You're actually right about Gucci for the most part (although compared to a lot of the new soundcloud dudes he's basically SLR-style Lupe) but don't know why you really comparing him with three 6, who were never really known for trap stuff. The Memphis sound from Mystic Stylez era is basically entirely different (and the more crunk stuff from their later stuff is to fwiw). That said I don't think he's listened to for his pure lyrical prowess, and even though I think he's average at best rapping he's had some solid songs (although nowhere near as many as his fans would have you believe). Also also for the old three 6 stuff a lot of that sound is intentional as it's supposed to be mimicking horror movies and whatnot. Unlike a lot of what gets labeled horrorcore which has some surface similarities, most of the horror tropes are meant to be a commentary on street life vs. the more explicit horror-for-horror sake of dudes like Necro or w/e.

A lot of guys point to three 6 as a main influence in trap, I guess because of Lord finesse flow.

I also have been listening to some Florida artists like Spaceghostpurpp, Raider Klan and Denzel Curry and people said to check out three 6 for one of their main influences.

But I'll give it a listen with what you said in mind. Horror style commentary on the streets sounds cool actually.

You are correct.

The Memphis rap sound is known for its darkness, heavy bass, and fast flows. It was Memphis and Miami that laid out the blueprint for Crunk. Infamous was the first one to feature true tongue twisting outside of FF/Project Blowed/CVE.

Also from a production standpoint dj paul and juicy j (from 3 6), as well as lil John pioneered the crunk sound which was a precursor to trap. What young people now call underground rap like suicideboys and bones is heavily inspired by early 3 6.

All those dudes are heavily influenced by three 6 (especially the early stuff). Also Lil Ugly Mane who was mentioned earlier (and who imo did the best version of that style).

All that said, you may just not like that style (or at least the early stuff) and honestly that's fine. Def give it another listen, and appreciate all the influence that they had but may just not be your thing. like Nos (who was my favorite rap writer before he basically quit writing) really geeks out over a bunch of early rap stuff and goes into how it was influential and stuff and like I find a ton of that basically unlistenable.

While we're on the topic of trap influences, what started the whole ad-lib craze? Obviously Migos made it really popular but it seems like the ad-libs aren't as present in the early trap influences that I hear about. It seems pretty critical as it adds another rhythmic layer to otherwise basic beats, in my opinion.

I'm more thinking Migos or maybe Young Thug distinctive ad-libs not so much the Travis Scott repeated "yeah" sample ad-libs which are less cool. Gucci's are also pretty repetitive to the point where I think he might just reuse samples of him saying his own name from other songs.

I'm surprised I like the sound of it because at first I only listened to Migos ironically due to some of the idiotic sounding ad-libs like momma! and cookie! but now I realized it actually adds another rhythmic layer to the song and makes it way more interesting. Also I really dislike hype men oriented live performances with guys who just repeat lines or say yeah, which is kind of along the same lines as ad-libs but not quite. Somehow modern trap has perfected it to the point where the ad-libs are just part of the beat instead of being a guy finishing your line for you because you're out of breath.

One more thing - why is "punching in" i.e. recording one line at a time, considered an impressive thing? Lil Wayne being the most obvious example but Young Thug records this way too. Aside from not writing down the lyrics I'm not seeing what's impressive about only being able to perform a line at a time. It tends to result in very poor live performances. As a jazz musician we tend to do things in one take, having to do 500 takes to record a verse properly doesn't show skill in my opinion.

The Young Jeezy, Gucci era really brought in adlibs. I can't tell you who started what but everybody did it in the early 2000's.

Thanks man. I really only listened to old school hip hop until the last year so that makes sense I missed that era.

Also, just tried giving mystic styles a second listen and the lyrics and flows are really good. I just find the beats haven't aged that well but I guess a lot of hip hop is like that.Theyre still good just a little basic. Lyrics are way above modern trap though haha. Interesting to hear about stuff besides money, hoes and jewelery. There's also a bit more variety than modern stuff in general.

I think a lot of people mistake rapping slowly for rapping poorly, Gucci being a good case in point. His newer output doesn't come close to his older stuff but that comparison ignores just how good his older work was. He's always had fantastic internal rhyme schemes, and has this ability to add syllables to where they absolutely should not fit. His earlier stuff can be dismissed as basic trap but what separates him is that he can in three or four lines deliver a statement that most need an entire track to say. Truth from Trap God is a great example--"I know it's hard for you to sleep knowing you killed your homeboy/You left his son to be a bastard, won't even raise your own boy".

The Burrprint 3D was mentioned earlier and is probably his best tape, I'm particularly fond of Excuse Me but the whole thing is great. Classic trap sure, but it outclasses almost every single tape I can think of. No one else can deliver ".45 in the club, I could kill a hippopotamus," and have it come across as a legit statement.

"My necklace full of diamonds, his piece gave him a rash/He bought it from the Texaco cos' he done saved his cash/Tryna be like Gucci Mane but he don't have the swag/Needs to take his jewelry off and throw it in the trash."

Post-jail Gucci is pretty boring compared to his old output. Diamonds from Guccimerica is the song I bring up every time I want to illustrate Gucci’s talents. Lots of slant and sight rhymes.

And it just goes. So much faster and energetic than his recent output.

Nickelodeon is just a demonstration of Gucci’s finesse.

If you were referring to my posts, read again. I love trap and am interested in where the influences come from. I literally only criticized a single artist (Gucci) for being overrated. The rest is all about trap, a genre that I personally love. I figured some discussion would be interesting instead of just pasting YouTube links?

My bad if you meant someone else.

I mean, I don’t think “poor lyrical content” is an invalid critique of modern popular trap ala migos or whatever. Most people itt are probably sick of hearing about Pateks at this point I’d imagine.

You could argue that’s not really the point of the music and you’d be right but at this point with the over saturation it does get a bit tiresome and I’m a person that listens to that stuff a lot
