The LACC is nowhere near big enough to host Comic-Con. LA sucks rear end anyway, and the eateries there outside of Little Tokyo are either poo poo or expensive. Las Vegas. That's the place for Comic-Con, baby. Booya.

Vegas is the place to host a con that you really don't want the focus to be on the con.

Have decided I'm not going to cosplay this year. The only day that won't be busy with lines, panels, and running around is Sunday, when I need to be packed up, and the costume (while awesome) is too impractical to wear for anything other than doing the "look at my costume" stroll. Plans are in the works for a different, more practical outfit next year.

Jack Skeleton posted:Vegas is the place to host a con that you really don't want the focus to be on the con. I wouldn't say that, but having surrounding activities of that quantity would definitely take some pressure off the con. When the hosting city is a vacation destination on its own, you don't feel compelled to spend every minute of the weekend at the convention itself. In terms of surroundings, I think I'd rank it Vegas > San Diego > Anaheim > LA. Obviously some would disagree, but keep in mind the space in the LVCC is so great that it could probably accommodate a lot more ticket sales. More people could go, so tickets wouldn't be as hard to get every year. I poked around Google a bit but couldn't find how big the largest room is in there though, so I cant really say whether or not the Hall H-esque panels would be able to accommodate more people. It wouldn't surprise me, though. My only legitimate gripe with Las Vegas would be the weather. San Diego is always pretty nice out, with the marina being nice and cool. I'd definitely miss that, since I definitely spend a not-insignificant amount of time outside walking. Though last year there was this weird hot rain that happened for like 3 minutes on one of the days. That was bizarre.

The LVCC is still like a mile or two off the strip. In summer, this is excruciating. I'm actually in Vegas right now (vacation before vacation) and holy gently caress is it balls hot outside. No matter how big the convention center is, if CCI is going to have their premiere event in LV during summer, everything people want to do needs to be in the convention center. This is and always be the advantage SDCC has over every other entrant. In the 8 years I've been going to SDCC, only once has the weather been hideously hot. As for the construction, who knows if it'll even happen now that the courts shot down the tax increase. I could see SDCC trying to work something out with more hotels to take their ballrooms. The Hilton has 2 other levels of ballrooms it could give if SDCC wanted them badly enough.

I once joked about Vegas but truth is Vegas swallows up everything else instead of the other way around. While theoretically there's space getting to all the stuff outside the convention would be more difficult and more removed. The casinos wouldnt be part of the con also the non convention crowd probably more hostile

The cosplay game in Vegas would be much weaker too as people aren't going to be as wont to be intricate if they're just going to be constantly sweating outside.

xxEightxx posted:This is the second post about the size of the lacc, and it has me a bit confused considering its magnitudes bigger than the San Diego convention center. Why do people think it's smaller? Because it is. I've written about this before, but here: quote:The quoted figures tend to revolve around the size of the convention center. The L.A. Times went so far as to offer alternatives. Essentially, the numbers quoted only take into account the Exhibit Floor i.e. where the booths are set up. People quoting the San Diego Center's 615k sq.ft. are not taking into account the ballrooms, side areas, hallways, and extra space that goes into counting total capacity for a building. So, yeah, you could maybe move the convention to LA or Anaheim if all you care about are the booths, but you'll be fitting a lot fewer people in total. The only convention centers larger than San Diego's that would work for this kind of convention are Chicago (which already has C2E2) and Vegas (which no one legitimately wants unless they care more about parties than the convention). I couldn't be happier to see SDCC stay through 2018. Although it'd be real nice to take the Metro from Burbank downtown to LA, it just wouldn't be the same convention at all. SD does need to get their legal issues regarding a convention expansion worked out, but I personally love crowded-as-gently caress cons because that's what the atmosphere is all about now. I never experienced the old days of walking up the day-of and getting tickets, and I honestly think it would be significantly more boring if that were still the case. Give me the crowded halls, cosplay blocking the floor, and overnight camping anyday. It creates the sense of community that makes SDCC what it is now. A few years ago they said "Hey, we're going to need you to start keeping your badges for the prereg code. We're going to give you a pass this year so that it's not being sprung on you, but please take note that you will have to keep your badges for the prereg code from now on." Two years ago before and after the con they sent out like three or four emails saying "KEEP YOUR loving BADGES" Last year they said "Hey, remember that thing we said last year? Did you do it?" and a whole bunch of people didn't and got wildly upset. So no, not new.

If anyone is bummed that there's almost zero chance of getting into the Star Wars: The Force Awakens panel, don't worry, EW says no new clips or trailers will be screened. Unless something major changes next year, we can pretty much assume any big Marvel or Star Wars stuff will always be held over for D23 from here on out. It would be nice if people realizing the big panels are becoming completely worthless for exclusive experiences translated to lower interest, but at this point people would still fight for tickets and a spot in Hall H even if you told them it was nothing but a secondary producer giving PR-friendly answers.

I've been going for a few years, I think ever since it moved to Anaheim (though the first year I only went Sunday, I wasn't planning on going at all until I found out there was a Community panel). It reminds me of Comic Con around 2006, much more laid back, easier to get into things, easier to wander the floor. Not nearly as many big media panels, which is probably a big part of why it's still laid back. I like it, I got tired of how bad the lines got at Comic Con back in 2012 and haven't been since, but Wondercon is more my speed these days. I do miss the big media panels, but I didn't have to spend any time in lines this year (other than for food trucks) so I call it a win. It's a bummer for me that it's going to be in LA next year, though; I'm pretty close to the Anaheim Convention Center and have a pass that lets me use the Disney parking across the street. Probably not going to go this coming year.

Jarnet posted:Jesus Christing gently caress! Did any of you guys stay at the Embassy Suites downtown last year? Do they seriously charge $42 for guest parking every night on top of the Comic Con rate!!? All hotels have an egregious parking rate. Marriott last year was like $40. I know when I check in tomorrow at the Omni I'm probably looking at and extra $35-40 a night. It's considered a hidden fee and a way they can keep advertised rates low while still raping you in the rear end in a top hat of every extra dime they can. But at least you get free in and outs! I stay in San Diego a lot due to family and friends and stuff and I've never seen one over $20 much less valet only, I'm sure that's much to do with it. That's completely insane The Marriott gaslamp is $40 now too, it definitely wasn't when I stayed there a couple years back.
