Musk probably thinks Twitter content moderators spend most of their time silencing and oppressing real America. I'd guess they overwhelmingly spend their time fighting child pornography, explicit violence, hate speech, fishing/hacking schemes, scams and bots.

The fall of unicorns
The billion-dollar tech unicorn is becoming rare again

quote:

SAN FRANCISCO — The hot social media network BeReal — which is gaining steam with young people as a casual alternative to Instagram — recently raised money, a key milestone on the path of any successful start-up.

It had all the elements of a buzzy start-up, like Snapchat, Clubhouse and Pinterest before it. It was popular with college students and even beat out social media video rival TikTok on Apple’s App Store. But when a report this month confirmed how investors valued the company, it was reportedly worth in the ballpark of $600 million — far short of the “unicorn” status of more than $1 billion many of its predecessors earned in frothier times.

A billion dollars may seem to be a big bet, but unicorn status for years has helped young companies attract employees and media attention, as well as offer founders runway to pursue new ideas and cachet with potential partners. Many now-established start-ups such as Airbnb and Uber that have shaken up long-standing industries depended on deep-pocketed investors to cover losses while they struggled to compete.

But BeReal’s experience is representative of a new reality in Silicon Valley.

Remote work changed their lives. They’re not going back to the office.

As employee layoffs, CEO resignations and belt-tightenings eliminate some of the excessive perks for which tech companies are known, investors here minted only 25 companies worth over $1 billion each in the third quarter of 2022, according to the venture capital research firm CB Insights. A year ago, there were more than five times as many new unicorns.

A mere $600 million for "take a photograph of yourself when prompted". So sad.

He never actually wanted to buy it. Once he realized the courts would force him to do so he gave up trying to get out of it legally. Other efforts like praising Russia in order to draw government security scrutiny, and threats about killing off 75% of the workforce, are also last ditch efforts to try and get the deal killed.

Ah, but you see, the True Value of a Company is a kind of Platonic ideal, existing in relation to the profane physical shell but not dependent upon it. Only when the sublime idea takes root in the mind of a Great Man can it imprint itself upon the mundane universe; as for the employees, their "labor" is supernumerary, useful only inasmuch as it executes the will of the Entrepreneur.

Also dont "where the unicorns at?" articles get written often because stupid richers just want to magically multiple their number?

Smaller layoffs, sure. But 75% will gut the company. It will quickly become a situation where every technical issue causes the whole service to go down for days because everyone who knew how it worked is gone, and everyone who is left is too demoralized to relearn how it works.

Facebook Parent Meta’s Earnings Fall Short as Revenue Decline Accelerates

quote:

Facebook parent Meta Platforms Inc. posted its second revenue decline in a row, as the social-media giant wrestles with a vortex of challenging business conditions that have combined to shave more than half a trillion dollars from its market value so far this year.

The company reported quarterly revenue of $27.7 billion, down more than 4% from a year ago, after posting a 1% decrease last quarter. Meta’s share price fell more than 5% on Wednesday, amid a broad selloff of tech shares, and is now trading at a price last seen in 2017.

Meta shares dropped a further 14% in after-hours trading.

Meta is battling a host of challenges, including the tough macroeconomic climate, growing competition from rival TikTok and the fallout from Apple Inc.’s ad-tracking changes, all of which have taken a toll on its massive advertising business.

At least some of those issues are being felt across Silicon Valley, with Google’s YouTube unit posting a decline in advertising revenue on Tuesday and Snap Inc. delivering disappointing results last week.

But Meta is also undergoing an ambitious and expensive pivot, away from its core social-media products including Facebook and Instagram, and toward a future centered around the so-called metaverse where users can live, work and play in an immersive online experience.

Meta’s Reality Labs unit, which is driving the company’s virtual-reality and metaverse efforts, posted revenue of $285 million for the quarter, a decline of nearly 49% compared with a year ago. The unit had an operating loss of $3.7 billion, and the company said it expects that figure will grow significantly next year.

Horizon Worlds, Meta’s flagship metaverse product for consumers, has fewer than 200,000 monthly active users, far less than the company’s original goal of 500,000 users by the end of this year, according to company documents cited by The Wall Street Journal earlier this month.

Meta had a bad quarter, stock down 17% in afterhours trading at time of posting.

I don't think he'll do 75% of engineering in one bloodbath; he'll keep one or two people in each team to train the infosys or accenture contractors that will de facto be running the place indefinitely.
