that's the way it works on the west wing though

you give a stirring speech where you dunk on your opponents while reminding everyone that America

then you win at whatever it was you were doing

Bernie can't even manage that?????

on the surface it looks good but the big factor w/be if medicaid premiums were subsidized to the same extent as they are for private insurers.

like, $300/month (no subsidies) w/no out-of-pockets or copays would be great for someone earning $50k/year but subsidized private insurance is a lot less for crappy plans if you're a near-poor (and old) like myself.

but pritzker funded correct the record to the tune of something like a half-mil so I don't trust the fucker and will deffo vote for someone else in the primary, prolly pawar.

eta: cool, it looks like there'd be subsidies applied: "Participants who qualify for ACA tax credits could use those to help pay for their premiums."

And Trump just blew this up , ah well. Illinois is hosed.

If I were a Democratic House member (assuming I weren't just screaming for eternity at the hell I had found myself in), I'd have voted for the Puerto Rico loan too. Not because I think we actually should be loaning money to a U.S. territory for disaster relief, because gently caress that, and not because of "optics" (for all that I wouldn't particularly want to spend the next twenty years explaining why I had "voted against aid to Puerto Rico"), but because it's the only way to get them any help at all right now.

Of course the next day I'd be out in public demanding to know why the most powerful economic force the world has ever known (I don't care if it's true, I'm a politician in this hypothetical reality) isn't throwing every single resource we have in taking care of our suffering brothers and sisters in Puerto Rico, in Texas, in Florida, and oh yeah how's the drinking water in Flint Michigan these days, and and and.

But I suppose every elected official aside from Bernie (and even he ain't banging the drum quite as loudly as I'd like) knows something I don't which is why none of them are doing that.

quote:

Yeah, well, unfortunately, a year later, it’s more than obvious what this #resistance “movement” amounts to. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve asked, “Are you excited so many people are talking about universal healthcare?” Response: “Um, my husband and I think it’ll raise our taxes.” Or I’ll ask, “How do you feel about the fifteen dollars an hour fight?” Response: “Yeah, but that’s not really doable and my husband and I think it’s not fair to business owners,” or some other bullshit excuse.

You see the problem I’m having with the faux-resistance? See *why* it needs to be called the gently caress out? These are the same women that prior to Trump NEVER, and I mean NEVER, talked about politics (at least to me). These are women that live comfortable lives and all’s good as long as their kids are getting good grades in school, their husbands pay five minutes of attention to them, they can get their nails done and go to Garden State Plaza mall.

Sure, they hate Trump. Yes, some have called Republican senators begging them to stop the latest version of TrumpCare, but as long as life for them continues on comfortably, they really aren’t engaged. Not like you might think.

Now, you may be saying, um, Mary, YOU live in the same area, YOUR husband is a senior analyst, aren’t you talking about YOURSELF? drat right. I DO fit the profile. But I didn’t always. I lived in NYC for decades and struggled for years as I worked my way through the music industry. I also come from an immigrant background. My dad is from Sicily, right outside of Palermo. My grandparents lived with us off and on when I was a young kid.

So maybe all of that’s *why* I can see these fake-rear end “resistance” moms for what they are. Maybe that’s *why* I see right through their bullshit.

Good read in the OP's article.

that's fair, but such an action on puerto rico needs to be taken in a larger context

the PROMESA bill which gives undemocratic control of the fiscal policy of puerto rico to a tiny republican-controlled commission passed the house with 158 democratic ayes and 24 noes in 2016 under the obama administration. The houses republicans voted in favor for it with 139 ayes and 103 noes:
https://www.congress.gov/bill/114th-congress/house-bill/5278/all-actions?overview=closed&q=%7B%22roll-call-vote%22%3A%22all%22%7D
http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2016/roll288.xml

the larger context is that the bill is likely an attempt to ensure that creditors (i.e. wall street) get their money from puerto rico even if it completely fucks over the island

I don't think you should give democrats in the house much credit in regards to progressive policy for puerto rico

This bill also puts speculating hedge funds above pensioners, including language to ensure that in any restructuring deal puts the people who worked their entire lives to help the island at the back of the line behind Wall Street. I’ll remind my colleagues that each and every Puerto Rican is an American citizen, many of whom have fought and died for our country in every war over the past century. They deserve the same rights and respect as citizens in New Jersey, Wisconsin, Utah or any other state in the nation.

Finally, the proposed legislation senselessly cuts minimum wage rules and new overtime protections that would apply to workers in Puerto Rico. At a time when cities and States across this nation are moving towards increasing the minimum wage, I cannot fathom why anyone would support decreasing it for Puerto Rico.

So did Ted Cruz and Rand Paul vote against it because they didn't want to gently caress Puerto Rico with more debt and Wall St handouts harder or because they think even a loan is too much and PR should be bootstrapping their way up without our help.
