I'm looking for music that's from the 50s/60s (or sounds like it is) that has a slow tempo with sparse arrangements--usually just a singer and a bass and maybe a guitar and drums and/or finger snaps--as well as soul/blues tinged and mostly showcase the vocals.

Since I am doing a horrible job trying to describe it, I want music like this:
Elvis Presley - Fever
Nancy Sinatra - Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)
Serge Gainsbourg - Le Claqeur de Doigts
She & Him - I Put a Spell On You

I know a few of these are covers but pretty much any version of the songs fits what I'm looking for. Thanks.

Georges Brassens' work is essentially this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4j1RmzFFC4

Jacques Brel's first album fits too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yynd8iAsdDk&ob=av2n

Silvio Rodriguez's Al final de este viaje and Dias y flores (Cuba), Victor Jara's El derecho de vivir en paz (Chile), Joan Manuel Serrat's Mediterraneo (Catalonia), Paco Ibáñez's 1 (Spain), Carlos Mejía Godoy y Los de Palacagüina's El son nuestro de cada día (Nicaragua), Ali Primera's La Patria es el Hombre (Venezuela), Daniel Viglietti's Canciones chuecas (Uruguay); should give you a pretty strong background.

For reasons of education and history you should probably give Inti-Illimani and Violeta Parra both a listen too, although I think they're subpar compared to what I listed.

First, listen to all of The Cold Vein, that album is amazing. El-P/Company Flow is good if you like that, and maybe it's too obvious, but I can't believe nobody has mentioned A Tribe Called Quest. Whoever said Jurassic 5 is right - Quality Control is a fantastic album- and while they never did anything else worthwhile, Foreign Legion's Kidnapper Van has some ridiculously good flows on it.

I'll avoid getting uppity and claiming "well, you just described all hip hop," but since you clearly aren't familiar with most beyond what's on the radio and sound like you're looking for more "positive vibe" stuff, you should dig into the early nineties native tongues movement. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Native_Tongues

This is a stereotypical answer, but the new Kanye West is chock full of samples used very well. but it takes more of a Björk-ish pop direction and the lyrics may seem a bit shallow. A lot of people who don't like mainstream rap really got turned on by it and you should too.

er, the old Kanye West did the same thing. and he was much more lyrical back then, to boot.

I need something new to listen to. I like a fairly big assortment of music but I'm way too quick to dismiss anything that I don't like at first. To be honest I'm mostly just looking to fill up my 64GB iPhone with music so I can justify to myself the price I paid for it.

Favourite bands/artists in no order at the moment:
Amy Winehouse
The Band
Rolling Stones
Beck
Tegan & Sara
Bob Dylan
Clapton/Derek & The Dominoes/Cream
Hendrix
Kanye West / Jay-Z
Mumford & Sons
The White Stripes

Stuff I also listen to sometimes lately:
Feist
Moby
Bruce Springsteen
The Clash
Sex Pistols
Dire Straits
The Doors
Jeff Buckley
Radiohead
Muse
Motorhead
Van Morrison

Stuff I don't like:
- Country, though I do like Johnny Cash and Steve Earle's earlier country and rock so I'm not entirely opposed to it.
- Dubsteb of any kind. Dance music isn't really my thing either. I can't stand LMFAO/Black Eyed Peas or anything of the sort but my likes probably spell that out.

Appreciate any suggestions. Most of my stuff is fairly mainstream and I've not been open minded at all but trying to change that to open up to new music.

Personally I don't consider Violeta Parra to be "subpar" in any way, but stylistically she's slightly distant from what's generally regarded as Nueva Canción since her work falls closer to traditional folk. It's kind of the opposite of what happens with Joan Manuel Serrat - there's this general notion that Nueva Canción hasto be necessarily linked to Latin American folk music, and Serrat both having a more developed personal style and being Catalonian sometimes make people consider he doesn't share enough cultural background in common with the bulk of the authors of the genre. Still, both should be considered in a first approach to the Nueva Canción - Parra, since she practically invented the genre, and Serrat, because in terms of style and message you can still notice the relation, and well, he's a pretty great lyricist in his own right and remains one of the most influential living songwriters in the Spanish-speaking world (yeah I know he's catalonian, whatever).

Oh and it is kind of impossible to be introduced to the Nueva Canción without including Mercedes Sosa.

some stuff i think relates to what you mentioned:

- both Iggy Pop and the Buzzcocks fall somewhere between Sex Pistols ("messy") and The Clash ("tidy"). maybe Dead Kennedys as well.
- Portishead and assorted trip hop
- The Smiths and Morrissey's solo work, though if you listen to Jeff Buckley i'm guessing you've already covered some of that.
- Neil Young
- Patti Smith, maybe?

I have Grateful Dead and Kinks CDs purchased but I haven't listened to them yet. I also love Janis and forgot to put that on my list.

I'll definitely download the rest and try listening to GD and the Kinks. I've always heard GD was one of the best rock bands ever but haven't actually listened to them.

To the above poster, I absolutely love Neil Young and am ashamed that I forgot to list him as well. I do like Iggy Pop but haven't listened to him in forever so I'll get to buying some tunes. I'll look into the rest too.

Hey guys! I've been listening to Life in a Glass House by Radiohead a lot recently and was wondering if you guys could point me in a similar direction to whatever it is. In terms of jazzy sort of stuff I know of Coltrane (I do like Giant Steps) and the goon band A Giraffe. That's about it as far as my knowledge goes, but every time I do hear some jazzy thing I go "Ooh, I like that!" and then promptly forget.

So, basically, what's some good jazz, preferably with vocals?

This is a great compilation of New Orleans music. It doesn't look like it's available new anymore, but I'm sure it won't be too tough to track down a used copy. It also doesn't focus singularly on jazz, but neither does the city.
