I've used lovely sprinkler solenoid wire before because it's the only thing I had in the shed. Works great. e: More helpfully, any wire will work. Go to the biggest hardware store near you and buy a few metres of the cheapest copper wire they sell. The ground cable has no bearing on sound quality, it just has to make a connection. I didn't bother going out to any stores this year. The only record I was interested in from the list I found was the My Morning Jacket single from the Newport Folk Festival. What are my options for finding this now? eBay at gouged prices?

I didn't go out either. I did put in $70 worth of orders from Deathwish and Top Shelf Recs, however. Has anyone heard anything concerned The Man With the Iron Fists OST? I think it officially came out October 22, but I haven't received it or heard anything yet.

I've got a post in SA Mart but I'd thought I'd try here too. If anyone has a copy of Moon Colony Bloodbath (Mountain Goats/John Vanderslice) they'd be willing to sell I might consider taking it off your hands. Let me know via PM or respond to my thread in SA Mart. My ebay searches over the past year have yielded nothing.

In my previous Black Friday post, I neglected to show off pretty colors: I'm also totally in love with the packaging and art for Hot Sauce Committee, Pt. 2. The "Clepto" thing is an iron-on. Hell, even the download card has a certain touch of humor. The whole thing feels like it was put together with a lot of care and love. It's got weight- a far cry from a lot of the albums you find today that are nothing more than an LP in a thin sleeve. To me, this is pretty much a textbook example of "why buy vinyl." gently caress, now I'm bummed out about MCA again.... Also, the Urban Outfitters edition of Hot Chip's newest on clearance- because clearly, that store needs more of my money. trilobite terror fucked around with this message at 06:12 on Nov 26, 2012 |

I only ask because there are times where I think about selling this one and buying a bunch of other records with the money, including a remaster of Nevermind. That said, I would never go through with it. I just keep on spinning the original.

I feel so dirty buying records from Urban Outfitters or Hot Topic, they have got to be as bad as buying your stuff at walmart in terms of how much of your dollar makes it back to the artist. Hell I don't even shop at HMV because I try to buy everything direct from the band/label or an independent store. But half price deals change everything.

I mean the label/band might make a bit more off of a direct sale depending on the deal with their distributor, but every record store buys the same records at the same price and the same profit margin as any other store, and the artist gets paid the same amount regardless. Which isn't much. Urban Outfitters is actually great for labels because they buy a large quantity outright to justify the different colored pressing. Most other stores buy records and if it doesn't sell they have a window where they can return it, which is really irritating. Mr. Stepmom fucked around with this message at 11:43 on Nov 26, 2012 |

As someone whose job it was to return unsold product at an independent record store, let me just say that while it may be irritating, literally every independent record store would be out of business in a year (or at best would have a selection of new product shittier than Best Buy) if labels stopped allowing returns. Many of them have actually started doing this, specifically with LPs, and it puts a lot of pressure on buyers to avoid taking anything remotely risky, which is the cool thing about record stores in the first place. You won't discover poo poo at Urban Outfitters. You could discover a great record every day at a solid indie shop if you look hard enough. Lastly, saying that Urban Outfitters is "great" for labels is pretty misleading being that its probably great for like 2 of them. Edit: Do you work at a label, by any chance?

Alot of independent businesses try and take advantage of drop shipping and just-in-time inventory. I don't know about record stores, but, it looks like while they can't justify that infrastructure themselves, that's what they have been using labels for. Magazines and books work in a similar fashion IIRC. From what I was reading, they stopped taking returns just to try and wind people out of the business, but, that was years ago. If that's still an ongoing practice to try and fight the "niche market" that's formed here, I don't quite get it. Like blumpkinbliss is saying, it's something to 'discover' new music and artists, or take a chance on an album that at least looks cool, which is hard to do online. I know as I get started picking up albums, I'm going for bands and titles I'm familiar with, like MGMT or Sunset Rubdown. Later on after I've picked it up I'd love to start to browse singles and such, which you just don't get from an online superstore. Pop market looks cool and all but I don't have a soft spot for Ozzy or AC/DC, those are all big market names and not really anything new.

Pop market looks cool and all but I don't have a soft spot for Ozzy or AC/DC, those are all big market names and not really anything new. I find the opposite, completely. With the new era of music news and being able to follow music blogs, facebook feeds, and twitter accounts, I have access to more new music than ever before. I don't listen to major label stuff so going to a music store generally doesn't really benefit me, especially if I can't take it out of the package and listen to it. I do almost all my record purchases online directly from independent labels or from the artists themselves. Occasionally I pick up something expensive from Amazon for free shipping. I try and buy records at shows, too, where I usually get good deals. Really I wish people would skip the mall stores and buy directly from independent labels to support the artists / labels but I'm not sure that's possible with the record collector community given the way everyone typically buys the same 10 old albums over and over.

Almost all vinyl is non-returnable. Major label vinyl is always one-way and most major indie label (your Matadors, Merges, Sub Pops, etc.) is as well if it's ordered through somewhere like ADA or RED (read: Warner Bros and Sony's distribution arms that handle a poo poo-ton of indie labels), though that may vary if you order direct. Some of the smaller distributors (like Revolver and I think Forced Exposure) do allow returns on vinyl. Next time you think it's super lame that your store didn't stock what you were looking for, that's probably why. Unless you're in an area with a population big enough to support an record store (independent or not these days; everybody's hurting in music retail), you should probably special order a copy if you're not going to buy it online.

I just realized I don't have any Beatles LPs in my collection which is a drat travesty if you ask me. I've decided to take up what I suspect will be a very expensive and arduous task of collecting my favorite records from their catalogue. There are just way too many reissues and whatnot, so I've come here to ask advice. Here are the albums I am most interested in getting (preferably in mono but I'm not sure what all is released/feasible to acquire): - Abbey Road - White Album - Rubber Soul - Revolver - Sgt Pepper - Let It Be - Magical Mystery Tour (anything else will be considered a bonus, these are my favorites though) I was hoping for advice on how to get the best value (best condition, best mastering/mixing etc) on these titles and where I might search for them (discogs? ebay? retail?)

For the Beatles LPs, the newest issues are stereo, but for the later albums that's pretty meaningless. I have Abbey Road and the White Album, and they both sound really good. It's probably a lot easier to get those than to try and hunt down original pressings. But if you rather have the originals, check out the Steve Hoffman forums. Just search around there, and you can find threads on various pressings and all that. Sometimes, they go really crazy audiophile bullshit there, but that's just the territory we live in.

I'm OK with a current issue pressing as long as it sounds good (so many vinyl re-issues these days are just plain lovely sounding - worse than CD etc). So there is a currently released version of White Album that is pretty good? Stereo is fine for those. I do care about audio quality obviously but I wouldn't call myself an audiophile by any stretch. Thanks for the tip on that forum. edit: does anyone here have the stereo box set - http://www.amazon.com/The-Beatles-Stereo-Vinyl-Box/dp/B0041KVW2K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1354035671&sr=8-1&keywords=beatles+vinyl The lazy bastard in me is thinking maybe I should just suck it up and buy this thathonkey fucked around with this message at 18:02 on Nov 27, 2012 |

Thanks for the tip on that forum. I asked earlier but I haven't really dug through any other information outside of amazon reviews but I'm scared to buy that box set due to all the mixed reviews on bad quality control. Apparently, the pressing plant just did a horrid job making sure the records were pressed cleanly. Lots of complaints about Abbey Road just being completely unlistenable due to all the surface noise and pops. I have a bunch of the originals but it would be nice to get the entire box set, all nice and pristine and not discolored and scratched up like my parents' copies.

Yeah from the Amazon reviews it sounds like the sound quality on the mastering is great but that unfortunately, even if your set is shipped in perfect condition, the discs within could be badly warped, scratched, finger printed, etc. Blah... yeah I don't think I'm gonna do a $300 gamble because that would drive me loving crazy. I wonder if the individual reissues, which I assume are the same masters, fare any better? It is way more expensive to buy them individually though, of course.
