For a counterexample, they had no luck at all catching a pedophile ring that uses Tor to connect to a common dead drop (a Usenet newsgroup, specifically) to exchange messages and child porn, because they have no idea where to wiretap. The only guys they caught used commercial VPNs (which can be subpoenaed for customer data, and will usually comply even internationally because no place in the world is safe for pedophiles) instead of the recommended Tor, or were identified through painstaking traditional detective work, like cross-referencing a particular brand and model of bedsheets with a particular brand of mass-produced painting visible in the background of photos to identify the motel room, or paying visits to all car dealers in the state until they found one who could identify the make and model of a car from its interior (an orange Pontiac Aztec lol)

It's been at least twenty five years since I last picked up one so I don't remember them all as I once did but it wouldn't surprise me a bit. I mean sure, I get that in fantasy novels aimed at kids you're not necessarily going to get the most nuanced depiction of antagonists (or protagonists, for that matter), but there was a serious undercurrent of "treacherous untermenschen jealously trying to tear down the society built by the noble Aryan-mice" in those books.

People like him and Trump are like the complete opposite of my Dad. He became of age when the Vietnam war was just starting up. He decided that it'd be a good path after high school, and his father proudly served, so he tried to enlist in the Air Force. The Air Force took one look at this literal 98 lb weakling (Dad was superthin), found his flat feet, and he got a permanent medical deferment. Then the Draft kicked in. He spent the Vietnam years in SF, hanging out with the Grateful Dead.
