Mr Sinister took over the X-Men by injecting his DNA into them when they died and were resurrected, starting with the Quiet Council leadership. Eventually, they decided they could be Sinister better than he could and ousted him. After some centuries, Emma Frost has become Red Diamond Empress. This is her discovering that Sinister is still alive and moving against her. They even had a big annual devoted entirely to it that was pretty drat great. And then that lasted for a really short time but she still hung around as a side character. drat shame really because Ultimate MJ was really boring.
