I think it's less "is Ian Fleming racist" (he probably was though) and more "The character Felix Leiter is racist", which matches up with him being American.

Oh, I know Ian Fleming was racist. But wondering if an author is racist because one of the characters they created is racist is kind of a dumb way to get to it (by that reasoning every author that writes about police brutality based on racism is a racist because the characters they write about are racist, it's bad logic).

Countries unquestionably more racist than the US: Israel, China, Japan, the Koreas, most of Eastern Europe, Rwanda, most of the Arab world, South Africa, etc.

making GBS threads on black people is kind of a universal thing (including in Africa if you're the wrong kind of black person), you really need to see how other races are treated for a fair racism comparison, and how likely you are to get chopped up by a machete instead of called a mean word or have accurate crime statistics published.

despite the fact white people both do and sell more crack than black people, 99.7 percent of crack convictions were of black offenders.

despite the fact that poor white youths commit crime at four times the rate of affluent black youths, affluent black youths are convicted of crime at three times the rate of poor white youths.

despite the fact white people commit the majority of drug crime, 80 percent of drug convictions are against black or latino offenders.

and it's not just the prison system. a black family making 100k is more likely than not living among white families that make 30k.

I know that feeling, though I haven't put nearly as much hours into Civ myself. Playing the vidya didn't help me out on my own game, but there's stuff that pops up from time to time that I get because of it. For example, I only know who Jack Reed is because of Kaiserreich.

Also, that whole internet slang category I had. "What is a troll?" indeed.

Speaking of which:

Number Ten Cocks posted:

Yes, East Asian people are racist as gently caress (my family's go to way to refer to black people was "huk gwai", the Cantonese slur meaning black ghost/demon, though we kinda chilled on that a lot after my cousin married a black guy, but she still had to wait until her mom, who was super against the marriage, died of cancer before they made it official. My grandfather was ok with it though, he had been to all sorta of family gatherings before hand where he could get a feel for him) and possibly to a greater extent than western societies, but that doesn't excuse the systemic racism that's also blatantly present here in the US as well. Or did the racially motivated shootings we've had involving police in the past couple of years and them getting away with no charges or convictions just pass you by?

Anyway, back to this recent Jeopardy episode, I had no idea on Final, and neither did any of the contestants. Shame.

Also, wonder why the judges allowed the champ's answer of Saint Petersburg? I assume the article in question was written about Moscow, and the two cities aren't interchangeable, though they were both capitals of Russia at different times. Maybe they felt that the clue was misleadingly written? I dunno.

The wording of the question implied it was a capital in the 19th century, which at the time would have been Saint Petersburg and not Moscow, so they may have permitted it based on that, but I suppose it's also possible the same author also wrote an article on Saint Petersburg.

e: for whatever it's worth I also guessed Saint Petersburg based on the same read of the question

And this one didn't really matter in the end.

Before and after the score change, he was still in first place going into final and didn't have a runaway. So it shouldn't change the wagering strategy

Makes sense, I guess. Ambiguous clue writing strikes again.

I went with Moscow myself, but I could see why one could think Saint Petersburg was correct based off of the way the clue was written.

Whatever, I guess it didn't really matter in the end anyway.

Scores are

$10,400
$10,000
$7,800

Shadi 7800 and she selects the last clue, which is the daily double. Now the proper thing to do here is wager enough to ensure you will be in first place going into final. A good wager would be 2601 or more. And she wagered 2000 -_-

what the heck. she's not using the best strategy!
