Okumura's Palace definitely went on too long in vanilla, my first run at P5 died at the Casino and I think fatigue from the Spaceport was a significant part of that.

I did like the airlock puzzles though, I hope those stayed in Royal and the keycard bit I barely remember was cut.

There are definitely airlock puzzles including a new optional one. The keycard was both made a lot shorter and thematically improved; the minion robots rat out their bosses, telling you their bosses weaknesses. On the other hand the Okumura boss fight is now the worst.

The Okamura fight would have been OK if there were actually other fights in the game which required you to really lean hard into the baton pass mechanics but there aren't so it comes out of left field

So I've started to finish my first few social links in P5R and I got a good laugh when one night, I was like "Hey Kawakami, can you make some curry please thanks." "Hey Takemi, come over here and please conduct a special physical examination for me right here at the cafe." "Thanks for waiting through all that, and thanks for the curry, Kawakami."

A note on pacing. If you're designing a game and have a section where the player loses control of the character because you're spending that time in forced actions helping someone, a section where the player loses control of the character because you're on holiday, and a section where the player loses control because one of the friends has run off and the protagonist is depressed please don't put them back to back. That section's a slog.

There's this part I remember of all the Persona games and it's always the opening third. After that it feels like the middle episodes of a slow tv series before finally spiking on the final ep. It doesn't suck and I'm still entertained but filler bleeds together without any particular highlights and it's hard to remember anything in the middle until this thread brings it up.

I think P5R has a better success rate than that; I'd say that the rollercoaster starts with the aftermath to the Spaceport. That's almost the entire second half of the game, and the pyramid also has a decent twist because it doesn't work like any of the others. And the first and second palaces don't need huge twists because the simple existence of the first one is itself a twist, and the second is your first non-tutorial one so sets the baseline before things get really interesting. But I'd cut one of three and five and scavenge some of the plot points and teammate to make the other one and palace four denser, and three is the obvious choice to cut. (Have Makoto blackmailed by Medjed rather than Kaneshiro and not a lot changes while Medjed are actually established as bad guys not an entirely offscreen threat)

I did like in P5 compared to P4 the P5 cast didn't act like the MC moving away would mean a complete cessation of any and all communication, never to be spoken of again. Like it feels Joker probably moves in with his LI after his senior year at [ERROR: LOCATION NOT FOUND] high school.

It's also a lot better in Royal where everybody else also has stuff going on and some are even also moving away, vs vanilla or P4 where the protagonist is the only person moving on.

Oops you're right, probably just didn't notice because in vanilla you could beeline straight through the vault in a minute because all the PIN terminals were outside the side rooms.

New Personas need to be like the newer Fire Emblems where you spend most of your time trying to make particular pairs of party members smooch while plot and combat incidentally happens in the background instead of this lame poo poo where only the player character gets to smooch people

I really do wish more games would implement shipping as a game mechanic.

If I can't kiss Kanji then at LEAST let someone else kiss him.

The dialogue later with Teddie going to kiss you and you can respond "Lay it on me!" and then Dojima walks in like "what the gently caress are you two doing" is one of P4G's genuinely intentionally funny moments.
