If I were a Democratic House member (assuming I weren't just screaming for eternity at the hell I had found myself in), I'd have voted for the Puerto Rico loan too. Not because I think we actually should be loaning money to a U.S. territory for disaster relief, because gently caress that, and not because of "optics" (for all that I wouldn't particularly want to spend the next twenty years explaining why I had "voted against aid to Puerto Rico"), but because it's the only way to get them any help at all right now. Of course the next day I'd be out in public demanding to know why the most powerful economic force the world has ever known (I don't care if it's true, I'm a politician in this hypothetical reality) isn't throwing every single resource we have in taking care of our suffering brothers and sisters in Puerto Rico, in Texas, in Florida, and oh yeah how's the drinking water in Flint Michigan these days, and and and. But I suppose every elected official aside from Bernie (and even he ain't banging the drum quite as loudly as I'd like) knows something I don't which is why none of them are doing that.

quote:Yeah, well, unfortunately, a year later, it’s more than obvious what this #resistance “movement” amounts to. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve asked, “Are you excited so many people are talking about universal healthcare?” Response: “Um, my husband and I think it’ll raise our taxes.” Or I’ll ask, “How do you feel about the fifteen dollars an hour fight?” Response: “Yeah, but that’s not really doable and my husband and I think it’s not fair to business owners,” or some other bullshit excuse. Good read in the OP's article.

#Resistance people would be just fine with all of Trump's policies coming out of, say, Rubio, or even Pence It's 100% decorum hand-wringing and concern-trolling from upper-middle-class boomers

The houses republicans voted in favor for it with 139 ayes and 103 noes: https://www.congress.gov/bill/114th-congress/house-bill/5278/all-actions?overview=closed&q=%7B%22roll-call-vote%22%3A%22all%22%7D http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2016/roll288.xml the larger context is that the bill is likely an attempt to ensure that creditors (i.e. wall street) get their money from puerto rico even if it completely fucks over the island I don't think you should give democrats in the house much credit in regards to progressive policy for puerto rico

also lol i didnt see this before https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2016/6/29/1543663/-Thank-the-14-Senate-Democrats-Who-Stood-Up-Against-the-Neocolonial-PROMESA-Bill quote:This bill also puts speculating hedge funds above pensioners, including language to ensure that in any restructuring deal puts the people who worked their entire lives to help the island at the back of the line behind Wall Street. I’ll remind my colleagues that each and every Puerto Rican is an American citizen, many of whom have fought and died for our country in every war over the past century. They deserve the same rights and respect as citizens in New Jersey, Wisconsin, Utah or any other state in the nation.

So did Ted Cruz and Rand Paul vote against it because they didn't want to gently caress Puerto Rico with more debt and Wall St handouts harder or because they think even a loan is too much and PR should be bootstrapping their way up without our help. *he asked already knowing the answer
