absolute pros. Post match stuff rules too, with the winner challenging Kaiyomiya for the 4th January show. Should be a banger. MOTYC: Mio Momono vs Takumi Iroha, Marvelous, 3rd November 2019 (available on Marvelous's streaming service at freshlive.tv/marvelous: the first half of the show is free but the half with this isn't) Could type a million words about this but I'll try not to: its Mio's return match from being out for a year with a knee injury against the ace of the company and it was very good. A lot more stiff than I expected which was foolish: after a relatively friendly grappling exchange early Mio took offence at the way that Takumi broke when they were in the ropes and slapped her hard across the face and from there it was on: lots of stiff kicks and other strikes. I liked the ending stretch as well: you had Mio throwing everything she had at Takumi with forearms and other strikes but Takumi wasn't really affected: you got the impression that she could have ended it whenever she wanted but she almost wanted Mio to prove herself first: and that led to the draw - not the sort of thing I'd usually like but it really worked here. I also liked that it didn't go down the usual road of an injury return match (see Hiromu's for an example of that): Takumi targeted the knee but when it didn't work she moved on to just trying to beat down Mio more generally: and they didn't do the obvious finish but did something different which I like. Also had possibly the hottest crowd I've ever heard on a Shinkiba 1st Ring show because for them this was a massive match: Takumi Iroha is the ace of Marvelous, is dominant in that position and everyone accepts that but for everyone in that crowd Mio was their favourite: first Marvelous trainee which is important, incredibly likeable, plus coming back after a major injury which if anything improved her position. She had a single close near fall all match and after Takumi kicked out you can here people in the audience screaming as they are at other points in that match: its unlike anything in modern Joshi and honestly you have to probably go back a long time to get anything like that sort of crowd for a show. A lot of that goes to Mio: someone on twitter made a point which I totally agree with: she demonstrates so much self-confidence that she almost seems bigger than she actually is (4 foot 11 so quite small) and that you buy in to her being able to beat whoever since you can tell that she believes that she can win: a self-assuredness like that isn't something that someone who's wrestled for less than four years should have but she's had it almost since day 1 and its what makes her so great. Sadly she tore an MCL in her elbow three weeks later and is out for three more months - but this time at least its not a year!!

All I'll otherwise add is the Twin Gate match was interesting to watch with the hindsight of knowing who the second demon is. It's not telegraphed but one of Tribe Vanguard sure gets isolated and beaten down by RED a lot more than other. Finish was so great.
