Wittes breaks down some of the important points.

https://twitter.com/benjaminwittes/status/884159304386957313

Some of the points
-First, note the sourcing. This is clearly NOT an investigative leak. This is a set of White House admissions in response to the story.
-The date on this meeting may actually be exculpatory to Trump in one way. Why? It predates the disclosures, I think, of Russian hacking. /4/
-This graf is devastating, however. It shows that the Trump folks were willing to cooperate with Kremlin in exchange for dirt on Hillary.
-This graf is also devastating. Trump Jr admits that his ONLY interest in the meeting was the dirt the Russians might provide on Clinton. /7/
-This is a very interesting graf. POTUS denies knowledge and Trump Jr.'s statement clears both Manafort and Kushner. Jr. takes the fall. /8/

There's a lot of virtue in planning big housing developments years in advance before you're allowing people from rural areas to move there via the household registration system.

For one, imagine if people in charge of the bay area started building upwards 20 years ago for anticipated demand today.

I think most of the Trump/Kushner clan's actions during the elections can be explained by an impressive amount of complacency when it comes to dealing with shady Russians. It's barely a secret that the entire real estate empire is fueled by overseas money, and they had never been caught or investigated very seriously. When the campaign began picking up steam they just continued meeting with the same shady Russian people they always had and it never occured to them that there would be long-term consequences. They can't explain the Russian contacts because they had been complacently doing shady deals with them for decades and it never occured to them to be more discreet.

there's management and there's the creation of an underclass

but sure, this was a good system

quote:

And it is not just the boarders who suffer. In all kinds of education, rural children have less chance of doing well than their urban counterparts. Less than 10% of them go to senior high-school, compared with 70% of their peers in cities. That is because the government stacks the system against them.

Everyone in China has to attend school for nine years—until the end of junior high school. But it was not until 2007 that all rural children could do so without paying. Like city dwellers, they still have to pay for senior high school. But their families tend to be much poorer, so few can afford it. And rural schools are far more rudimentary. Local governments are responsible for running them. If officials have tax revenue to spare, they see no point in doling it out in the countryside. How can you boost growth, they wonder, by spending money on villagers who will eventually move away?

for management

quote:

According to their research in 2000, they state that in Beijing, nearly half of the rural migrants’ housing is without kitchen and bathroom, 40% of their housing is very crowded, with 4–6 people sharing one small room, and 20% of them admitted that they did not have running water.

quote:

Wang [6] also views that the rural migrants in Beijing have very few housing choices without hukou. The Beijing urban hukou allows residents to purchase three types of housing with reliable financial capabilities. These three types of housing are as follows: (1) Commercial Housing; (2) Economically Affordable Housing; (3) Low-rent Housing. However, these choices are unattainable by rural migrants since one Square Meter would cost around 30,000 RMB. This automatically would make anyone understand that very few rural migrants can afford their own housing in Beijing.

eh, peven?

quote:

In China’s biggest cities, some 40 percent of the population is "unofficial" — lacking the city’s hukou. Shanghai, for instance, has an officially registered population of about 13 million, plus 10 or 11 million migrant workers, who can’t access the same social services.

Many such cities resist giving hukous, and the accompanying access to medical care, education and pensions, to all these people. They say they simply can’t afford it.
