I really really really wanted an E34 but it seems like there's 20 E39's for every E34. Doesn't help that I'm filtering by later model 540i models with a manual, which will sometimes show literally 0 results in continental US but perhaps a dozen in equivalent E39s. Which are also cheaper. M5's are more common, for chrissakes.

There were only 1500ish E34 540i 6 speeds made for north america. I think slightly less than the amount of M5s.

Years ago I had an E34 535i 5MT and it was a very cool car but also very 80s in all the good and bad ways. The E39 is vastly more modern and in many ways the better car, especially in 2024. It's like going from an E30 to E46 (yes skipping the E36).

My family had a 525i touring that my sibling and I both learned to drive on, and that is definitely closer to E30 than E36. The E39 my dad had around the same time felt like a space ship by comparison.

I'm hoping the fact that it's the 4 cyl will keep the price down a bit; I've noticed that the 318s are in better shape in general since it's not the performance model (though this one is the is trim so it should have the limited slip differential).

I had this car in Alpine White and still think about it often. IIRC, the is pretty much had full ///M suspension. I put a Dinan muffler on it. Sold it when I bought my first e46 and sadly the buyer totaled it. :rip: (No human injuries, just the car)

Brought it in with Service Engine Light on:

One Hour for Diagnostic: $190
Fuel Tank Vent Valve Replacement Part: $122
Labor $175
DME Update Programming: $190

Total with Tax: $740

FWIW, based on the fault I got from Bimmer Code and my Google skills I was expecting them to replace the purge valve.

Did a rough eyeball alignment to get the steering wheel straight (did struts last year) and thankfully the DSC light turned off. Now I just gotta re-attach the detachable tow hook holder by removing the rear bumper. IIRC it wasn't that bad to do... Should pass inspection after that.

Then it's back to hunting that recurring lean code. I'm gonna make myself a smoke machine and see where that air leak is coming from. I read that perhaps a weak fuel pump can produce lean codes as well. All the low hanging fruit like fuel filter and rubber air channels have been changed.

I love driving it, but I wish it was a 530i instead of a 525i. The auto box is growing on me. Fits a big tank like this.

Edit: If I can get my hands on a decently priced 3L engine I might chuck it in at some point.

I checked again and yeah there are some that seem decent now. Euro prices though so more like $130. Probably well worth the cost though.

drat I was never a BMW person before, but my E39 has me looking and E46's, E90's, E34s... drat it.

MAF. I had to replace mine because it was sending the wrong codes. Intake boots eleere fine, CCV no leaks, just the MAF pulled a p0174 lean mode. It's a known issue

Honestly the 2.5l seems to be the one that lasts longer considering the oil pan nut issue and the additional cooling stress on the already fragile system. The 5hp20 or 30? I don't remember, is also needed if you do a swap due to slight differences. It's also more prone to issues.

Interesting, I didn't know that the 2.5L was more reliable. I guess it's not a big deal, but more power is always nice (and could potentially get a super charger), but at that point it's just better to buy a manual 3 liter car. The goal for this one is really to make it a reliable daily driver that looks and feels nice.

Regarding the MAF, I'm hoping to do the smoke test and try to see if ISTA can help me confirm if the MAF is working or not. A new one is $200, and IIRC MAF is one of the parts that it's OEM or don't bother.

It's mostly the same but a couple differences. If I remember the oil pump nut can come loose on all m54s depending on age but the m54b30 seems to have the majority of that issue. It's a real pain to get at due to having to drop the subframe as well.

I don't think I've posted my project so far, I got it for $1500 with major cooling issues at 150k and it's turning out really nice. Still don't know what to do about the minor ding in the front tho

OK so 1 month of intent == 3 months of calendar time. I finally lifted the rear of the e39 wagon today.

So looking for the vibration, nothing jumped out. The air springs were replaced by a shop in 2018-ish, and the car hasn't been driven a ton since then. So figure the rear end was assembled correctly and the shop (BMW specialists) didn't call out any issues aside from the airbags that were known to be bad.

I decided to start the engine and see if I could see something with the wheels spinning. I did. The inside tread seemed to wobble. I got a sharpie and marked the high spots. Maybe they were poorly balanced when mounted? I don't know. Whatever the cause, there's a wobble in both rear tires.

Anyway this jogged my mind and I realized I could swap the style 5 2 piece set on the e34 (which will be sold off), which has much newer tires, onto my car. The style 81s with bad tires go away, I get nicer wheels, everybody wins. Sadly the 16" Fittipaldi star wheels that used to be on the e34 developed a leak in the metal and went away a few years ago; they're probably worth something now. The buyer of the e34 will know they are purchasing a project, so tires will be low on the list of TODOs.

All of my previous cars you could tell by the feel in the seat and the rattle in the windows if you were going expensive speeding ticket fast, thankfully the BMW has an alert.

Did some more driving today, and the P0170 and P0171 came back as usual. I don't know if it's significant or just how it works, but it's always during the first km or so (or the first harder acceleration) that it comes on. If I clear the codes during the drive they will stay off for the remainder of the drive no matter how I drive. I don't think the car is getting crap MPG neither as I was averaging 30 MPG on the way home (some city driving, country roads between 50-70 mph. Seems to have good pulling power and doesn't hesitate on WOT or near WOT. If anything it can feel like it's maybe stumbling slightly when cold started.

Going to do the smoke test and see if anything obvious pops up. Found a cheaper OEM MAF as well, so now in the realm of parts cannoning it if the consensus is that it could be the problem. The car is at 200k km now on the original MAF, so it might be tired anyway.

I've been getting a fault code P0420 "low catalyst system efficiency", this occasionally clears itself but then comes back.

I am wondering if it's related to a cooling system overhaul I did awhile back, the temperature gauge seems to always say the car is running cooler then it did before, slightly below the mid point of the gauge. Could that cause the fouled O2 sensors if the car thinks it's running cooler than it is? Thinking maybe I should replace the thermostat.

The intake boots are new and IIRC I changed the hose to the fuel filter, at least the part at the fuel filter. Isn't it a smaller flexible hose from the fuel filter that joins a solid line up to the engine bay only to then be a soft bit of hose again? I can remember changing the part by the fuel filter at least as well as some smaller hoses near the intake boot / brake booster that were brittle.
