Plus, isn't that exactly the kind of thing that cops are always the ones to advocate? The whole revival of the American left thing means the old-school ones have to be looked at with some suspicion since it seems like a shitload of old tankies/Stalinists were in it more out of contrarianism than actual vision and ideals, and as a result tend to be cliquey and joyless.

They started coming to prominence as the British National Party splintered and broke up in the mid-naughties. The BNP had had a limited amount of electoral success (including, to my eternal shame, their first local councillor being in my ward, although he got voted out at the earliest opportunity) but particularly as UKIP, which didn't have the far-right baggage (or rather did but was fronted by comfortable middle-class shires types) took votes from them, the tensions that had riven the party since it split from the street-fighting National Front in the eighties finally blew it apart. The NF took a lot of its foot soldiers from the big hooligan firms of the seventies and eighties, mostly from London, Liverpool and Manchester (many of those clubs often had strong anti-racist presences too). However the massive gentrification of football through the 90s had mostly cut these groups off at the knees. Hooliganism did remain at a lot of provincial clubs, particularly those who'd been left behind by the gentrification (in particular Leeds, last winner of the old Championship before it became the Premiership, before imploding under financial mismanagement and now finding themselves easily the best-supported club in the lower leagues). This led to a nascent political movement around lower-league football (that itself was not racist and mostly about the ridiculous increases in ticket prices and the growing commodification of football supporters) put fans from across the country in touch with each other and allowed them to organise, leading to good groups like Fans United and Kick Out Racism - but also put a lot of these hooligans in touch, many of whom found they had far more in common with the people they used to fight than they did with the supporters now surrounding them in the new post-Taylor grounds. As the century drew to an end clubs began to crack down on this remaining fringe, banning them from grounds, and particularly under New Labour, ASBOs and Football Banning Orders (both quasi-judicial overreaches of the type so beloved by Blairite Home Secretaries, which have pretty massive constitutional problems but they're always used against Those Sort Of People so nobody cared) really began to bite. A lot of these hooligans were, for want of a better term, radicalised by this process. If you're living somewhere lovely like Luton or Leeds then your attachment to your club can often be the only time in your life you feel actually part of something bigger than yourself (which was one of the big drivers of hooliganism as the economy imploded in the seventies and eighties). That these towns were hurt the most by deindustrialisation - just at the same time as they began to receive substantial Muslim populations - the slide to Islamophobic racism was probably inevitable. The EDL remain surprisingly "pure" because of the strange wrinkle that the London, Liverpool and Manchester racist fans, who were first to be kicked out, found themselves involved with Combat 18 and other "trad" far-right groups. The lingering tension between these groups and the provincial EDL means that they've never really been captured into the general millieu of the far-right, which is probably for the best because they're way, way more numerous (and much more inclined to straight-up street violence) than the other groups. They're also far more nihilistic and anti-police than the other groups, which is again a blessing as it means the Old Bill never hesitate to kettle them and throw them out the moment there's trouble, unlike the older NF who were often allowed to run riot.
