This was a paper (when it was still a paper anyway) that said the best outcome for the 2015 election was the continuation of the Tory/Liberal coalition! Which isn't to say it hasn't, I don't pay enough attention to it to say either way, but it would be a surprise. I've also just found out that The I is no longer owned by them. And hasn't been for a year. Odd that.

There's a good quote by a second waver (I await TinTower's shocked reaction at that) that I can't find but basically amounts to "the justice system treats violence against women as a joke and violence by women as a joke, because it treats the idea of a woman as an agent as a joke."

Listening to Richard Burgon on Newsnight was an exercise in frustration. First question: what would be the tax take as a percentage of GDP if Labour got into power and implemented all of it's policies? Second question: in what previous year was the ratio of tax take to GDP this high? Is it considered hard-hitting political interviewing now to pick a figure at random from either the manifesto or economy in general and then ask a politician to regurgitate it? She could just as easily have asked about the deficit, borrowing, total debt, debt to GDP ratio, etc. etc. It's just a cheap tactic that can only either embarrass someone or provide no useful information whatsoever.

Lord of the Llamas posted:Was this the first time you've ever watched television? I swear it's gotten a lot worse since Diane Abbott screwed up a figure she should have known. Now every interviewer is out to force a similar moment. Take McDonnell and Nick Robinson this morning. He was asked to give the deficit. He gave the actual figure from 15/16 and was proclaimed wrong because Robinson wanted the projected figure from 16/17. Even though the question was vague it sparked a slew of headlines about him getting the answer wrong, none of which said where McDonnell's answer came from. Robinson also accused him on-air of being passed a piece of paper, which McDonnell denied. That was widely reported in the press too. Robinson then went on to retract the accusation on Twitter after a crew member from the radio car told him McDonnell definitely wasn't passed anything. How is it reasonable to retract something on Twitter that was said on national radio and reported in national newspapers? It's lazy journalism that panders to headline writers, and it's a real shame to see the BBC indulging in it quite so much.

On an individual level, it's obviously beneficial for women on trial that they frequently get more lenient sentences - although I wonder whether the judge's comments would have been the same here, if the future Dr Woodward had been from an ethnic minority or not attractive. But it is a problem, and one that (amusingly) both feminists and MRAs agree on, but probably for different reasons. I seem to remember reading that female defendants get more lenient sentences irrespective of whether the judge is a man or woman, so it is a societal/cultural issue.

Another Blairite talking down Labour's chances in the run up to the election:quote:The union boss set his close ally Jeremy Corbyn a target of holding onto just 200 parliamentary constituencies after 8 June, a performance which would be Labour's worst since 1935. The extent of Labour's ambition is clearly damage limitation at this point. Do we agree with Len that the worst Labour performance for over 80 years would be a good result?
