Thing is I really don't want to spend ages and ages loving around with my keyboard, which is honestly why I didn't get the Kinesis or something like it to begin with - if Microsoft had ever released a version of the Natural 4000 with mechanical switches I would have been all over it, but since they didn't I had very few choices for ergo + mechanical without getting into all the specialty keyboards. The ErgoDox would just take that to the extreme, and while I like the concept, it's just not something I want to spend time on. It's like how I used to read motherboard/GPU reviews intently and care deeply about the components going into my computer, and now, while I haven't gone all the way to just buying a computer from Dell, I'll basically just look up what a decent motherboard/GPU is at the time I'm building the machine, buy it, and not think twice. I just don't care anymore.

Yeah I sacrificed the mechanical aspect and bought the microsoft one, I've gone through 3 of them now in the last 7-8 years (maybe longer?) and they've only broken because of my dumb rear end; it's my favorite ergo keyboard that doesn't cost a fortune.

Only real issue I have is that stupid scroll wheel/zoom thing but that is just appearance.

I bought a used Corsair K70 with a broken spacebar stabilizer, the keyboard thread here pointed me right to where to buy a replacement. If it is just the keycap that is broke (the stem is fine), hitting up ebay and you'll easily be able to buy a single replacement keycap that might match your existing set. Or you can get a new set and start down the rabbit hole.

And boy howdy motherfuck is it a pain in the dick right now - it turns out I've been hitting the c key with the wrong finger for 20 years, and that is a loving bitch of a thing to unlearn. Plus the keyboard layout is loving weird with the thumb clusters. The Internet says I'll learn to love it in a year (sounds like Stockholm Syndrome to me), and maybe I will, but for now I feel like I'm 8 and learning to type again. Like many others I still use the Microsoft Natural 4k because I'll still take the keys being in their correct locations over mechanical switches. My ideal keyboard would be identical to the Natural 4k except it would have mechanical switches, remove the superfluous extra buttons and move the keypad out to a separate unit. The calculator button and volume control buttons can stay though.

The rabbit hole I spoke of it the vast market that is keycaps. They go from a simple style that would mimic OEM stuff all the way up to full artisan styles. As far as I know every mechanical switch out there lets you change the keycap. Cherry is the most abundant (and most copied), so keycaps for those are the easiest to find. They are a simple + shaped stem and new keycaps just pop right on, though use a key puller. The other types have their own sets, but are generally more expensive because they are small batches comparably to a Cherry type keycap. You also have to be aware of the sizes of the caps. My Corsair K70 uses Cherry switches, but the spacebar is a larger size, so if I were to need a replacement I'd have to get it from Corsair. Not horrible in that they sell a full keycap set for 30 bucks. The market for keycaps is, well you could get lost in it pretty quickly. They range from cheap thin caps to doubleshot with texture. Different font styles and placement. Don't forget if the keyboard has a backlight and how it will show through the cap. Prices can go from 20-30 bucks for a basic set all the way to the hundreds for special/artisan/limited sets. I did a quick google, as I was curious if something new has come out for ergonomic mechanical, and the only one I found that doesn't look like an Ergodox or some oddball variation is the Kinesis Freystyle Edge. It says it's a standard layout (no thumb clusters), Cherry switches, with backlighting even. It does not have a Numpad however. A bit pricey to me, in that it starts at 219 bucks (200 on Amazon) with Cherry Reds (clicky clicky), but if you are in the market it is something it least, maybe. They finally replaced the compliance person that Angry Boss ran off and she's having the gall to ask us to do things to stay in regulatory compliance and everyone is acting like it's the end of the world and she wants us to sacrifice our children. I can't wait until we get a functioning HR apparatus and someone tells Angry Boss it isn't appropriate to scream at hourly employees and threaten to kick their asses.

We have a dedicated team working on Grafana dashboards, and they keep shoving more and more poo poo into this one dashboard everyone uses, and it's killing the hardware we're using for some wallboards around the office (Raspberry Pi 3). I sent them an email about working with them to help develop a more streamlined wallboard, and their response was "Just use a different browser!" Yeah, same thing happens when I try other browsers. I'm pretty sure it's this page firing off hundreds of queries every minute for All the Metrics Ever, and not the browser that's the problem.

A whole team that does nothing but grafana? Man that's a sweet gig. I imagine it doesn't have much job security because once management realizes paying several salaries to manage graphs is not profitable they will be made redundant real quick, but I can't fault someone for exploiting it as long as possible. Our grafana setup is something I spend 15 minutes a month on when someone comes up with a new query they want a graph for, but only if I'm not busy on something else. And yeah grafana breaks down badly once you overload it, those ajax calls get real heavy real fast. If the dashboard needs a mousewheel you should probably start to think about what can be cut.

The support for a SaaS product we use keeps generating new ticket numbers every time they escalate or transfer a case to a new department. I'm certain it's to keep their SLA down and I'm getting sick of it.

So the main reason for having a ticketing system, to track the lifecycle of a case, is completely nullified by their system?

Actually, I think it's more akin to a "squad" or "tribe" or whatever the latest buzzword is that refers to "a team made up of people from other teams that now also work on this one particular thing". I think they're also helping with system metrics. And yeah, that's what I've been saying for months now. There was a point where it got more manageable, but now they're overloading it again and it's just a mess. I'm almost ready to just learn the system myself, create my own Actually Good Dashboard, and give them the middle finger.

Joe schmoe walks up and wants to graph every metric in the world? Spin up a new one, give him admin, and forget it exists. No one's been able to break my backend storage.. yet. They didn’t think it was right that a month old ticket could get escalated to a high priority and blow that months SLA. Maybe if you didn’t sit on tickets for 6 months they wouldn’t get escalated? Maybe try for an initial acknowledgment in hours or days instead of weeks?

Pissing me off: State-run student discount site which 1) Only lets you download installers for 30 days after purchase by default 2) Makes you pay more to get an "Extended Access Guarantee" of 60 days or 24 months at $12 or $24 respectively 3) Fails to extend the "Access Guarantee" if you purchase one of the extensions with an error reading "Invalid Order Item - Invalid Order - Access Guarantee Retrieval may only be ordered if there is an item on the original order with an expired Access Guarantee" directly after a license check which says "Usernames match and there are products to extend!" Why would you do any of these things except to grub as much money as possible from students?
