Yeah not a bad idea. At one point very early in my career (before I started working at my current job) I programmed a basic little slot machine in C# WinForms. My career goal was to get a job at a gaming place since they're the biggest "tech" places in the city.

I'll need a pool table in a room that won't fit it well, a mini cooper delivery car (financed of course), a sense of iron-clad job security where nothing can go wrong, and to take a jab at myself, when the restaurant has a bad month I'll simply write it off with "the past is in the past." and justify an industrial sous vide cooker the next day out of budget (that won't get used much).

Well I had a big ol post talking about the budget and last month, but I lost it. I'll retype it sometime.

Basically the gist is that August went really well, and I'm still working on September's budget (I know I know). As I said I'm pretty much there so it's not like we're frozen with being unable to get groceries or something, but I just still need to analyze the house for baby stuff. Probably gonna do a $700 payment to the car or so.

Ynab plus a cash envelope system is time consuming to manage. Basically I figure if we have no money left or some money left in the envelopes then we meet the budget. I still had $40 in discretionary leftover. I posted about pet and utility overages a few days ago I think.

You don't log the cash and budget in ynab? Wtf?

Budget everything. When you take cash out and put it into the envelop, enter an expense. Payee: envelope; budget category: budget category; amount: amount.

Simple.

(I do record all cash transactions myself, but a lot of folks don't like doing that.)

My solution is to just stay away from cash, but that obviously opens up pandora box to credit card spending, so definitely varies person to person.

And I probably sometimes do spend more because of that.

I rarely use cash. Sometimes I sell something on Craigslist and receive cash, or a friend trues up after lunch, etc. I log it all (with a balance adjustment every now and then..) because that's how I do. Otherwise it's CC so I can track it.

If doing cash only, I think tracking is needed at least somewhat.

Meh sorry guys bunch of poo poo has been happening.

Wife got sideswiped on the freeway in our car. Non-fault accident of course. She'll be calling their insurance today. Not much damage, but I'm betting shop time.
My computer died (I think it's the mobo or cpu).
Was out of town for the weekend.
Bike gearing and chain got screwed up somehow, so I've been doing 10 hour days (wife dropping me off and picking me up).

Will update and reply later.

Thanks IS. Basically I've just been heavily preoccupied.

The car crash was a scare for my wife (she's fine, baby wasn't with her), but beyond that (excluding the trip to visit family) everything has been a relatively minor annoyance. The bike being the worst of it since it means so much wasted time. I'll likely take that into the shop tonight. I'm not interested in screwing with bike casettes yet.

But yeah for some financial perspective this stuff would have been far more than an annoyance before. One time our only vehicle's alternator and battery went out at the same time, and granted we were basically a 1.5 income family and very poor, but that crippled us with $700 in payday loans.

This will be a high income month, too, since we aren't paying health insurance premiums, so we should still end up in a decent place comparative to last month (noting that I haven't forecasted).

I'll get some numbers posted for everyone soon. I'll try to do it today depending how busy everything is. I'm limited to doing it at work at the moment and I need to catch everything up. I had to stop reading. It started moving more quickly than I could keep up, and the whole beginning with the fake picture had me all :psyduck:.

Well I did have some ideas, but I wasn't sure I wanted to commit to them at that point (and it turns out I didn't). That company that interviewed me for that Angular role a month or two back wants to re-interview me for another position supposedly sometime this week. Maybe that will work out, as we've been through the interview process once before and I've already done some trial code for them. Same guys, so who knows.

Working for actual casinos yeah isn't great. It pays pretty good once you move up in the ranks, but well you know it sounds like. The company I'm thinking about makes slot machines and stuff, but it's definitely a different type of environment and culture. Their engineers ride around on bikes inside the building and stuff to get around (it's massively big), they have a gym, normal hours, good culture, etc.

We have a budget. It's just not in YNAB so I haven't posted it yet - since we're on the envelope system it's hard to get motivated to reconcile the numbers. Plus football season started and my home pc is going to be dead for a little bit of time. Phone posting is tough because my app crashes all the time causing me to lose posts I make (which drives me crazy). All of that (time, technology) is why I've been a little more quiet.

If you guys want a spreadsheet version of what's going on, then I can likely oblige later today. YNAB will have to be a shoulder shrug, until next week some time.

Wife got a new phone so cash transactions will be able to be entered on the fly now, instead of digging through receipts. Windows Phone doesn't have a YNAB app and that's what we've both been running.

Alright will do. I'll try to do that tonight since we have another busy weekend.

I've also started a business to get some side income going.Besides a domain I bought, and a product I'm developing software for which mostly came out of the business budget, there's really nothing else until the software is done. Should be exciting if it goes somewhere. I'll go into this more when something has actually happened.

I also have been following up on all of the local job leads that I can in the meantime. Can't remember if I mentioned it, but that local company that contacted me about a solutions architect position a couple months ago emailed me about another position. Current boss said we'll probably get a bonus in April or May. I'm ready to move on.

They're going OK. The past month of weekends has been just super busy. We've been tailgating, hosting get togethers, and doing family stuff every weekend lately. My sister is going out of town in October, so I'll be taking some vacation to watch the baby. That'll be nice, and overdue. So that's basically why I don't have spreadsheet numbers posted.

However - I got my computer working again last night. I ended up taking everything apart, cleaning it all, and reseating the CPU / applying new thermal paste / reseating the RAM, and it booted up fine. Which is good because I need my desktop. Beyond work I'll be working on a learning software for the Oculus Rift, and I'll also be trying to make it compatible with consoles and mobile phones since they have their own VR solutions.

Budget numbers:
My boss is out of town today and I'm a little short on work. I'll do my best to take some time this morning to post the numbers. I may take a short break from the thread after that (a few weeks or so), as my attention is currently crazily tied up. I'll still track and budget though.
