That's because when you're in a big ole cluster of ships, whichever bomb is closest to a specific ship will change.

I don't know. Bombs usually come in a straight line or a slight arrow shape towards the fleet with a very definite "first" bomb.

Are we sure there isn't a little more math to this than just "closest bomb"?

I could be wrong, but this one just doesn't feel right.

I want CIWS battleships that can automatically brrrrrrrrt bombs/missiles and have a bonus to hitting fighters/drones with specialized turrets.

I want pocket dreads (battleships with 1 XL gun) and escort carriers.

I want drones to work like carrier fighters do and for Gallente drone boats to be BETTER at that than other racial drone boats - more effective or able to field more. Drone boats should be able to field as many drones as they can support with their bandwidth. Up to 10 light drones, 5 medium drones, and 3 heavy drones per flight. Make EWAR drones actually good.

It's supposed to be a random bomb within its range, not the nearest bomb.

Can a f2p non-whale contribute much to the fleet?

I have a lot of computer downtime while recuperating from a hospital stay, and don't really want to sub until I know if I have fun playing another MMO. I would like to be scouting or helping in little ships, but still be able to shitpost (my one true accomplishment in life). I downloaded the game like a decade ago on my old potato and ended up not being able to log in on my 28.8K connection at the time. I posted in the Eve thread a bit but never was able to keep connected long enough to create a character. I found it again on Steam last week, and apparently you get credit for time playing while you still haven't even created a single character, because I'd been waiting on the login-screen as I read the first 10 and last 12 pages of this thread (Steam says 61 hours/played and I don't even have a single toon yet!)

I don't need help figuring out how to join goons in space, but since it's the first time I will be dipping my toe in, are there any non-secretgoonwiki-but-goon-guides for a good start? I don't want to choose the "wrong" race or anything, and the free-to-view wiki starts off assuming you've at least made your first character already instead of shitposting (my one true accomplishment in life) at the 4 racial choices screen. Even just a link to a useful guide (goon stuff for Dungeons & Dragons Online guides were great, and entertaining to read as well as an example). I have oodles of time but can't jump on and be active for hours at a stretch, so scouting/exploring alone are usually what I do in other time-sink MMO roles. I can conversely log on for up to 6-8 hours consecutively for Eve "raid" type fleet stuff as long as I learn about it with a few hours/day of warning.

Is this where I salute and say mate and stuff? I'm sitting on the account management screen now, getting time-played credit before I even see past the character screen :smug:...

There are a few alpha ships that can be used in most fleets. You will be very limited in what you can do tho. There is always free t1 frigates or pretty nearly free t1 destroyers.

That's good to know! I don't mind subbing later if I have fun, but (from what I understand) the game is playable during the (steep?) learning curve without forcing you to pay out real money while getting used to the culture and slang. I'm happy to throw a game company some of my meager cash hoard for the game (even if it's just for socializingj-in-space). I just know that for over twenty years now I've enjoyed playing online with friendly people, and Eve lends itself (as I've read in the past and ITT) to all differing types of playstyles. If I enjoy the game to the point where I'm frustrated by mechanics standing in my way to future fun, I have no problem with a subscription model (EQ/WoW/DDO as examples).

Hey hospital buddy, if you're alright with wading into an unforgiving, rewarding, and emergent gameplay sandbox that just might reopen some of those stitches of yours, then definitely join up with a lively corp which the Imperium has in abundance. I've participated in many combat scenarios ranging from unprovoked 1v1 duels to days-long thousands of players battles and you'd think after your hundredth one the overarching spaceship shooting experience would get repetitive, like reflexively completing a raid knowing all the boss mechanics by heart, or starting a 1000th moba game with an encyclopedic knowledge of all the champ strengths and weaknesses. But because the human factor is so prevalent in Eve, from ship inception to its destruction, the chances of encountering something unexpected, both good and bad, is definitely what keeps me engaged.

Like just a few hours ago I got to join a fleet that was one of the most dynamic experiences I've had in a long while. We got into some destroyers, which is a step above the tiny frigate, and followed our fleet commander through the wormhole to the other side of the galaxy into the heart of hostile space. There oblivious to the nearby wormhole were some big expensive, but seemingly unprotected ships mining ore and we got the surprise drop on them. But these guys were quick to call in reinforcements and soon we had a few dozen massive carriers teleporting on top of us sending out flights of fighters the size of our own ships. A level-headed fleet commander would have disengaged from such odds and prioritized getting the fleet back safely to home space, but no - not our commander.

We assumed a fighting formation and started warping around among all the carriers picking off the least armored targets on the field, like the ships used to teleport them in. Our destroyers were just too agile for their capital fleet meant as a response to the much larger and slower cruisers and battleships, so next we even got the command to start shooting one of the carriers causing their entire fleet to warp off... Their first response fleet was then forced to call in a second fleet of smaller cruisers to try to get us out of their mining area, which we ended also up chasing through some jump gate to never be seen again. A nearby much scrappier third enemy fleet commander took it upon themselves to pull together their usual gang of assault frigates to try to direct us to the nearest wormhole, but their numbers were just not there and we played a bit of a cat and mouse with them before calling it back to Delve. But of course not before charging some fearsome NPCs guarding our egress that ended up one-shotting a good chunk of our fleet to the sounds of elation on comms.

So if you want to read up on some public info on which way is the ship's front before signing up for the 'slang or culture', you might visit Eve Uni and you also can do space battle or something more involved like industry in no time.

That's what all the slots are. The ship has a basic level of utility that you then customize.

Not exactly that kind of hospital...but I have permanent stitches from my corneal transplant in January! I just spent about 5 weeks inpatient due to meds bottoming out. I am always compliant, but when you've been on all the psyche meds for 2 decades, some stop working and some meds get weird synergy or cancelations. It's not the first time it's happened, but it can, and I go long periods with no bad effects. I'm also the primary caregiver of a 98 year-old in end-stage dementia and a 70 year-old mother beating cancer. Which is the main reason I can't always get away immediately for an hours-long fleet op or raid, and enjoy being able to be part of a group helping alone at odd times of day. I generally can get free time with a little warning beforehand.

Edit: I have the goonwiki already pulled up, and feel capable of not loving up the process, but I also hope to create a character later tonight and run through the "Opportunities" laid out in the open wiki. I seriously doubt CCP will go back and fix things they're already "done" with, they still haven't fixed COSMOS missions being so god drat newbie hostile, you cannot reattempt these missions if you fail them and it's a chain, if you fail one, you fail them all. Also repair drones, I wish repair drones could repair their host ship but that's illogical and thus not allowed, go buy a second account like everyone else.

They WANT you to have multiple accounts or whatever, which is also kind of newbie hostile in certain ways as well.

Also any ships having anykind of CIWS would counter their "small > medium > bigger ship" philosophy or whatever.
