I'm in NJ, and I have the opposite situation- I can pronounce all of those the same but I feel like I'm pretending to be this lady. There's a huge swath of the center of the US where people seem to only have about one and a half vowel sounds they use in every word

Treasa. Yeah, I know that's a valid Irish name but it was pronounced "Theresa" and the person in question isn't Irish.

This semester I have a new crop of students with ridiculous names. Some highlights: Jaxin Ryzoh Jayden Ezra (yes, a real name, but still very unusual) Jocko Rainbow (a boy) Griffin Two different kids named Aslan Bonus name-related hilarity: we have a Korean student named Ju, and she struggles quite a bit with English. One of the other teachers asked what I think we should do about "the Ju problem."

We had a Japanese exchange student stay with us when I was a kid, he was pretty cool. His name was Yu, which isn't unusual but it did result in multiple unintentional comedy routines. I need to speak to Yu. Me? What's up? No, not you, Yu. You? Not me, Yu. Me? What? Yu! Where is Yu? I'm right here! No, not you, Yu!

When I was in fourth grade, my class had a visiting teaching student from Japan named Mami (not a weird name), which is pronounced close enough to "mommy" for us to get a lengthy lecture before she arrived about how we shouldn't make any jokes about her name. To our credit, I don't think any jokes actually were made, but it was still memorable. Seen in passing as a nametag on a cubby in a community-college classroom: Kearnsley. For someone who's presumably an adult. Okay?

They weren't exchange students, either - their parents were immigrants. I had a class once with a "Yuu" and a "Noh." "What do you say?" "huh?" "no, not you." "huh?" "no, not Noh." "teacher, what?!" Also fraternal twins Yuuya and Yuya. God dammit, Japan.
