Also don't understimate the power of the individuals involved - Germaine Greer basically defined feminism (or at the very least was it's most prominent figure in the media) in the UK from the 1960s to the 1980s, almost by accident. That she has gone TERF, very loudly, holds an awful lot of sway with even non-radical feminists.
