Does anyone do the "Teach English to Chinese kids" option? I've got an interview tomorrow on this, so wanted to see what people thought of it/the experience. Seems to pay decent though I know the hours can be a little odd.

Depends on the program really, from what I've heard the real gravy train left on that but there's still some viable markets and you can still make decent money. I'm pretty sure there's an ESL teaching thread.

It was really awesome a couple years ago but the market's pretty saturated at this point and the entry level pay is, predictably, freefalling. The three people I know who do this all really love it, though.

I dunno, there are still places regularly hiring on LA CL that's aren't the 30 cents an hour shops. I'm sure it'll be dead in a few years once the production companies realize they can use a computer, but maybe some are willing to pay for having a perfect transcript with all the production conversation left off and everything laid out clearly--which a computer probably won't do that well without human editors. I know if I was a producer I'd want something that I can just sit down and skim through and sent to the editors and not see a bunch of bad computer translations or other nonsense added in. I bet some of them hate having to use DT for stuff.

Yeah, there's a lot of transcription out there that will go away, but there's always going to be a market for stuff computers can't do well. I mean, there's tons of places like Rev around right now and Rev even offers automatic transcription at a pittance, but people still kick out for the good shops because they don't want to deal with a garbage result. I imagine the next big shift will be places doing automatic transcription and hiring humans to clean it up, format, timecode, et cetera.

As in, I've heard that you don't even need inventory, which makes me wonder how the hell that's supposed to work. Are there producers or distributors that have merchandise ready to be sold by someone with a Shopify storefront?

They are an ecommerce front end but also have basically an app store, and while I've not tried it personally there are drop shipping add ons. Like you pick products to "sell" and on the back end it's really drop shipping from banggood or whatever. Haven't tried it but you really need to blog/review/etc to push that stuff because no one will just order from you instead of wherever else just because you're there. It works but it's not easy money, more like a trickle of nickels. You don't need physical inventory, but you will still need to sell (as well as pay the fees)

Yeah, there is a thing called drop shipping. But the drop shippers don't charge much less than what you can sell it for. But what are you planning on selling? You need to find a niche that no one or few are selling to make any money. Think AS SEEN ON TV things, little doodads, invent something, etc. When sites like Wayfair, Amazon, Ebay sell everything under the sun on razor thin margins you gotta find something really specific to sell if you wanna make money. There is an old archived thread from 2013 about a guy that sold mini-stills. It has lots of good information in it. It's closed but I've had it favorited for years in case I ever think of a good niche, which I still haven't. https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3564355 EDIT: Finally god darn it finished this god darn file god darn it. unbuttonedclone fucked around with this message at 14:55 on Jun 7, 2018 |

Hey, I sort of got half-911ed. Me: "Hey, look, I can deal because I've been doing this forever, but I just want you to know it's not cool to send this kind of file out without giving the transcriber a heads up." Client: "What? I thought we put a note in there about the audio quality. Sorry about that, just do your best." Me: "No, I'm not talking about the audio quality, I'm talking about the fact that this is an interview for a trial, and the trial's about sexual abuse of a minor." Client: "...oh, gently caress."

Basically, any time you get anything that has to do with a criminal case you've got to be prepared for something hosed up.

It means being given material to transcribe that might haunt your nightmares for the rest of your life, which (outside the world of legal transcription) most commonly occurs with 911 calls. Assigning such material to a transcriptionist without warning them and giving them a chance to nope out of it is extremely Not Cool.

This time it was at least the customer. The customer gave them a heads up about lovely audio quality but not the content, and the interview took a while to get to the hosed up part so they didn't catch it while checking out the file. I only stumbled across it because I try to skim everything before I accept it so I'm not surprised if the tape goes to poo poo halfway through, and one of the bits I landed on was the kid talking about what the other person had done to them. I like this client and they're generally pretty good so I don't hold it against them, but I let them know that if I hadn't already developed the transcriber equivalent of the thousand-yard-stare I might not have taken this one so well. (Of course now they know I won't turn my nose up at hosed up stuff so I imagine I'll see more of this kind of thing. Ah well.)

If a file's sound quality is bad enough where you're thinking of that you should say something to whoever assigned it and get yourself more time to work on it or a different file to work on. You can try out sound editing software like ocen audio. I know that one's free. I've been doing this forever, and I honestly haven't opened a sound editing program in years. I've found it's much more helpful to have a pair of headphones that isn't heavy on the base. Sometimes poo poo's just badly recorded and no amount of wizardry can un-gently caress it. vvv yes 1000x! ohnobugs fucked around with this message at 09:19 on Jun 9, 2018 |

Fortunately they didn't go into a lot of detail. (Unfortunately that was because the kid was too young.) All I can say is that I've got a new respect for the social workers who have to conduct these interviews, because she was absolutely chipper the entire time and treated it like it was just some game that had been played. I figure I can't nailgun this guy's dick to a wall, but maybe the transcript will help the prosecutor do just that in a metaphorical sense. I'm so glad my next tape was a reality show producer asking an actual marine biologist whether the megalodon really could be living in the Marianas Trench. Her sarcasm and absolute refusal to buy into the nonsense was refreshing.

Most stuff they’ve given me this week has been .80 a minute or better. Some easy researcher stuff, some challenging audio nat geo (but paid okay for DT and lots of dead air) and a documentary with interesting subject matter. They also had some basic Food network stuff floating around. Worth getting in on the feast of you need some cash.
