Yeah the feature that requires a human to be prepared to drive at any time is going to take the jobs of human drivers. People dunk on this because Tesla is the forefront of the Tech 2.0 bubble, autopilot is a garbage feature that doesn't even use LIDAR and kills people, and Musk is a terrible person. If any company achieves level 4 or 5 cars that threaten jobs, it's not going to be Tesla under leadership of Spacebro Jesus.

We are very sorry for the family's loss.

According to the family, Mr. Huang was well aware that Autopilot was not perfect and, specifically, he told them it was not reliable in that exact location, yet he nonetheless engaged Autopilot at that location. The crash happened on a clear day with several hundred feet of visibility ahead, which means that the only way for this accident to have occurred is if Mr. Huang was not paying attention to the road, despite the car providing multiple warnings to do so.

The fundamental premise of both moral and legal liability is a broken promise, and there was none here. Tesla is extremely clear that Autopilot requires the driver to be alert and have hands on the wheel. This reminder is made every single time Autopilot is engaged. If the system detects that hands are not on, it provides visual and auditory alerts. This happened several times on Mr. Huang's drive that day.

We empathize with Mr. Huang's family, who are understandably facing loss and grief, but the false impression that Autopilot is unsafe will cause harm to others on the road. NHTSA found that even the early version of Tesla Autopilot resulted in 40% fewer crashes and it has improved substantially since then. The reason that other families are not on TV is because their loved ones are still alive.

Idiot consumers expect "Autopilot" to "automatically pilot" their car. Now, if you read the fine print,

he's a narcissistic venture capitalist, his companies are super successful in that context

also Tesla's technology is mostly behind what real automakers have, the reason nobody else is building vehicles that compete with Teslas is because there's no money in it yet

self driving cars are a hilarious fantasy

not that they'll never exist, they just will never exist in the exciting ways people imagine them

like, there are still gonna be 100s of millions of people-driven cars all over the drat place, completely negating any sort of networked efficiency

all it will do is undercut commercial truckers and help idiots fall asleep on highways

not to mention the legitimate ethical quandaries it brings up regarding accident safety

the head of mercedes has already been heard on record to say "they'll protect the one thing they can control, the driver (sorry person in the way)." he walked it back later but why would we believe someone caught exposing a damning truth?

car companies already lie about petty bullshit like emissions. first VW, now didn't bmw just get caught? why wouldn't they lie about accident safety?

there's a mildly interesting radio lab on the subject. its not great, but at least broaches the interesting topic

i hope networked self-driving cars come to pass because i think it's going to be loving hilarious when cheap cars for poor people automatically yield to rich person luxury cars

the utopian tech-nerd fantasy is that self-driving car manufacturers would prioritize the overall efficiency of the traffic system, but there would absolutely be a built-in way to prioritize certain vehicles over others, and if you actually think about it then it's pretty obvious that someone's gonna find a way to sell that to people as an add-on

No! See, possessions aren't real so when the bank evicts you just keep living there because nothing matters.
