Cthulhu Wars

Sandy Petersen has developed a board game along the lines of Risk, but set in a world where the Great Old Ones from H.P. Lovecraft's Mythos have run amok and are vying against each other for domination of the earth. I got to play a few rounds of it back in March while it was still in the test phase with Sandy, and it's definitely an amazing game for those interested in strategy heavy, competitive board games. One of the biggest draws, though, are the nearly 140 miniatures that will be part of the base game and subsequent expansions. Kickstarter will end on July 7th for anybody interested!

This is amazing. And I thought that Talisman required a lot of figures to play... Glad to see they are destroying all the stretch goals.

Looks like he was able to make some headway on reducing the cost on international shipping, and will continue to work on lowering that specific cost.

Yeah, that's cool. I've decided to back it; the game does look like it'll be great.

Ancient Terrible Things (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/pleasantcompanygames/ancient-terrible-things) looks like it might be fun too ... the video doesn't give a huge amount of detail about the gameplay, but they've put a copy of the rules up. I'm not really sure what to compare it to; it doesn't really remind me of anything else I've played.

quote:

A pulp horror dice game for 2-4 players. Join a doomed expedition in their ascent up a jungle river, and their descent into madness.

Ancient Terrible Things is a pulp horror press-your-luck and risk management dice and board game for 2 to 4 players, age 14 and up, and takes 60 minutes to play. In Ancient Terrible Things, you play the role of an intrepid adventurer, exploring a dark jungle river. Each turn you must travel to a Fateful Location, face an Ominous Encounter and attempt to unlock its Ancient Secrets.

If you succeed (using a combination of dice, tokens and cards), you add the Ancient Secrets to your score. If you fail, you unleash a Terrible Thing, which counts against your Secrets at the end of the game. The object of the game is to be the player with the most Ancient Secrets when the game ends at the Unspeakable Event.

This game looks intriguing. Definitely a dice heavy game, though... and dice don't ever seem to like me much. It looks like it's going to meet its goal, and it will definitely go on the ol' wishlist when it does! Thanks for showing me this one.

How much worse is indiegogo? Should I hire someone in the US to run the KS?

Thanks.

If your pitch and your PR campaign aren't amazing then there's a pretty big risk that your project will get lost amongst the noise at Indiegogo. Of course, if your pitch and your campaign aren't amazing it might not do well at Kickstarter either but it'll still stand a better chance. In either case the PR work you do outside of KS/IGG will make or break the project unless it goes viral on its own and there's never any guarantee of that.

There's a few websites out there with step by step instructions on setting up a Kickstarter project from Australia and it sounds like a fairly arduous process but if you're serious about setting up this business then it'd probably be worth it. It'll be a lot easier if you've got a friend in the US who can become your 'employee' and register the LLC and the bank accounts and everything for you, or you could even take a trip over there and do it yourself.

Because it's FarSight, king of delays and buggy broken releases. Check out the Pinball thread in Games sometime. That's not to say they're totally incompetent or anything like that; they're still the top of their game, but their releases are usually pretty rocky.

In late June they posted this on their Facebook page (my emphasis):

quote:

PC/Steam: Since our Steam Greenlight several months ago, we’ve been hard at work creating a Steam version of the Pinball Arcade. We’re happy to announce that the first Beta build of the Steam platform was released to internal test this week! We will be conducting a closed public Beta of the Steam version in July- if you are one of our Kickstarter backers entitled to Beta access on the PC platform, watch your email for information on how to get access! We are targeting an August release for the Pinball Arcade on Steam with all of the current table packs available.

How about some really lightweight shoes?

That actually sounds like a really intelligent idea.

Lightweight, waterproof, durable shoes? The only thing that could make it better is if they offered velcro (or maybe even Duotec) instead of laces for true laziness.

And sold them for around $10-12 at Walmart. Cheap and high tech? Who wouldn't want that?

VVVV - It definitely falls in the realm of dubiously necessary items, but it would be cool to have a large T-Rex head near the front door of my house. "What the gently caress is that?!?!"

I just discovered there is already another company making these.

I discovered it because, well, I was interested in the idea and felt like doing a little research. The general idea is pretty cool. Whoever comes up with the best implementation will get my money. The Kickstarter version already reached its funding goal, and I'm getting the feeling that I'll have to wait a while before I can throw money at them to actually get a pair of shoes.

I was surfing the Newly Launched a few days ago to look for contributions to the Worst Kickstarters thread, and actually found something cool:

Sun Never Sets, a short film about a British enclave in near-future Shanghai. The plot isn't very well defined at this point, but the idea of the short is to explore post-colonial themes, using the main character's idealization of the British Empire and refusal to accept its decline as a metaphor for the possible decline of Western culture in general, as developing economies rise to prominence and the west loses its place of privilege.

It doesn't appear to be doomsaying; it neither mourns or delights in the decline of the West, because it's not really what it's about, it's about the rise of the rest of the world, and whether we'll be able to deal with no longer being the best at everything, on a personal, psychological level. It looks like it will deal with themes that are timely, relevant, and mostly unaddressed by other works.
