On something like a WRX I'd have expected a different tune and such, not a bunch of custom performance parts and mods.

Seems brazen as gently caress lol

I think there's a wide spread of behavior. Jaguar sending us a preproduction I-Pace that wouldn't charge properly probably happens at least as often as Ferrari sending Chris Harris a Scuderia on qualifying tires with an extra 50hp in the engine.

Car sales are only one of many industries which are finely tuned exploitation machines for financially illiterate and/or desperate people. Predatory financial practices like what's found in car dealerships and payday loan places need to be illegal.

Calling people who've had a vehicle repo'd "trash" illuminates both a lack of empathy and a lack of intelligence required to understand that reality is more complicated than your idiotic moralistic ideology supposes.

Anyway, I recently spent a few days tootling around in a brand new Ford Edge Titanium and while it was a commendable rental car I have no idea why someone would pay $45k for one; the interior design is not good and it very much does not feel like a premium product. Sync 3 is pretty decent and the adaptive cruise control was excellent, though, so while buying one for sticker would be stupid as hell I would be happy getting one as a rental again.

I like watching his videos too, but he has weird opinions sometimes. I can't think of any specific examples right now, but I remember multiple times hearing him describe something, thinking that "wow that's a great feature" and then he goes "yeah so this is obviously bad and the car should get 0 points for this feature"

Yeah, the fact that there are dealerships that explicitly deal in finding loans for people with multiple repossessions should be proof enough that this isn't a problem that lies entirely (or even mostly) at the feet of borrowers. Car salespeople have terrible reputations, but at some point you still have to trust that the person selling you a thing is in fact acting in good faith and not literally helping you dig a shallow grave for your financial future.

I agree that Savagegeese, Alex on Autos, The Straight Pipes, and Consumer Reports' paywalled content are arguably the best automotive reviews out there. Autogefühl and CNET's Roadshow are solid when Thomas or Brian Cooley are hosting, respectively.

I guess I could see how people don't like Savagegeese's style, but from a technical perspective it's arguably some of the best out there. If anything, he should double-down on the technical side of his reviews, which appears to be happening with things like the corner weight scales, more chassis detail, and now doing things like frequency response charts of the audio systems.

His technical knowledge is pretty legit, and his production values are high, but I still don't like him at all. I find his attitude incredibly off-putting, and always seems like he's one bad day away from snapping and going off on a slur-filled tirade. Plus, his videos that aren't about reviewing a specific car are terrible. Like the video about auto loan debt he spends half the video bitching about regulations and his property taxes.

I'm noticing the rental companies are specing out their cars cheaper and cheaper. A few rentals ago I wound up with a Kia Optima with manual driver and passenger seats. More recently, I had a Hyundai Sonata that was configured the same way. The 4Runner was the only vehicle that was decently equipped and had navigation, which most of these cars usually don't.

Who knew that a Sonata could crack 40 mpg on the open road? Not sure if it was an honest 40 since I forgot to tally up the fuel and mileage myself. Too bad it looked, felt and sounded like driving a Tupperware bin.

Interestingly, financial literacy isn't taught in (most) US schools. I can't imagine why not, it seems like such a basic item for preparing kids for the world ahead!

Ah well, I guess it's for the best, we'd be putting a lot of payday loan/BHPH lot/financial sector parasite jobs at risk if people knew how to save and use their money. Make sure they know that mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell, now that's important.

I've noticed rental car companies holding onto fleets longer for sure. I had one over 40k miles recently. Sonatas are fine, what are you comparing it to? I'd take a sonata over the last-gen rental only Malibu or an Altima any day.

One of the few textbooks from college that I saved outside of my major was for a class called quantitative literacy, and it was all about how to understand and calculate taxes, mortgages, loan interest rates, insurance calculation, etc. Actual useful math. It was the best math class I've ever taken, and also the last. That class should have been mandatory in highschool.

That's the part that also needs to be taught in school - a level of general cynicism, so that you know that out there in the real world, there are people who will screw you over for a nickel. Financial literacy counts too, since you can't defend yourself from rear end in a top hat salesmen without it, but it's not sufficient by itself.

What are some sleazy tactics sales people use to deceive you?
Generally I do my research so I know what car I’m getting and roughly what margin is on the car.
I tell them I’m looking to get X amount off a vehicle of my choice and I decline all the extras like rust proofing or extended warranty.
The bill of sale is straightforward. The financing is straight forward and that’s it. The only issue is the pressure done by the financing team.

Now you could say it’s financially illiterate to bury most of your savings into a depreciating asset or to buy new. But sometimes that extra money carries a mental, intangible value to you. Especially if you drive the car until it’s dead so depreciation doesn’t matter.

The sleezy part is negotiating the price of the car based on monthly payments and after the sale turning them over to the manager to berate them for a half hour about how the car they just purchased is a ticking time bomb that requires an extended warranty.

This is so irritating, especially when they keep doing it after I repeatedly tell them I don't care about the payments, I'm focusing on the actual cost of the vehicle.
