Based on the old TTRPG writeups, the dead are basically shades with little mind of sense of self. The intelligent dead are actually a bunch of them rolled together into new beings; the dead are less continuations of the original and more a byproduct of them. The skull-headed beasts of burden are made from the dead, since they can travel the void without breaking down like more traditionally physical vehicles will. There’s mention that the multi-dead ones act like leaders, protecting and exploiting the rest of the dead as their lesser kin. The major use of the dead is as unskilled labor.

I like how there is some tension between Nyave and White Chain. I don't think that White Chain is driving the tension but I bet there is a large faction that wants White Chain in charge since she is seen as the "Successor" to Salami Dave.
