idk, basically have no ties to where I'm at, would like to move, looking for cities that would be a good fit. I'm a software dev.

things I care about:
- feasible to possibly buy a house in this place in the future
- smaller cities preferred, or somewhere I can live that's not smack in the middle of downtown
- internet infrastructure
- cheaper is better
- a snow season to ski/snowboard in
- air quality, nice outdoors

things I don't care about:
- bike/walkability. I don't mind driving everywhere
- nightlife/bars/club scene
- having tons of people around
- how "cool" the place is

places that seemed to be good fits that I've looked at:
- Golden, Fort Collins, and Denver, CO
- Provo, Salt-Lake City, UT

I just don't really know anything about west coast/mid-western places so any input is appreciated.

I guess it depends on why you think of as affordable. I am in Denver, I can't imagine buying a house here. It is way cheaper to rent. Most single family homes (in OK parts of town) are going to run you $600K+. Getting to skiing from Denver is a total pain in the rear end. Air quality is OK, terrible this year based on the fires. That said it is an awesome place to live.

SLC has great skiing access but terrible Air Quality in the winter.

I would probably consider Boise, Bozeman, Missoula, Spokane, Bend (although that is getting expensive). If skiing is real important and you plan to work remote I would go for a ski town. It is expensive and housing can be a pain but it would be cool.

I would generally say there is no real difference between Denver/Fort Collins/Golden.

I never go up to FC (really no reason) but I live basically in downtown Denver and I am in golden all the time. It is 18 min by car. We rode mountain bikes all summer Tues/Thurs at 5:30 am in Golden. Golden is different than Denver but ultimately it is a suburb at this point. You are just a bit closer to being outside on the trails though.

checking or savings? online HYSA is best for savings but there may be some value in a local branch for checking if you need to handle cash.

Fair debt collection notice them. There is a template on the governments website. You probably want to walk it into a branch if it's local in addition to mailing it.

If you can record the phone call (speakerphone to a second cell phone? Computer?) follow your states laws and record the call. I would tell them when you pick up "this call is being recorded" and then tell them he cannot be reached at this number. Further calls will be considered harassment. Do not call me again. Please confirm you understand. If they hang up note the date and time. If they call again sue them in small claims court. I think the base penalty is a grand?

Be calm, be firm, be methodical. They are the ones harassing you and you don't have a contract with them so there is nothing they can hold over you.

Its been a hot minute since I've really needed to be aware of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) but they shouldn't be hitting you up that frequently. Take a look at this and google around for a little more info, https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/debt-collection-faqs
Ask them to stop calling if you haven't already, and then send them a letter requesting the same thing via certified mail with proof of delivery.
Or you could just block their phone number I guess.

Yup. Hopefully they open with a notice that you're being recorded, and countering with your same notice should put them on their toes. If they refuse consent refuse right back to them. This is wiretap law and it's taken very seriously.

Which state are you in?

If you wind up in small claims the odds of them no showing are very high. It's cheaper to just pay your settlement.

Basically any place with a nice natural environment and a good tech job market has seen tech money drive local housing prices and cost of living to crazy levels.

If you really don't mind driving everywhere and long commutes, you might think about living well east of Seattle (say, in North Bend) and working at Microsoft's main campus. No matter how much it might seem like a good idea, though, don't do this with any job west of Redmond.

Ok. Two party. "This call is being recorded, do you consent?" Do not say anything else. If they say no stop recording. Start taking notes. Ask if they are attempting to collect a debt. If they say no note that and you might have a small claims suit on their hands, ask who you're talking to, name of company, and say "Add me to your do not call list." If they say yes say that person cannot be reached at this number, not to call you again, and further communication will be considered harassment. Pray they call you again, because they start racking up $1000/call in fines. Take notes, file a small claims suit.

Finally did this, I love their weasel words. "If I pay this in full, you will not report it to my credit report as any kind of derogatory mark, you will remove any derogatory remarks you have placed, or it will not show up at all correct?" "Sir it has not been posted to the credit report." "That's great news, so if I pay in full..." "Sir why would we report it to your credit report if you paid it?" "I don't know that's why I'm asking, please confirm that...." "Yes."

gently caress Off. Remember if you ever play this game, be explicit, and only accept "yes" or "no" as your answers. They could have trivially (and still might because laws don't matter) report this as "in collections, settled" on my report based on the rep's initial statements. Hence why I suggest people record their calls to debt collectors, and if you or they are in a 2-party state make sure you get explicit confirmation they consent to recording.

Oh and then the rep said it would cost $5 to pay by credit card over the phone, a thing their printed payment slip does not mention. She offered to allow me to pay by check over the phone, gently caress that, then said I could pay on their payment portal online with a credit card for free.

Hey guys, what can you tell me about ESOPs? Is there a thread where I can get the lowdown? There's a company interested in me and I'd probably have to take a pay cut (don't know how much) but I'd get partial ownership in the company and I don't know if it's a worthwhile tradeoff or not. The headhunter of course makes it sound like it would be (she doesn't know how much I make, but their offer sounds like it'll be lower and she knows that much).

The answer is "it depends on the company and the plan." Without details all we can discuss are generalities. A typical good ESOP would have something like a 6-month period where you get to put in up to 15% of your salary. You "purchase" shares at the end of each period for the lower of the two stock prices: the beginning of the period or the end. Minus 15%. And you get to sell immediately if you choose.

You have an immediate tax burden of the 15% plus any gains made if the closing price of the period was higher than the opening price of the period.

Does that make up for lower pay? Probably not unless the company's stock is a rocket ship (and you can count on that continuing, which you can't) or the salary difference is only 2.25% lower at the new place (15% of 15%).

I read ESOP as option plan, vs what I have always seen what you described as ESPP. Again, what are the details?

Lay it out. What's your job title? How objectively senior are you? Is the company public? How much below market rate do they think they can get you for in exchange for this stock?

I've grown a bit weary of the "take a huge pay cut to get this great opportunity" line, most of the time it turns out your bosses definitely did not take that same paycut and got an order of magnitude more stock than you.

Yeah I don't know the specifics yet, I'm still working on that. I don't know anything about ESOPs though and at least what an idea as to what questions I need to ask.

I'm a senior engineer and have been with my company for eight years. There are no raises anymore, other than 2% yearly (if we're lucky). Management is awful. They reluctantly agreed to let us work from home (though the CEO and President both states that if anybody can work from home, they should). One of the managers called me a "sissy" today for working from home. So far this year two of our production employees were injured on the job, both being permanently paralyzed in separate incidents. I will be surprised if the company is around in five years.

The problem is, my boss isn't stupid, and pays me more so I don't go anywhere. I've been half-assedly looking for awhile and almost everywhere local is hiring a little below what I make, and everywhere not-local I've applies hasn't shown interest. I'm at a little over 90k and it seems around here engineers make around 50-60k and up to 75-80k is what most places want to start somebody with experience at.

Automotive and midwest. low cost of living but generally low quality of, uh, "engineering." Basically RV stuff.

edit: it's pretty similar with the local non-RV stuff too though. I worked at a tier 1 and made 60kish and I understand that was middle of the road there. My wife works at a lot of local plastic companies and they sound about the same. I've looked into becoming a test engineer and they're a little lower.

I probably have a real shot at becoming a manager, but I don't know if this is the place to do it. That would be the next big increase though, it would push me over 100k.

If the next step is manager then you are right in the Senior Engineer band and you should definitely be able to grab $90K at a T1. If you want to become a manager at any point, you should become a manager. Then you can apply for manager jobs with manager experience at other companies. Otherwise, you will be working your way up from an IC type role at another firm after you move and you will delay your advancement.

Yeah that's kind of where I'm at... put up with things here and see if I can grab a title and get some management experience. I'd like to think that, as a manager that theoretically would give a poo poo, I'd do a hell of a lot better than our current crop but who knows, I might hate it and/or be awful at it. I'm willing to give it a shot though.

In the meantime, though, I always like to see what my worth is and if I'd be happier somewhere else. And maybe seeing what one of these ESOPs is all about (I know nothing about them but as a leftist I kind of like the idea of owning the means of production :v: )

Yeah thankfully that wasn't from my boss, but I know he has the same sentiments. He still thinks it's all a hoax and Trump won the election and has gone off on political tirades several times. I think, though, that it's all a coverup because he doesn't know how to work remotely. He's been trying to figure out Teams for a month now.

The manager that that did come from has nothing but failed projects under his belt, yet they keep giving him new ones. I swear he has dirt on the CEO or something because at any other company he'd have been fired years ago.
