I like Geralt's justification if you choose to spare him. It's also funny because not only do you find more trophy heads of his (that Geralt supposes that he also could not sell) in the cat hideaway, but you can also get a trophy for Roach in HoS that originally came from him as well. Poor guy never gets paid.

It’s pitchfork related PTSD.

On the subject of trophies, is it always safe to sell them as soon as you get them (assuming you don’t care about the bonus I mean), or are there some that you have to hang onto for quest purposes? I’m starting my second play through, and I have this nagging feeling that I’m forgetting something special about trophies.

The only one I didn't sell is the giant head from B&W. The bonuses are generally worthless past, I guess, very early game.

15% bonus gold is good if you are about to start the runewright or upgrading your house.

I see what you mean, but it’s not like you can ever look at more than one at a time anyway, you can’t mount them on your wall or anything (...can you?). It feels lore-appropriate to ride back into town with a gross monster head and then sell it for a fraction of what it’s worth

PS If you want to sell trophies, do so at the alchemist outside of Novigrad. He pays pretty decently.

I wonder why arachas and endregas co-habitate with one another since arachas seem to be solitary ambush predators while endregas are like ant colonies.

It was even more confusing in Witcher 2 because the endrega queen contract looked exactly like the arachas model.

Someone, while arguing tree vs crones, said that the tree kills all the people in the village, which undoubtedly kills children as well. But the children in the village are well cared for, while the orphans living with the crones are certainly doomed to die even if they don't go with the crones anyway, since they are only sent to the crones because their family doesn't want or can't feed them.

Thus, the net utility of the crones is superior to that of the tree spirit.

The kids that the baron’s wife is watching end up in Novigrad if you release the tree spirit.

The baby in the oven thing though, I never understood

The premise to the whole thing is both Geralt and Cerys both know they're tricking the demon thing. They have a whole conversation about it "you have to trust me without hesitation" etc. If you know it's a trick the demon will know and it won't work.

Then later she runs into the house and is like here Geralt toss this baby in the oven. For SURE he knows this is part of the trick and trusts her, but it works anyway.

Anyway it's a fun quest but that always bothered me.

The worst part about the quest is that it wants to show Cerys is competent and capable of figuring out the problem, but you're playing a professional monster Hunter and curse remover the game loves to show is competent and capable.

The whole quest could have been fixed by removing the asinine choice between tricking and killing the beast. They should have had Cerys know the beast from Skellige legends, realise she can't tell Geralt the solution and just ask him to trust her. Then burst in later and hand you the Jarl's baby to throw in an oven, while she holds the Jarl's men at bay. That would be a surprising and difficult choice!

Or at least have her fake betraying you. 'I knew you'd never be able to feel real remorse because you were aware we were tricking it, so I had you kill a baby and take on the curse, A jarl's life is more important than a witcher's.' Then reveal the baby's alive.

I think because there are so few missteps in such a long game that we tend to hyper focus on the few that there are.
The Hym quest could have been a littler tighter in its writing and plotting, something like WhiskeyWhiskers idea above. The core idea is excellent, it just needed a little more work.
The other misstep is how Dijkstra behaves after the assasination, a stuipd mistake by a character we know doesn’t make stupid mistakes.

The pig quest is fantastic and was free DLC so make sure you have downloaded all those to access it.

Hunting down every other living soul in the village too - not cool and not good.

As fir the hym quest obs Geralt is guilty about the guards he shanks not about the baby.

So I'm playing through The Witcher 1 again, and even though this is like my 17th time through the game, I noticed some dialogue I hadn't seen before. I was doing that quest where you escort Gramps through the swamp to the Shrine of Melitele, and if you stray off course and take him to other swamp areas, he has bits of dialogue for each area, like a tour guide. He told me about Berengar and the dumbass brick makers when I took him to the clay-pits, for example. I loving love this game!

Been playing it since it came out, even before the enhanced edition, and there's still a handful of options I've never done:

Never let Zoltan get his rear end kicked by the thugs in the Outskirts

Never let Thaler get killed by DeWett and his merry band of racists

Never done any quest resolution in Act V/Murky Waters that wasn't the whole "please everybody" thing.

On my current playthrough I aim to let Thaler die (with the end goal of letting Djikstra kill Roche and Thaler in Witcher 3 for that particular ending) and also maybe siding with the humans to get rid of the Vodyanoi instead of reconciling them both.
