Enjoying Super Hydorah a lot. Had it on my list forever but never really got around to it. Also a reminder that Steredenn is really good. Can't remember if I've ever seen it mentioned here. Pixelart shooter with randomised levels/encounters/drops. Some fun alternative ships to unlock. It's available on all platforms. https://steredenn.pixelnest.io teethgrinder fucked around with this message at 16:24 on Mar 23, 2024 |

Minotaurus Rex posted:I’ve played Crimson Clover and that Mush-something bug one but I kinda prefer more old school style shmups. Mushihimesama (at least, the first one), on Original Mode, is an old-school-style shmup. That mode was intentionally designed to be a throwback to older Toaplan games. Fewer, faster bullets. No complex scoring system. Just dodge, shoot, bomb, survive.

Can a Japanese Understander explain why it's never written out as "Mushihime-sama?" I've only ever seen it with a hyphen once (in the OPL Manager game database), but I was suddenly able to parse it in a way I'd never been able to when it's just a long, long word.

I should probably play it again! Those Cave ones are just a little too expensive for me on Steam off-sale

There's nothing about the Japanese that calls for it not to be hyphenated like honorifics usually are in translated media that retains them. It probably just came down to a weird call the first person to type in the English title made.

The Parodius games are pretty decent, as well (although better on PS1/Saturn). Super EDF Flying Hero - Bugyuru no Daibouken Aero Fighters is alright. Super Aleste/Space Megaforce, of course I really want to like Axelay, but I hate the mode-7 perspective gimmick on the vert stages. Haven't played but heard good things about : R-Type III Cotton 100% Pop 'n Twinbee Macross Scrambled Valkyrie Stay away from: Imperium Raiden Trad D-Force Thunder Spirits

I've done a lot of Under Defeat since the fan translation for Dreamcast came out, I dig the vibe of bright orange shots and oily, smoky wreckage as a break from the pastel origami Trapper Keeper geometries of bullet hells. Cool that more people will get a chance to see it, just as long as they don't think too much about which side they're playing as in this WWII expy...

Yeah we got Mamorokun Boosted coming too. Just a few more 360 titles (SDOJ/Futari/Bangai-O) and I can retire the console for good.

I saw on YT yesterday that exaArcadia announced HD FixEight and Air Gallet (!). Not that any of us will ever get to play those, but that's pretty neat, especially the latter. The former will have 4P simultaneous.

A game I'd been following for a while, Astrolancer, just came out. It's inspired pretty heavily by semi-obscure NES game The Guardian Legend. If you're familiar with that, that means that you go back and forth between top down grounded sections and vertically scrolling shmup sections. Kind of like how you go back and forth between topdown and platformer sections in Blaster Master. Unlike The Guardian Legend, it's not an open Metroidvania but instead it's stage based, with some light exploration during the topdown bits. Which I wasn't sure of at first but I like the pacing of the game overall.

Looks cool (I've always loved TGL), butLazyMaybe posted:Unlike The Guardian Legend, it's not an open Metroidvania but instead it's stage based, with some light exploration during the topdown bits. This doesn't appeal to me. Nor the use of pastel colors. Nor it lacking achievements. I think I'll skip it.

Rolling Gunner is on sale in the US for the first time in several years, for 8 bucks. Created by Daisuke Koizumi of Cave (Akai Katana, SDOJ) and M2. He was a programmer on M2's god tier Sega Ages Virtua Racer port. Be sure to snag the DLC that gives you twin stick control over the titular Gunner, and adds a bullet canceling mechanic https://www.dekudeals.com/items/rolling-gunner I picked it up and it strikes me as a Cave take on Dariusburst, with way more bullets. Hell of a game

Hey everyone I’m not much of a “shmup head” but of the ones I’ve played I like the ones with a lot of weapons and upgrades and stuff. I don’t as much like the ones where your capabilities are static throughout the game. Can anyone recommend games like that. Thanks, farewell.

Seconding Drainus for being a really cool shmup in that style. Maybe also Ginga Force, which has a weapon customization system.

If you don't mind the whimsical, the Parodius games have plenty of ships and upgrades too.

Check out The Void Rains Upon Her Heart and Operation Steel for a more roguelite style. The former has a particularly loving fanbase

Mode 7 posted:Maybe also Ginga Force, which has a weapon customization system. I've been mostly enjoying the time I've spent with Ginga Force so far, but man I wish there was a way you could move the dialogue to the lower center of the screen. It's not just flavor text, you do get some level-specific instruction that way... but I'm trying to play a SHMUP ovah heah! If I look away I get blowed up! Will just have to get in the habit of pausing every time someone starts talking.
