For reasons of education and history you should probably give Inti-Illimani and Violeta Parra both a listen too, although I think they're subpar compared to what I listed.

El-P/Company Flow is good if you like that, and maybe it's too obvious, but I can't believe nobody has mentioned A Tribe Called Quest. Whoever said Jurassic 5 is right - Quality Control is a fantastic album- and while they never did anything else worthwhile, Foreign Legion's Kidnapper Van has some ridiculously good flows on it.

This might be a rather loose one, but I am looking for a hip-hop/rap song that samples RJD2 - Ghostwriter? There might be several, as it is a frequently sampled song, but I think the song I am looking for is among the popular ones.

I need something new to listen to. I like a fairly big assortment of music but I'm way too quick to dismiss anything that I don't like at first. To be honest I'm mostly just looking to fill up my 64GB iPhone with music so I can justify to myself the price I paid for it. Favourite bands/artists in no order at the moment: Amy Winehouse The Band Rolling Stones Beck Tegan & Sara Bob Dylan Clapton/Derek & The Dominoes/Cream Hendrix Kanye West / Jay-Z Mumford & Sons The White Stripes Stuff I also listen to sometimes lately: Feist Moby Bruce Springsteen The Clash Sex Pistols Dire Straits The Doors Jeff Buckley Radiohead Muse Motorhead Van Morrison Stuff I don't like: - Country, though I do like Johnny Cash and Steve Earle's earlier country and rock so I'm not entirely opposed to it. - Dubsteb of any kind. Dance music isn't really my thing either. I can't stand LMFAO/Black Eyed Peas or anything of the sort but my likes probably spell that out. Appreciate any suggestions. Most of my stuff is fairly mainstream and I've not been open minded at all but trying to change that to open up to new music.

Check out: Jefferson Airplane Grateful Dead Moby Grape The Animals The Kinks Fleet Foxes Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros Dr. Dog Janis Joplin You'll have to let me know if you enjoy any of them!

Personally I don't consider Violeta Parra to be "subpar" in any way, but stylistically she's slightly distant from what's generally regarded as Nueva Canción since her work falls closer to traditional folk. It's kind of the opposite of what happens with Joan Manuel Serrat - there's this general notion that Nueva Canción hasto be necessarily linked to Latin American folk music, and Serrat both having a more developed personal style and being Catalonian sometimes make people consider he doesn't share enough cultural background in common with the bulk of the authors of the genre. Still, both should be considered in a first approach to the Nueva Canción - Parra, since she practically invented the genre, and Serrat, because in terms of style and message you can still notice the relation, and well, he's a pretty great lyricist in his own right and remains one of the most influential living songwriters in the Spanish-speaking world (yeah I know he's catalonian, whatever). Oh and it is kind of impossible to be introduced to the Nueva Canción without including Mercedes Sosa. SexyBlindfold fucked around with this message at 20:17 on Oct 21, 2011 |

I'll definitely download the rest and try listening to GD and the Kinks. I've always heard GD was one of the best rock bands ever but haven't actually listened to them. To the above poster, I absolutely love Neil Young and am ashamed that I forgot to list him as well. I do like Iggy Pop but haven't listened to him in forever so I'll get to buying some tunes. Anyone recommend some music in the vein of Aphex Twin? Experimental electronic, ambient, D&B, atmospheric stuff, minimalist, whatever. Not necessarily only electronic music. I enjoy the acoustic pieces on Drukqs. And I just found this album which I'm really digging: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6Gnc-ffJoM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyDvGBJ1v5I

Hey guys! I've been listening to Life in a Glass House by Radiohead a lot recently and was wondering if you guys could point me in a similar direction to whatever it is. In terms of jazzy sort of stuff I know of Coltrane (I do like Giant Steps) and the goon band A Giraffe. That's about it as far as my knowledge goes, but every time I do hear some jazzy thing I go "Ooh, I like that!" and then promptly forget. So, basically, what's some good jazz, preferably with vocals?

This is a great compilation of New Orleans music. It doesn't look like it's available new anymore, but I'm sure it won't be too tough to track down a used copy. It also doesn't focus singularly on jazz, but neither does the city.

I recently renewed my love for bluegrass, dixieland, traditional mountain and Southern songs. I'm talking about songs like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZUNQvorokg&feature=related Actually pretty much anything from the O Brother Where Art Thou? soundtrack. Thing is I don't know anything about this music, if what I listed above is even correct in describing it, and I don't know what I'm searching for when I try to look up similar music. Can I get some suggestions on who/what to be searching for?

Can anyone recommend me cheesy 80s metal with masturbatory solos and singers who sing in really heavily accented, generally not very comprehensible English? Loudness (pre-Soldier of Fortune) and early Helloween (up to Keeper of the Seven Keys 2) are pretty good examples of what I'm looking for.

You might like a lot of the LA weirdo instrumental Hip-Hop stuff from the Low End Theory scene/Stones Throw catalog. Madlib, Flying Lotus, Gaslamp Killer, Daedelus, Peanut Butter Wolf, J Dilla, Nosaj Thing, etc. Maybe also stuff on Hyperdub, Darkstar, James Blake, Africa Hitech. I dunno. Get Hyperdub's 5 box set and figure it out from there, I guess.
