Nah, Cain wasn't actually trying to win. Trump might actually have a chance at the nomination and hasn't backed down now that the spotlight is on him. Every other fringe 2012 candidate burned out the second the media started looking at them.

Like I've been saying, Fox News and other shapers of right wing opinion need to turn on him, mostly together and in a sustained fashion. What's called "the fear machine" needs to be pointed at him. They normally do this to Dems. You can even tell when it's happening, because they're all using similar talking points and narratives of attack. They haven't done this yet to Trump, and I'm not sure they're ever going to. Outfits like the National Review, NYP, or WaPo, or whatever -- they don't actually shape opinion of the base. These outfits are just tools that the opinion shapers use when it suits them.

What's even crazier than Trump is that his publicly stated views, for the most part, are actually less crazy than what your standard Republican candidate thinks. Trump just sounds crazier than other Republicans, because not everything he says is couched behind dog whistles or whatever. I guess that's more sad than crazy, but there you go.
