Our high school didn't have an official mascot because the year before I got there they decided to get rid of using the confederate flag and hadn't figured out a replacement yet. They started to work with LAPD later to get training that later lead to what we now know as SWAT. One of my professors was constantly talking about his SWAT history (he served in Detroit, though) and he points to this event as 'people waking up.' He was/is super interested in making sure police had everything they could get their hands on. Other professors would counter with this starting over-militarization of the police (but never around this professor).

Honestly, Campus Carry is a tempest in a teapot. Something like fewer than 1% of college students have conceal-carry permits, and probably far fewer than that actually want to deal with carrying on campus. The amount of ire its drawn is overshadowing actually important things that these professors could be lobbying for (like to increase funding).
