If we're going by that metric nobody gives a poo poo about Danny either besides some Very Online people (why are we still arguing about Danny when we don't have any new info btw)

At an early meeting with my local DSA chapter, they were trying to find a meeting space.

I asked if anyone was a member of a Union, maybe we could use their space.

One of these days I need to track down every Union in my city and say hello, at least so I know who they all are.

Lots of unions are skittish about anything with the word "socialist" in the title. You might do better with UCC and Unitarian churches.

Check if your unions are doing something for labor day imo. In my area a bunch of them get together and throw a big bbq every year

We organized nationwide with the CWA for the AT&T strike a couple months ago but yeah you gotta be careful. The AFLCIO still has a no reds clause on the books from the 50s for example

good places to look for meeting spaces (ranked in order of preference)

1. libraries
2. union halls
3. college campuses (inc. community colleges)
4. other organization meeting locations (NAACP, kiwanis club, etc. they probably don't have buildings but you can probably find what places are hospitable to hosting by finding out where they meet.)
5. concert venues sometimes have real cheap prices during off-hours. maybe y'all can meet at your local place's dark day.
6. churches
try not to:
- meet in a member's house or apt. especially if you don't know how goony their cleaning habits are. This also easily lends itself towards insularity once you establish a steering cmte. stay away from house meetings. (unless you're organizing a caucus or doing small group work w/ ppl you trust. it's bad for gen. meetings though.)
- vary the meeting location or time. this will be hard when you start but it's a lot easier if people know that your chapter meets on the last wednesday of the month at the UCC church rather than fluctuating like a quantum ghost across time and space.

try to:
-have hot bevs and snacks. if you can't afford this as a chapter yet, make getting these things at your meetings one of your first priorities.
-have childcare available. there's one gazillion parents with diabetic or asthmatic etc. kids biting their nails about healthcare and they're a huge audience but they can't come unless you have someone whose job it is to make sure children don't impale themselves. If you don't know how/where to get childcare set up in your state, ask a church or person involved in education. :siren: AND FOR THE LOVE OF GOD RUN A BACKGROUND CHECK ON WHOEVER VOLUNTEERS TO DO CHILDCARE UNLESS THEY ARE CURRENTLY EMPLOYED DOING THIS!!!:siren:
- keep the meeting NO LONGER THAN TWO HOURS. if for whatever reason your meeting must go over 2 hours, schedule a a half-hour break and be drat sure you have snacks.

This is some good poo poo. Do you have any suggestions for OCs that are incapable of meeting in any of the 6 types locations you mentioned? Wilco is a lovely place with no union buildings and conservative churches, and our public libraries are $50/hr for a room. Right now we just invade some random establishment and hope they don't kick us out, and our last meeting was held at a member's house in Leander because it was the only place we could find.

Can you book the library for $100 and just be upfront with everyone attending that it costs money and they should put a couple bucks in the shoebox by the door? That's what we do, due to similar restrictions (and our spaces cost usually two or three times that).

Yeah I have a hard time believing he was being intentionally deceptive. It's really unfortunate how online rumors can snowball like this.

This was the campaign pamphlet Fetonte was passing around during the convention. For many delegates outside the Austin chapter, this was the first (and perhaps only) information we had about him. He's very specific about organizing "furniture workers" and "landline telephone workers" and so on but he vaguely describes his work with sheriffs and prison guards as organizing "state workers". It really does seem like an intentional deception—or at the very least a lapse of judgment unbefitting an NPC leader—which is what I'm actually upset about.

Regardless of your position on the ACAB question we all know it's an important matter worth debating openly and transparently and before the election, not after.

yes this is where a local dues campaign becomes important. but you can only really get that kind of buy-in once you're already doing something for your members. A 'pass the hat' approach is a half-measure, but a useful one. How many people do you have at the meetings? If there's at least 10 I'd say it's feasible to ask for donations. If not, you're within a size where few businesses will actually kick you out for each ordering a single cup of coffee in a denny's or whatever. It's not the best solution but it'll do.

The other option is to to book 1-hour meetings and do prep-calls ahead of each one. Call all the people you've invited and make sure they know about what's going to be discussed at the meeting, have read whatever they're supposed to read, etc. You should be doing this anyway as the chapter grows so find the most reliable 20% of your OC and get them to do this with you. Call the weekend before the meeting, and then 24-48 hours before the meeting. Obviously, you'll need phone numbers for this, so take down phone numbers at all meetings. If you have a laptop you can set up a google sheet as a sign-in thing for people at the meeting and require a phone number. some people will refuse, but emphasize the importance if you can. Read a book on the nuts & bolts of labor organizing and it will help a lot. I like Secrets of a Successful Organizer (http://www.labornotes.org/secrets).

i have heard so much wimpy protesting of really incredibly basic political maneuvers such as "trying to get people to change their minds", "having a phonecall with someone you disagree with", "putting a group of likeminded people together on a slate to ensure you have the power to execute your plans once elected" that i want to scream into my hands until they melt.

maybe he didn't think unionising cops is as much of a capital crime as you do and doesn't consider it a core part of his background

maybe his views aren't what people would associate with 'the cop candidate', maybe he doesn't consider himself 'the cop candidate' - so maybe that's why he isn't advertising him as such and purposefully avoids the negative connotations because they genuinely don't apply to him

all these possibilities.
