Endman posted:Yeah, it’s a nice idea, but vast generalised statements are usually anathema to “good” history and often books like this just serve to disguise how little we actually know about human societies from before the historiographical record began. I’m reading “The Dawn of Everything” written by the same guy who rote “Debt: The first 5,000 Years”. I have no idea how accurate it is, but the general thesis is that human society is not a straight forward evolution from hunter gather, horticulture, farming civilization etc. There’s lots of “choices” that early societies made and there’s a lot of variation within. The main point is that you can’t look at the Kung people of the Kalahari and and extrapolate their society to every pre-modern society on earth. which is funny, because around the time I was taking anthropology classes in college, that seemed to be the implication. But yeah, there’s a lot of conjecture coming from like shards of pottery and burial sites.

So it's ~5000km of open ocean sailing across the Atlantic compared to ~7000km across the Pacific, but you've got to sail down the inhospitable coast of west Africa first. if you sailed up past Japan and followed the North Pacific current, you’d end up in probably the Pacific Northwest though, from that map. Sail off the right hand side of the map and onto the left hand side. I’m not a sailor though, so I could be wrong on this.

The thing with thought experiments like China colonising north america or kickstarting the Industrial revolution is the inherent implication that people would just be europeans if given the chance. When in reality enough people would have looked at the necessary brutality like the north atlantic slave trade and noped out.

irl anarchists i know are mostly OK. we might disagree on this or that minor thing, but they're great comrades otoh, i rarely see a twitter anarchist that doesn't walk in complete lockstep with US/MIC global agenda. it's almost like the popular US website is just an arm of the US propaganda machine, but surely that can't be true, they have free press!

China doesn't have a command economy. Technically it's less of a mixed economy than America, it's just there is more direction to their government spending.
