When I first joined TBB I read middle brow books and everyone liked me but the Lit goons hated me. Now I read 18th century poetry to fit in but offline people think I'm a piece of poo poo monster snob.

It's pretty cool.

I'm still nice to everyone while also rolling my eyes at their reading preferences.

Yup, exactly. This is a rule clarification not a change, and the "try to post like someone interested in books" clause has been in the rules for years. All the book jerks around here can still be book jerks. Book jerk competitiveness helps people find cool new things to read. Just put in a little effort and don't post "that sux lol" type shitposts.

For real though I started posting in TBB thinking that book lovers would be the nicest goons and holy poo poo was I wrong. This is easily the meanest subforum, at least of the Finer Arts bunch.

But it sincerely improved my tastes and needs from literature and I've discovered some of my favorite books from the meanest goons. That's TBB for you.

No kidding, it almost put me off from lurking in here for a while.

But I've found I really like some of the threads - the rec thread is amazing, the general sci-fi/fantasy thread is usually friendly (and when we go dunking on books, it's in an interesting way - just look at the recent Expanse discussion) and from what I've read of the Tolkien thread it's chill.

This place can be cool, but it also gets very mean and snobbish and welp, that's SA for you.

I like to think I am not mean as much as I am passionate about stuff. I am willing to give anything an honest go but I also really care about art and literature and will defend my ideas passionately.

EDIT: Like, I find a lack of curiosity the most frustrating thing. I don't get annoyed at genre readers because I think the books are bad, but because they never explore other things than the genre. I get similarly annoyed at people who only read vetted old "classics" instead of exploring contemporary literature as well.

Speaking of cross-genre stuff, it is cool as hell that Marlon James has gone from writing fiction to genre fiction, and I can't wait to read Black Leopard, Red Wolf. His Brief History of Seven Killings went hard.

"Mean" wasn't the right term, either. I don't think anyone has any real hatred towards anyone. The supercilious nature of the lit thread comes off as vitriolic, and it is not welcoming at all compared to, like, CineD or NMD, where people will gladly argue with you and call you a dumbshit, but will at least welcome you first. TBB posters also seem to lack awareness when someone's being antagonistic because they hate them vs. joking, or at least not serious, antagonism.

I kinda forgot my point, but it's just a little funny that goons still get defensive or intimidated by the Lit crowd when it's arguably the most welcoming it's been.

Comic book fans are the most sensitive and defensive fan base there is. They need constant validation that their cape stories are art.

FWIW I still think that comic book discussion is technically fine for this forum as long as we're talking about actual books, not magazines -- if it's printed in a trade then I'm at least conceptually fine with it being discussed here, a comic book *might* have literary / artistic merit and be worth discussing. After all, it says "book" right there in the name.

That said BSS is the more appropriate forum for such so if someone's talking about a comic book here there would need to be a reason not to move the thread over there.
