As someone who played Link's Awakening well before LttP, I much prefer the more compact and streamlined feel. LA isn't perfect, but I always felt LttP gets bogged down a with some pacing issues and some really annoying dungeon designs. Particularly the late game emphasis on your frustratingly limited magic meter (even with the upgrade).

I'm aggressively wrong about everything!
I checked out what the story of Termina is as apparently described by the Zelda encyclopedia (which apparently has reams of straight factual errors, so I'd recommend completely disregarding it as an authority), and I think you could make a good game by leaning fully into that concept, because it's a pretty neat concept: that the Skull Kid with Majora's Mask turned up in a different world and turned it into Termina, and the result is a mashup of Skull Kid's memories and feelings about Hyrule, Majora's about the civilization that made it and/or sealed it away, and the remnants of what they started with. If you leaned into that and actually made a game out of it, instead of claiming that Majora's Mask is that, I'd be fully on-board with that game because it sounds amazing.

And I think part of what makes me feel that way is Link's Awakening proving that 'it's all a dream' doesn't have to be a lovely, cop-out twist. And all it takes to make it good is to do one of the following, both of which LA did:
1. Don't have it be your dream,
2. Put the reveal in the middle, not the end.

I think a lot of that meta stuff dovetails nicely with the (IMO, superior) theory that eschews any concrete timeline (even though I know from Wind Waker onward they've constantly inserted glaring indicators of it) in favor of interpreting the games as continually evolving stories. Y'know, literal Legends of Zelda.

But I'm also the rear end in a top hat that liked the whole "always a man, a lighthouse, and a city" stuff from Bioshock Infinite, so :v:

BotW feels like it moves from the canon timeline split exhausting bullshit back to the more mythological endless story, and is better for it. There are clear references to stuff that happens in different "timelines" so I read it as "it's so far in the future from the other games that everything basically converged at the same point, let's never talk about this again"

That's kinda how they take it, too; BOTW takes place in all three timelines, no real explanation of how. Not sure how they attempt to explain the fact that we see all three of Ganondorf's canonical deaths (Original LoZ, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess) and none of them square with his presence in BOTW or its sequel teaser, but given Adventure of Link was all abut stopping the return of Ganon then it's not exactly insurmountable.

I'm spoiled by Smash Bros having so many characters and generally making them play distinct that now I'm giving Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order poo poo because of it and I'm not even playing the game!

Aside from it looking like they're doing the Infinity Gauntlet story again, it seems kinda blah. And not even just the details. Iron Man can catch on fire, you seem way too easy to get knocked over, picking up an explosive canister just completely nullifies your ability to fly, it's a lot of very odd decisions going on here.

I feel like in the teaser for BoTwo they sort of reference his TP neck snack? Either way eh, Zelda references the fact that he resurrects/respects reincarnates so whatever

Dishonored 2: I really hate it when a sequel makes character progression more complex than it needs to be. In the original you had 10 powers which had 2 levels each. Now every power has an elaborate skill-tree full of poo poo that seems really contextual in use. The bone-charms where a bit weak in the first game: you had the godly power to choke out enemies faster and then had a bunch of buffs that weren't too game-changing. In Dishonored 2 there are even more loving bone charms to collect and even an elaborate crafting system. What makes this complexity overkill is that in the 9 levels of the game there 2 where you don't have access to these systems: The first level where you're out on your rear end and the seventh level which is all about time-travel instead.

What other games have systems that feel awfully complicated despite their limited use in the game? Like how MGS2 tells you to get good with sword-fighting in the finale when this was previously a stealth-game before now. Or how that lukewarm beat em-up Remember Me advertised these memory-altering minigames like in Inception, only for there to be a grand total of four of these puzzles in the entire game.

I thought you were going to say the largely lackluster make-your-own-combos system and not the memory remixes, but I guess that's more fundamental to like 90% of the game.

And it at least worked out since that led pretty much directly into Life is Strange.

I agree, except to say that the bone-charm crafting is neat if you take it for a second playthrough and use it to power up whatever cool thing you really want to make a gimmick of. Far as I can tell, it's main use is for basically building superpowers if you go all into it and know what you're doing.

I tended to really just use the movement power and Domino as Emily, since Domino was crazy fun and seemed perfect for making those hilarious moments you end up telling people about.

But the game doesn't like it when you make a robot animal friend out of creatures you're supposed to kill during quests.

OWL being an incomprehensible mess to watch has been something they've tried to overcome for years now.

Pretty sure the weird colors are because each team uses their own official team colors skins when playing; they've gone all in on the sports teams angle. Of course that misses the point that sports jerseys are all roughly the same size, shape, and attached to humans that are all roughly the same size and shape, and none of them are teleporting around, turning invisible, or whatever in the meantime.

All Princesses are Tyrants

I got nostalgic for Runescape and fired up the newer, better looking version recently to putz around. One of the things I really like about the original Runescape was the sense of danger - even lowly lvl 2 goblins were something you could only take a couple at a time when you're starting out and even though they hit for 1 damage, you only start with 10 health so things could go south very suddenly.

In new Runescape I noticed immediately that these same goblins were hitting for *two* or even *three* health so I got excited like this is the REAL poo poo, this is gonna take 100% of my power to survive but lo and behold I actually start with 1000 goddamn hit points and regenerate them faster than they can damage me even with nothing but my underwear and a bronze dagger equipped.

So I turned that poo poo off. All of the fun of the starting area is gone when I'm in literally no danger and there are no stakes.

What really chafes my nuts is that in old runescape there were like 3 options for attacking which amounted to slashing, stabbing or blocking. Now there's a million activated abilities with dumb loving names like REDEMPTION or EPIC BLOW and none of them matter because combat is braindead and I'm not playing hours of that to find enemies that are an actual challenge. I'm so loving tired of games that do this, and modern MMOs are definitely the biggest offenders. Looking at you, WoW.
