Whenever some customers with images in their signature post tickets to Jira Service Desk directly via email, all of their stupid images get attached to the ticket as files. Just use plaintext emails, nobody gives a toss about your logos either way.

One of the nicer things my head office IT has done recently, is completely disallowing images in our signatures. I wonder if someone did the math on just how much junk traffic they cause.

I've been asked to print out and put in a binder and keep updated a huge .xls I use several times a day to track efficiency and waste because our director of compliance's little stoolie 'couldn't confirm that it exists' I would have been happy to email it to him if he had asked for it, but he didn't say a word about needing to see it when we were inspected last week; he just went scurrying back and reported we weren't doing it.

The thing that some of the people I work with don't really understand about pre-sales is the 'pre' part. At the point you're handing me a signed order there's not much that can be done to ensure that the solution fits the requirements, but we all know that what you actually want is for someone else to own your mistakes and bodge together a work-around while you still get your commission.

VP was pleasant and chatty until SoO shows up, he walks in, doesn't even sit down and says 'thanks for all your hard work, but we've decided to take a different leadership direction and your time here is over. Ugh, I have an appointment in the afternoon with bossman and HR because I called in sick to much last year. They call it an employer care appointment, which seems ironic to me. As I know HR is usually not on my side I guess the best course of action is making use of the fact, that employers over here (Germany) are not allowed asking anything about sicknesses. I mean work is probably the main reason for my depression, but god help me, I won't admit that to HR.

Pissing me off: License Servers. Again. Always. Forever. We have 1 (one) Windows Server. It hosted two license servers. It's a 2008 R2 machine. We decided to retire it. Two license servers out of a dozen in total. Most of them are Flexnet and relatively well-behaved. These two are based on Sentinel. I moved the easy one first. Unplugged the USB dongles (three of them jfc) and plugged them into the new server, updated the GPO to point clients to the new server, and it worked. The next one is a clusterfuck. They added some additional vendor-specific garbage on top of Sentinel. There are currently licenses checked out that CANNOT EVER BE RETURNED because the people who supposedly use them a) are students who don't exist anymore and b) used PCs with ephemeral user profiles. And you can't deactivate the license while a seat is checked out or move the license information and state over to a new server. This license server also needs a dongle to function. So they combined the worst of all systems to create their garbage. The license manager application they wrote crashes trying to enumerate users. The license server crashes when I use wlmadmin.exe to try and enumerate the licenses. I HATE HATE HATE license servers and the ecosystem they exist in so much. Also, apparently they went to extreme lengths to obfuscate where the gently caress clients store their license server address. With the other program it's a documented registry setting, with this it's not even mentioned. I'm not really surprised, these are the people who think opening an mssql instance with hardcoded sa password to the world is a great idea. All users must have sysadmin permissions in mssql, because they use certain flags that DO NOTHING BUT REQUIRE THOSE PERMISSIONS. (Yes, that means this software in its default configuration opens a remote shell with SYSTEM rights on all computers)

Thanks Ants posted:I'd love to be able to have a way to put a number on lost time / $ globally due to license enforcement getting things wrong and taking services out. Speaking of licenses... So we've got these Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometer machines at work. Oodles of them from several vendors. They start at $150,000. Given that the software to run them is only useful if you plug a machine that costs six figures into the PC... why the gently caress do some vendors also require a USB licensing dongle for the software ? Isn't the machine that costs more than my annual salary not an effective license control mechanism ?

Nope, they did not move from away from Vista. Instead they apparently added support for USB dongles and told us we could buy new dongles to replace the parallel port ones.

Refinancing my house: “Agrikk, please provide W-2s for you and Mrs Agrikk for the last two years, copies of asset statements for two quarters, prior two paystubs and any 1099 income, mortgage statements for any assets and insurance documents for same. Feel free to reply to this email with image scans of these documents attached.” Um. No. I don’t be sending you these documents via email. “Why not?” Because email is notoriously insecure unless you want to swap PGP keys... “PG... wha?” Never mind. I’m not sending you these documents. Email is not secure. “Sure it is. We do it all the time with customers. You can put them in a zip file if it makes you feel better.” How do I get the password to you? “Password? No password. Just zip them up and send them over.” Don’t you have a secure document management portal to which I can upload these? “Yes, but it’s a hassle for us to us to use so we just ask customers to email us directly.” And on. And on. And on. Document people for mortgage companies are the worst. I ended up zipping the file with a password and upping it to my private S3 bucket and providing them a signed url that expires after four hours then emailing them the password in a blank email. What, are we in the 90’s all over again? This security issue has been solved, people.

Agrikk posted:What, are we in the 90’s all over again? This security issue has been solved, people. I bought my first house about two years ago and it was an eye opening experience. Had I not been an educated IT person I shudder to think what would've happened. I confirmed with my realtor that he had app based two-factor on his email, everything through my bank was done on their secure online portal, leaving just the title company. I tried working with them, forwarding the phishing emails to their "IT guy" but it went absolutely nowhere. They had all of my personal details, address, exact amount for escrow, etc. The cherry on top of that poo poo sundae was that the title company also somehow missed a maintenance lien on the house by the city since it had sat empty and no one shoveled the sidewalk. gently caress that company. I am doing Proofpoint Phishing tests. I like doing testing, writing the fake emails is fun. Two things pissing me off about it: 1.) I got sign-off on the campaign, by email, from the Director. Said Director also has access to the admin portal. Said Director has also asked me multiple times for easy to find info about the campaign, such as start and end dates (in the original plan he signed off), how many emails have been sent (in the portal, front and center), and what the landing page looks like (also on the admin panel). He also got upset with me for "not giving him enough time to give the C Suite a heads up" which I mean yeah, I guess 2 weeks of notice that I'm going to be starting something isn't enough time for you to send an email. For sure. Cool. 2.) Dingus the Director fell for a phish about building security. He emailed his toady for more information, toady fell for the email as well. We're now having a meeting to discuss the "New evacuation plan". There isn't a plan. If you click the link in the email you get a friendly page that says "You got phished!". Dingus knows this because he's asked about it (see #1). The email is from corp-internal.com, as are all phishing test emails. The sender is Bruce Banner. The email has a giant [EXTERNAL][BULK] tag on it. Urgh.
