It's not "fat awkward guys are gross lol." It's "thirty-four year old guys who target college students fourteen years their junior are gross and this is the story of a college girl who gets targeted by one." This sort of guy wants a power imbalance between him and his partner, and is trying to get it by being older and more experienced. God, the sex scene which is basically him acting out porn cliches, because he's not interested in her as a person. He's not interested in what she enjoys. He's interested in her as a prop for his fantasy, and that's what make him creepy, not his looks. Her being sexually experienced drives a stake into his fantasy of being the experienced older man, and because he is a creep, he blames her for his disappointment. It's a great story. Kind of skin-crawling in its realness.

Read the interview alongside the story. There is more to it than just the age and power imbalance. Definitely a part of it but the author did intend to have the reader somewhat sympathize with Robert, until the end where he cements his rear end in a top hat self.

Be a fifty year-old banging willing college kids every night, but don't be that.

My theory is that anyone with "proud" as part of their core identity is probably a Dingus. It's an untested theory but I think it'll hold up to scientific rigor.

There was also something off about the guy in that story, and I can't put my finger on it- in some parts he almost seemed like he was taking cues from some MRA handbook; he'd feign interest then withdraw, compliment her then insult her. Some things he was very specific about (taste in movies) while others he was pretty vague "I live in a house." What I found the most depressing about the story was that it seemed like the most excitement the younger woman got from the whole thing was the fantasy of being desired. It was constantly contrasted with how revolting she found the guy. For the guys that got all defensive about the story, I really gotta wonder if they were in her shoes and were talking with a woman they didn't really find all that physically attractive, but liked that she made them feel smart, would they have sex with her? would they put aside the flaws in her physical appearance and mannerisms and sort of just immerse themselves in the fantasy of how they hoped the date played out?

grittyreboot posted:Is this what they call a hot take? quote:Another popular Internet response has been, “It’s unfortunate that society makes it so that Margot felt she couldn’t call it off at the last minute.” But that’s missing the point too, because things had gone badly astray long before that. When you first got in Robert’s car, you wondered if he was going to rape and murder you. By that standard, something like 80% of dates have gone bad before they've even started. drat. The amount of "missing the point" around this story is really something.

Yeah, I've been there. Ended up having a thing with someone I wasn't attracted to because she was the only one giving me any attention shortly after a breakup. It ended after 6 days.

Post This, Dirtbag! echoes through the rock quarry that we're standing in now and with a ear splitting whine the sword begins emitting a powerful laser beam from its tip, shooting through the top of his skull. light leaks out of his eyes, nose, and mouth, like strapping a skull to a fog machine but neon pink laser light. he starts to smoke and them a moment later kablooey he blows up in a shower of gibs like when the dudes head explodes in scanners.
