Yeah, it’s a nice idea, but vast generalised statements are usually anathema to “good” history and often books like this just serve to disguise how little we actually know about human societies from before the historiographical record began.

I’m reading “The Dawn of Everything” written by the same guy who rote “Debt: The first 5,000 Years”. I have no idea how accurate it is, but the general thesis is that human society is not a straight forward evolution from hunter gather, horticulture, farming civilization etc. There’s lots of “choices” that early societies made and there’s a lot of variation within.

The main point is that you can’t look at the Kung people of the Kalahari and and extrapolate their society to every pre-modern society on earth. which is funny, because around the time I was taking anthropology classes in college, that seemed to be the implication.

But yeah, there’s a lot of conjecture coming from like shards of pottery and burial sites.

You don't just sail wherever, you follow the currents. So it's ~5000km of open ocean sailing across the Atlantic compared to ~7000km across the Pacific, but you've got to sail down the inhospitable coast of west Africa first.

if you sailed up past Japan and followed the North Pacific current, you’d end up in probably the Pacific Northwest though, from that map. Sail off the right hand side of the map and onto the left hand side.
I’m not a sailor though, so I could be wrong on this.

The thing with thought experiments like China colonising north america or kickstarting the Industrial revolution is the inherent implication that people would just be europeans if given the chance.

When in reality enough people would have looked at the necessary brutality like the north atlantic slave trade and noped out.

The Song dynasty, the ones who made the proposal, had millions of (castrated) slaves, all Mongolians, Vietnamese, or other conquered "lesser" ethnic groups per their perspective. People are, in many times and many places, not ideal.

Yeah slavery existed in many forms across many cultures but considering the lasting effects of the american genocides or the ongoing! "underdevelopment" of Africa by Europe/Anglo countries pointing to random luck in geography robs the actors of a fair bit of (monstrous) agency

I only took Covid seriously when it hit Italy because I'm so used to cable news hyping up "scary Chinese disease" every few years. Got totally owned when it came roaring through and killed all of those people.

are those state-owned enterprises commanded centrally, or do they just have a general purpose that they pursue in a decentralized manner? a state owned enterprise alone does not a command economy make.
