I am very sad to hear about Takayasu's withdrawal, but I appreciate his decision to ensure he has a healthy body for the future.

I thought for a moment that I would select Gonoyama as my replacement for the team, but realized I should be true to my brand of sumo, even if it may curse both of us. It is the only way.

I'd like to trade Ura for Takayasu.

There's a lot of great lessons a prospect can learn by following Kisenosato's example. Injury management is not one of them.

It was pretty fun, it's not strictly like Grand Sumo, as in there's some showboating and a good chunk of the competitors had trunks under the mawashi, but otherwise they kept the general rules the same.

Day 4 Trades:

Atamifuji and now Ura are full up. Trades have been processed as such:

Saturnine Aberrance - Ura
Greekonomics - Tobizaru
bartolimu - No Trade
ratmosphere - Onosho
Teddybear - Ura
Communist Thoughts - Daieisho
Helianthus Annuus - Ura
Tiny Bug Child - Gonoyama

Of the folks who requested a trade, Greekonomics is the odd person out as Atamifuji was full up and they gave no alternatives. As such, it went down the initial draft order to Tobizaru. ratmosphere and Communist Thoughts did not submit a preference and were auto-traded as normal. Everyone else got a wrestler they requested.

Sorry for not posting this earlier in the day. My work schedule should be closer to normal and I'll be posting trades etc before 7am EDT.

Speaking of, is 40 the unofficial cutoff in sumo like it is in most sports?

Most retire well before that. There's still, like, Satonofuji and Moriurara going, though, and Tamawashi turns 40 sometime soon

Sorry I'm late
The whole structure of sumo runs against the "old guy who used to be good/great but can't really keep up anymore" archetype. There aren't the bench and part time roles that a player in team sport would have to linger around. A lot of guys wouldn't want to fall back into/stay around in the unsalaried ranks if they have any other prospects.

Adding to what others have said, Hanakaze retired in 2022 at the age of 51 with a record-breaking 214 honbasho under his mawashi. This is particularly wild given that the mandatory retirement age for elders is 65. He was the last-ever rikishi of the Shōwa era to go intai, but because he never made it to sekiwake he was ineligible for retirement benefits. Nobody needs a union like sumo wrestlers, frankly.

In any case, the reason almost nobody makes it to 40 isn't because of an unofficial rule so much as the harsh reality that getting smashed in the face almost every day of your life isn't very sustainable.

i drafted poorly with kirishima, but i will do my best to remain positive and cheer him on to (hopefully) more wins. i wont trade as long as he keeps competing, but i sincerely wish for him to snap out of it!

for no reason in particular, there's nothing in the rules about a mega demotion for drafting a kadoban ozeki who ultimately gets demoted, right? :ohdear:

for the sake of place on the banzuke, its a good thing that this month's sumo fantasy is extra fantastic :D
