The difference is that Rimmer was the worst Rimmer out of all the Rimmers in the multiverse. We'd be enormously fortunate if that was the case with Seymour.

Been on the dole at any time in the last 18 years? You've been ripped off:

http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/72095513/underpaid-benefits-could-cost-government-millions

quote:

Work and Income was meant to pay a beneficiary from the day after the two week period ended, but instead had been starting payments the following day, RNZ reported.

It's okay though, National have tried to sneak in a retrospective amendment to correct the "error", and Anne Tolley says that a day's benefit for a beneficiary is not a significant amount.

Beneficiaries are apparently a massive drain on the hard working kiwi taxpayer, while at the same time thousands of days worth of unpaid benefits are 'not huge amount of money' according to Tolley.

This story was prominent on RNZ this morning but I really had to struggle to find any reference to it on Stuff or NZH today; :tinfoil:

Can we sue, or what? I think I'm out at least $100, not including interest. Thank god I never had to consider payday loans.

Let's take each day out of her pay until it's paid back, then. Since money isn't a big deal.

It's also great how often National has made retroactive law changes to get out of stuff. It's only illegal if you get caught, then you change the law to make it legal when you did it!

Oh my sweet summer child. This was simply the easiest way of making the problem go away. After all, who is going to make a fuss about scrounging beneficiaries not getting their government handouts?

Because nobody gives a gently caress. Revolutions and government overthrows don't happen when most people are able to go to work and spend their money on iphones without being shot or beaten or oppressed.

I think of political systems as being subject to evolutionary pressures similar to biological organisms. The pressure of public discontent ensures that only the governments most effective at maintaining their grip on power can succeed. We've long since discarded dictatorial monarchy and despotism and such because they just aren't very good at keeping people looking at the ground. Modern western democracy is the latest form to evolve from ten thousand-odd years of selective pressure and it's mechanisms for keeping people are extremely sophisticated.

Bad politicians no longer result in the overthrow and downfall of the system; instead they're discarded after a couple of years and another is elected, like shark's teeth. This makes no difference in reality, of course, but it alleviates some of the upward pressure from the seething masses of citizenry. This helps perpetuate the system as a whole because it convinces people that the system works and that governments act in their best interest or they get voted out of power. Policies are enacted using the most abstruse and publically low-profile ways so as to avoid raising the ire of the citizenry, and when they do come to light, are blithely hand-waved away or smokescreened by retarded 'debate' with easily-led morons drowning out any real discourse. This works because the structure of democracy and first world economies, as well as the safety valve of freedom of speech/expression, cultivate an attitude of indifference to poo poo that actually matters. Most people with half a brain can't be bothered voting because their vote won't make a difference; all the fuckwits with nothing better to do tend to vote religiously. This sets up a feedback loop wherein politics becomes more and more of a joke to any sane person, which discourages voting even further because each election presents fewer and fewer not-terrible alternatives as parties scramble for the fuckwit votes. Bureaucracy becomes so bloated, and legislation so labyrinthine, that attempting to modify or dismantle the system using it's own rules becomes effectively impossible and not worth bothering with.

Yes something is bad and people will shout about it on twitter but nobody feels incentivised to do anything because doing things is what people who don't have jobs and lives and iphones and pets and finance payments have time for.

Fonterra should try farming people. They build their own fence, insist that it be electrified (for our own safety!) and make no effort to escape when it breaks because they built that fence and theirs is the best drat paddock in the world.

Because it's rich people changing the rules for when they gently caress with poor people, or dirty foreigners.

Just accept it and move on friend, because it's never ever going to change, even if you brutally murder all of them the power structure will come back eventually until this planet is scorched off the face of the universe by our baleful sun. Hail satan.
