If you're not set on Brits, I prefer Canadians due to some of the special rules they get like Mission Tactics. I also like the Canadian Armoured Recce list from the Market Garden book. Their Shermans are expensive, but they have a few extra special rules that are quite helpful. The Road to Rome book just came out too and it has some other Commonwealth armor lists like South Africans and Kiwis, but I haven't had a chance to digest those lists yet. Open Fire! is a great start for Commonwealth tanks, especially if you can trade the axis for more Shermans. Some lists let you take 2 regular shermans and 2 fireflies per platoon, so it'd be good to have 4 fireflies available.

Looking at the Canadian rules they do seem pretty great, rerolls to hop back in tanks seems good from what I've read. Plus the command team always living unless they end up too far away is probably handy.

The other thing you should take a look at are plastic soldier company late war UK infantry. Plastic soldier company were more realistically proportioned in the past, but the details weren't very good. The late war UK infantry are a new release, and they're made in a new, more beefy style. They look pretty good and you can get a full company (3 infantry platoons + command) for about $30. It's good to have infantry in support of tanks (you want them to have transport if you run them in a tank company though), but it also lets you run an infantry company with tank support if you like.

Actually, the Market Garden Guards infantry get the Platoon, Debus! rule, which gives them a 3+ save when riding tanks. This means it's totally viable to have them ride on your Shermans/Cromwells.

I still like Canadians in Ram Kangeroos better, but if you're starting out that's a great suggestion.

Sounds good, I've been eyeballing some of the PSC stuff since it seemed cheap for the sheer number of dudes you get. Our FLGS sells a bunch of FoW stuff I'll have to see. How much Open Fire! costs there.

If anyone else paint 28mm samurai, some good news: the lack of decals for banners etc. is now somewhat solved as Steel Fist Miniatures have started to put out transfer sheets. http://www.steelfistminiatures.com/products/decals_or_transfers I ordered a few and will post a review once I get them. Last time I know that it was possible to find Tokugawa transfers must have been way back in 2008, 2009 or so. I'm very happy.

If not I'll look at trading it or ebaying it off. Models all look pretty nice, pretty much everything is plastic and they give you magnets for the Sherman turrets which was pretty neat. What does everyone usually do for painting up these guys? I was thinking doing a base layer of drab green, a wash, then touching up and adding color to the baggage/tracks/wheels and adding markings was probably the main thing, any other details I should aim for or be aware of?

I had a good text and photo tutorial, but I cannot find it for the life of me. Vallejo Brown Violet was used for the base, washed, and worked up. At any rate, something like this should help you out.

As I understand, the Open Fire! was also sculpted instead of CAD/CAM like the current line of plastics, and was done at an altogether different factory. Would be nice if they could re-release it as a set of maybe 5 Shermans and 5 PzIVs now that the plastic M4A3s are suppose to be out in the next month or two.

I know this is going to sound kind of dumb, but is it possible to just plastic army men (war appropriate if possible) to play some of these games like black powder or bolt action? I don't mind getting the rule books, I just want to see if my friend and I like it first, before I say drop money on Pegagsus Bridge for Bolt Action which looks awesome, or some other set. I also suck at painting...so that plays into it too.

It's more than possible, it's extremely appropriate and cheaper! If you look for 1/72 scale army men, you can get about fifty guys for  . Actually doing stuff in 20mm is still about as cheap as doing it in 15mm. Even with PSC putting out cheap tanks and infantry you're not really saving a huge amount. Guns are a bit harder to get though.

I'm running that Mechanized Aces campaign at my LGS, and we just had Turn 2 last night. The Axis swept again, and in order for the Allies to have a shot at winning the campaign, they need to sweep next week, which is unlikely. The two Allied players who are consistent in showing up are new players to table-top war gaming in general, and can be unfocused to say the least. The Axis side is myself, and another player who is new to FoW, but a 40k vet. Unfortunately, I highly doubt the Allies are going to pull off anything other than getting tabled three weeks in a row. One kid has never really run infantry before, and decided to run the Polish AK list. Normally his poor decision making is made up for with Soviet armor, but he doesn't have that to back him up. (Last night he gave everyone SMGs, so he more or less got slaughtered running into German MG troops hiding in a tree line.) The other Allied player, running Americans, has picked a decent army (Cavalry Recon) but hamstrings himself on poor army composition and bad table top decisions. Like running only two platoons with a single Recon element so he can take Chaffees, and to his own admission being 70 points under on Turn 1 last week (my Italians won by MGing his Jeeps and forcing morale checks). This week he took the same exact force, but with the addition of Priority Air with Air Superiority and Rockets, and went against my Italians again. My own poor dice rolls are the only thing that saved him from losing on the first turn. My point is, for the Allies to have a shot at taking the campaign, I'm asking players who normally rely on either their equipment or their partners in a 2v2 battle to win, to pull a hat-trick that is difficult for experienced players. I'm really thinking of restarting the campaign and rearranging the teams to actually give an even shake to both sides. I'm the veteran player in the group, and my partner is a veteran tabletop player, against two people who are new to the game and gaming in general. I really think it would be better to reorganize this, or if we could get one other person to show up consistently, I could step back and just play ref/GM, instead of being the unstoppable Italian murder machine that I've become (and by all rights shouldn't be in this kind of environment). I'll see what they want to do next week, but I'm not sure this is really 'fun' because the Allies seem to lose each game before the first die roll just by the kind of poor choices they make. Maybe I'll just pull the plug altogether and just run Armor Aces once Remagen comes out. Or a Firestorm campaign, that might be a little more even handed.

Started painting up some Bolt Action! British Airborne, based on the South Staffordshire Regiment (the reenactment unit I'm a member of), and now I'm  because they're wearing the wrong pants for airlanding troops.I mean whatever, at this scale who cares, right? Historicals: Those are not the proper trousers for British gliderborne troops in September of 1944!
