The Warp is another dimension that runs parallel to reality, and by traveling through the warp you can cross space far quicker. There's a downside. The Warp is essentially a sea of pure psychic energy, and it's inhabited by unfathomable beings of incomprehensible malice and cruelty. Simply looking into the warp unprotected would drive you mad, and if the fields that protect each ship as they travel are compromised (even for an instant) then daemons will cross the threshold and wreak havoc among the crew. There are numerous stories of ships being lost to the warp, and often those are eventually returned to reality in the form of space hulks. A space hulk is essentially an amalgamation of ships, the interstellar equivalent of the tides of an ocean bringing together a collection of garbage, and actual dimensions are hard to convey. However then can easily be tens of kilometers long and full of twisting corridors and arrangements that make safe travel impossible. You could easily spend a lifetime trying to cross one, although the typical reason for this is because something horrible will kill you along the way.

One of the major themes of 40K is that progress is dead. A gun made ten thousand years ago will typically be far superior to anything that can be made today, so finding a space hulk is often a massive boon. Entire starships have been resurrected from a space hulk and often they carry archaeotech, lost treasures of the Dark Age of Technology, but they also typically carry numerous foes. The most elite members of the Imperium's most elite fighting force, Terminators of the Adeptus Astartes (Space Marines) are often tasks with purging a space hulk and recovering the treasures within.

It's not an easy job.

I had a stint where I thought I wanted to play 40k but it turns out I'm just really into the setting and I don't like Games Workshop or their games. I wish that the IP was owned by anyone else so that it could be used in a more open way.

I'd be curious if you still want this after you play the tech demo as it is now. Getting in and out of ships in space is cancer/aids/impossible. Your character pulses back and forth and jerks around, and every other attempt to get in a ship ends up shooting you across the galaxy at speeds faster than a ship can fly. I imagine if you manage to obtain a ship made from doors, opening and closing just one would make the entire ship explode.

Yes. The smallest starship in Warhammer 40K is the size Imperial Star Destroyer and carries tens of thousands of crew. Each vessel is a shrine to the Machine God, most being millennia old and carrying technology that man has long since lost the ability to recreate or even maintain outside the use of byzantine rituals. They are as much cathedrals as they are conveyances. To the men trapped inside the ships represent their only protection again the uncaring void, the unspeakable horrors of the Warp, and the angry fire of their enemies. It's only natural then that such vessels would be decorated in demonstrations of adoration and worship. The crew are typically pressed into service, taken from worlds that may never seen a machine and forced to toil in horrible conditions to ensure the vessel runs smoothly. Imagine work gangs of hundreds of men maneuvering torpedoes hundreds of meters long into firing tubes, while tech priests sing praises and glory in the hope that the Machine Spirit of the torpedo that is likely older than all of the workers combined will rouse itself in fury to detonate its holy payload.

Warhammer 40K is one of the most thematic and flavorful universes in science fiction. Not everyone likes it, but it's unflinchingly epic and awesome.

Welcome back forums

CIG must be loving this, they're not at fault, it's all because of Beer :allears:

My framerate sucks, I just spent 2 hours doing nothing and...

I always feel like I am missing something.

What parts of the engine is done and what is left?

quote:

While I am impressed by the technical feats achieved to bring us the mini-PU 2.0, I think there is still a lot of "game engine" work to do.
First up, there are conceptually two components of the engine - client game engine and server game engine. Both engines are quite far along but have a long way to go still. Also, remember that something which seems done is never actually truly done - there are always improvements that can be made, or even the potential of total re-writes if later it is found out that a specific part of the engine doesn't do what it needs to do. We also don't have any idea how far along most components are from not-done to done - sometimes not shared with us and other times the current version is shared but not necessarily done yet.
That said, my totally unqualified guesstimate list is:
"Done"
* PVR rendering (client)
* 64 bit map rendering (client)
* Multi-threaded game engine (client and server)
* Local physics grid * Initial multicrew, fps etc - 2.0 features framework
"nearly done"
* Persistance (server)
* Shopping (server + client)
* Star Marine/FPS - 0G combat (server + client)
* Cargo hauling, mining (both)
* Orgs, chat, etc (both)
* Jump points + moving to new server instance on different system (both)
* Multicrew huds, turrets etc (both)
* Docking/boarding (both)
* Single player capability (client mostly)
* Basic NPC AI for subsumption and landing zones (both)
"todo/long ways off"
* Procedural landing (both)
* Economy/trading (server)
* Damage states + repair (both)
* Moving to different server instance in same system (server)
* Larger player counts on multicrew (both)
* Player owned economy nodes (both)
* NPC AI for multiple purposese - on ship, marketplace, etc (both)

It doesn't work that way D:

quote:

Major pieces left,
Instancing
Planetary landing
Apart from that the core of the engine is there with 2.0

quote:

We are basically 1/3 through.

Every answer is different, Open Development at work!

I think the current 40K is for 'chaos undivided'; Fantasy got killed off.

It was a shame as well, because Fantasy had a slightly more pernicious and 'creeping horror' feel to the predations of chaos, who were coming out of the northern wastes, but also managed to tempt normal people to support it. Chaos started to come out of the cold as generic bad guy bezerkers, and then _nothin'_.
