this reminds me that there's most of a titan-1 on display near me now (getting the nosecone this month I think?) http://rapidcityjournal.com/news/local/communities/ellsworth/a-titan-laid-to-rest/article_a88bafba-5a88-5a38-9556-e88782578c57.html Been sitting on the base since 1984 apparently, gonna have to check it out later when it's finished.

Mortabis posted:Phanatic's right; you glide at the same ratio no matter what the weight is. Glide ratio is the cotangent of your angle of descent. If you're trying to get as far as possible the angle you're gliding at is the same regardless. Yeah, glide ratio (rise:run) is numerically equivalent to lift:drag. Weight isn’t a factor in lift or drag, so weight has no effect on glide ratio.

On closer inspection the afore-mentioned Mirage IIIE was specifically designed as a Multi-role/Strike aircraft and was a solid aircraft. I wonder why it wasn't considered. Politics? Feeling an obligation to buy from their American patrons, or lingering Franco-German animosity perhaps.

Platystemon posted:Yeah, glide ratio (rise:run) is numerically equivalent to lift:drag. To clarify, this applies only to maximum glide ratio. Weight is absolutely a factor in net lift (more downward force from gravity to cancel out the upward force from lift. That's why maximum takeoff weight is a thing) so if you increase weight you need to travel faster to generate more lift to get back to the same net lift as a lighter plane and restore your glide ratio. The link posted earlier about adding ballast to a glider is specific about the purpose being to raise the speed at which maximum glide ratio occurs. People keep arguing past each other because glide ratio and maximum glide ratio are being used interchangeably.

Getting a Mig 21 in North America or Europe is pretty easy. http://www.raptoraviation.com/aircraft%20spec%20pages/MiG21UM%20R13.html I don't know how current that ad is, but there's plenty to go around. Ebay Motors has sold them every year. They go from 20,000$ to 100,000$ usually, depending on the engine condition. Main issue is the life of the engine at 1500 hours, so if you are on the market, be cautious of the engine nearing its life. Last year San Diego Air & Space Museum sold a Mig21, two spare engines, engine lift, lots of tires, all kinds of extras, and included in the deal work contract for a Belarussian man who they had gotten into America who used to be an enlisted Mig-mechanic in the soviet air forces. I think the price was reasonable plus annual salary of mechanic at 70 or so thousand, with benefits. It's a good deal when buying a Soviet Fighter, you get a Soviet. Last thing from FAA I found is that there's 44 flying Mig21s in the US alone. The operating cost is about 4500 bucks an hour. Many of the flying soviet fighters in the US, not just 21s, can be, and are, contracted to the USAF to fly aggressor. Vahakyla fucked around with this message at 16:44 on Sep 5, 2017 |

IIRC it's fairly difficult to get licensed to fly one. You need a whole bunch of hours in an L-39 basically I think.

Yeah, the Licence of Authorization apparently includes hours in L-29, L-39, then the Mig, and it goes on better side of 30 grand. If you get one and become proficient in them, you can go work for Draken International. http://www.drakenintl.com/ Vahakyla fucked around with this message at 16:50 on Sep 5, 2017 |

That all sounds reasonable but I would be worried about the hidden costs. Like, does the included Soviet maintenance person distill his own vodka or is that cost expected to be born under the 'hydraulic fluid' budget (obviously only for fluids consumed during working hours)?

It's a voluntary flight, all Delta has to do is have people sign waivers in the terminal saying you get on at your own risk. If they are willing to risk their equipment that's on them, the lives of the passengers was entirely on those passengers. It's not like didn't know a loving hurricane was arriving.

The crazy winds are all near the eye wall, the winds at that airport weren't anything special at the time. The only time I've gotten air sick was landing at NRT on a day with 40mph winds and gusts up to 80.

How capable is the Scorpion? Relative to other planes, it's extremely small, there has to be a lot of short comings of some kind, right? VVVV I don't, I guess larger multi-role fighters are like the Super Hornet or other crafts that share a similar role to the Scorpion like the Tucanos. One of the "selling points" of the Scorpion was that it could do low-speed intercepts. Complete with lovely defense industry music. (who makes thise music?
