My favourite part of the current changes is the core temperature regulator and capital core temperature regulator. Every new cap will need one, but as of right now, they are eye-wateringly expensive to build - the baseline cost of a core temperature regulator is 15m isk, and you need 250 of them to make one capital core temperature regulator, plus you need 300 p4s at 1.5m a pop. So as of right now, a single component needed in every single capital ship is, based on the 1DQ market, 4.3bn ISK. And this before you factor in all of the rest of the materials you need to build one. Oh, and a titan needs *forty* of them, so you're nearly 180bn ISK out of pocket before you've even started assembling one

But we're talking about :ccp: who need to make super complicated mechanics to complete one simple action, out of recycled old systems written up in spaghettified Python legacy code. With no notes. So tangled up not even Python engineers could decipher what the hell they were doing in 2002.

Simply resetting the original mining/manufacturing process isn't brave enough.

Or the senior staff are too distracted drooling over NFT's and crypto and just wave their hands dismissively "yeah yeah fine do that".

I'm sure CCP will hire an exobiologist to tell us all it makes perfect sense (with graphs) instead of admitting it's dumb.

This sounds like a way more fun Eve update, let me lay mines in enemy moons, belts and anomalies, offensive Kessler Syndrome other regions planets and their PI goes up in smoke. Shoot all their asteroids to bits turning them into a cloud of micro fragments that ruin communications

They're planning to cut the P4s required on all the cap components by a half, though they aren't really the bottleneck - oh look, the number of Organic Mortar Applicators I need to produce a Capital Armor Plate has been reduced from 10 to 5, that's helpful! It's the other PI, moon materials & gas in all of the other components which are the issue

the fuckups ccp makes are at the design point, not at their inability to code.

there are a massive amounts of jokingly easy things they could change (many by simply reverting or not pushing through current intended changes) that could make the game so much better

I got all my info from the Quasar Dev Blog and a technical podcast linked from the dev blog. It looks like they moved on from their original network implementation to using Erlang as a message passing system, though good Erlang engineers are definitely not easy to hire either.

As for SQL, it's not the data model necessarily, but the fact that a single SQL server runs the entire cluster and as such is a SPOF, and its latency will effect everything that depends on it.

CCP Dev posted:

Nick: So, EVE Online was basically built originally with database engineers and network hardware specialists.

So they had Cat 5 and a bucket of SQL, and that's basically how they made the game.

[snip]

But we're getting to the point now where we can provide the developers with the same routing mechanisms that the server was able to do, except for now, it's Erlang doing it, and we don't have to worry about Python going, "You get a packet. You get a packet. You get a packet."

Liz: So it's death to the old Browning layer, essentially.

Nick: Ultimately.

So the original design of the home brew network is a guaranteed one hot mesh network, which, quadratic problems are fun.

And that was the first ceiling that we saw when we started looking at this problem.

We're like, "Oh boy. I understand what the company wants to do and try to get more people concurrency those kinds of things, but guys, there's a very low ceiling to that, that we need to deal with very quickly."

And that's kind of what kick started all of this, when multiple people in the company were doing napkin math and going, "Ah, guys. This doesn't work out."

Ajaxify

"Cat 5 and bucket of SQL" is a pretty accurate description of the game then and now. They've been unable to progress past this in anything they've done so far in game.

I'm not sure that's really fair. Fights can have far higher player counts than a few years ago, and they haven't done it on the back of faster hardware. That's not to say that many parts of the engine probably need real re-writes, of course.
