My favourite part of the current changes is the core temperature regulator and capital core temperature regulator. Every new cap will need one, but as of right now, they are eye-wateringly expensive to build - the baseline cost of a core temperature regulator is 15m isk, and you need 250 of them to make one capital core temperature regulator, plus you need 300 p4s at 1.5m a pop. So as of right now, a single component needed in every single capital ship is, based on the 1DQ market, 4.3bn ISK. And this before you factor in all of the rest of the materials you need to build one. Oh, and a titan needs *forty* of them, so you're nearly 180bn ISK out of pocket before you've even started assembling one

It looks like they moved on from their original network implementation to using Erlang as a message passing system, though good Erlang engineers are definitely not easy to hire either. As for SQL, it's not the data model necessarily, but the fact that a single SQL server runs the entire cluster and as such is a SPOF, and its latency will effect everything that depends on it. I'm not sure that's really fair. Fights can have far higher player counts than a few years ago, and they haven't done it on the back of faster hardware. That's not to say that many parts of the engine probably need real re-writes, of course.
