There's something about the weight of the strokes and the severity of the gradient on the faces that look incredibly amateurish to me.

I have zero problem with them emulating iOS because so does Twitter and EmojiOne and Windows (Phone?) and literally everyone, and there needs to be some amount of consistency to avoid awkwardness.

I literally can't pick out the frown emoji on the new ones. I've never looked it up in emojipedia to see what it looks like but just looking at the list of emoji on my phone, i can't tell which it's supposed to be.

I wouldn't have even guessed it'd have been possible to make :( unindentifiable.

If you go to Hangouts and use the emoji button above the keyboard does that one show up? I just looked and I don't have that one. I also use Swype so their emoji picker is completely different.

Edit: I just went through the Swype picker and it's not in there either.

Edit 2: I just had someone send me a frowny face and the one that comes up has a red forehead and eyebrows. I would have called it "ashamed".

Edit 3: My Pixel has this:

I'm not sure what you mean, sorry. My emoji picker is in the same place in Hangouts, I'm using gboard.

I meant the emoji picker is different based on whether you use the one on the keyboard or in the app. Either way I edited again and my frown is not your frown and mine is the one reflected in emojipedia so you're the weird one.

Or maybe Canadian faces are just easier to read?

What emoji picker in the Hangouts app?? It's the exact same Gboard section for me, I genuinely am not sure what you mean

Well if I wasn't at work right now I'd take screenshots but with a different keyboard enabled the emoji button above the keyboard opens something completely different from the one within it, with the emoji in a completely different order and a different format with one being paginated and the other scrolling vertically by section. Neither look anything like the Gboard picker. One is either the system picker or Hangouts picker and the other comes from Swype. The Swype one also lacks new emoji until they update it which is usually about six months after the emoji are added or longer. Some features, like skin tone picking, isn't even possible in the Swype picker.

Even in Gboard I don't have the frown, keyboards don't have anything to do with what's on the phone itself. My Pixel just doesn't have that emoji which I'll admit would have been easy to identify had it existed for me but it doesn't so now I can never be sad again.

Now that I'm home I decided to look more into it because yes, it is insane. It turns out I'm not missing it, but it won't display in Hangouts if Swype is the selected keyboard.

If I go to Hangouts and make Gboard my keyboard, two things happen: The button to select the stock Google emoji picker disappears from the bar above the keyboard and the frown emoji will appear in the picker. In CLAM DOWN's image pasted below, you see the bar above the keyboard and on that if you have Swype selected, there is an emoji button to the left of the insert picture button:

If I select Swype as my keyboard the frown is not in Swype's emoji picker and it's ALSO not in Gboard's emoji picker which can be invoked by pushing that now-present button. Check the screenshot below where I've scrolled to the location in the picker where it should be and placed a question mark:

The fact that the placement is seven spots farther back in the picker would indicate that there are a further seven emoji that are also absent. You can see the emoji picker button in the Hangouts bar in this image as well.

I was ready to call you wrong and come in here and post it using Swype but you're right 😕

also, 🐨 is my first emoji suggestion after typing "frown".

I still won't switch to Gboard until they add swiping shortcuts for select all, cut, copy and paste like Swype has. also the feature where you can go back and tap a word earlier in the sentence and get suggestions based on what you swiped instead of whatever the gently caress Gboard tries to suggest (oh and you only get three choices instead of the five that swype has).

You're right about the suggestions in Gboard but for the me the biggest reason I went back to Swype was the inconsistency. It would work fine for months then it just wouldn't, then it would, then it wouldn't... over and over. It seemed like it changed constantly (Google? Changing things constantly for no reason?) and I just couldn't ever get consistent results.

And while I appreciate the Swype shortcuts you mentioned for me the best is the number pad. I'd have never believed I entered that many numbers until I didn't have it.

Actually, I guess I wasn't quite accurate...I do get the appeal and usefulness as I've used emoticons online since the early 90s.

I just don't get the amount of care that people seem to have about how they look.

That's on me being old I'm sure, nothing about the people who care.

They're like SA emotes for kids. I just wish they were better, because I always want SA emotes on other platforms. But being able to convey an emotion simply and concisely is very useful and you should not need to be a young hip kid to understand that.

Emojis: I think it's bad that Google took something that was theirs - their unique take on a thing - and made it different simply because although it worked fine the way it was, they're absolutely terrified of their competition and didn't trust their own product.
