https://www.dvidshub.net/news/471630/us-army-awards-expedited-production-contract-himars-launchers

U.S. dropping a poo poo load (400-800 mil) on an indefinite contract for HIMARs production. Looks like this is to expedite the actual construction of the systems to ensure supply for Ukraine, domestic, and global sales - not for purchasing HIMARs systems directly.

My personal opinion is that this will take 1-2 years from contract finalization to see results. It may encourage the u.s. and allies to release more of their on-hand stocks if they know that more production is spooling up though.

With an amphibious assault on Odessa not very likely there is not much a minesweeper was needed for so it was probably left at the pier at Sebastopol as all the cool kids ran off to Novorossiysk.
Until of course drone delivered sea mines arrive, either a drone leaving a mine or the drone settling on the bottom to be the mine. Someone is working hard on this at the moment I'm sure.

It had 2x 30mm CIWS type guns, so that's two less of those that can shoot down drones (and spray all the houses behind the drones)

They didn't say afaik, but the drone boat clips usually show up online a couple days after it happens.

There's some important details to know here.

1. Gene LeBell didn't just decide to randomly attack a guy and choke him out, Segal had been bragging to the stuntmen and martial arts experts "for some time" that due to his aikido training, it was impossible to choke him out. LeBell called him out and they agreed to put the claim to the test.
2. Gene LeBell is something of a legend in the circles NoiseAnnoys mentioned, to the point where he has created choke holds and submission holds that carry his name
3. Gene Lebell was 59 at the time.
4. LeBell choked Segal out "immediately". Like slapped on the hold, held it until Segal passed out without being able to do anything to get out of it or even fight back meaningfully
5. NoiseAnnoys is using literally correctly. According to eyewitnesses Segal poo poo himself when he was choked to unconsciousness.

I also love LeBell's own comments on the subject.

"When we had a little altercation or difference of opinion, there were thirty stuntmen and cameramen that were watching. Sometimes Steven has a tendency to cheese off the wrong people, and you can get hurt doing that." After being asked whether he was not going to directly confirm it, LeBell said: "Well, if thirty people were watching, let them talk about it."

And finally here is pro wrestling legend (and actual amateur wrestler / martial artist) Bryan Danielson using the LeBell Lock, which he was taught by and named after his grappling teacher, one Gene LeBell.

I have to post this brilliant video Bobby Fingers made of the incident.

The BBC had an article on how Russia has spun up an endless supply of cheap glide bombs to pound static positions. Between the US green-lighting cruise missiles / F-16s with their own glides into Russia to hit the airbases, Patriots being moved up to within arty range, or Ukraine just being expected to take it, what are the options?

This is a much better get if true. They are about the same size, but a Natya is a 70's design without much very expensive equipment, while a Karakurt is one of the most modern combatants in the Russian Navy with one of their very best radars.

Patriot and other long range air defense making it difficult to get in range to drop the glide bombs, destroying launch aircraft on the ground in their airbases, denying launch aircraft necessary parts, pilots, and fuel by destroying other infrastructure, short range air defense to intercept the glide bombs themselves, as far as I know.

Right, but how many of those are viable options on a short enough timeline to prevent the current front lines from being pushed back?

That warm and fuzzy feeling.
I've seen estimates that Ukraine is going to have to weather the growing russian military machine for another year while inflicting as much logistical damage on russian infrastructure as possible. The most important things for ukraine right now is to prevent a general collapse of military and/or civilian morale, or the front line as a whole, because russia has enough bodies to attempt stupid poo poo anywhere on the front line at the moment. While grotesque and usually incompetent, the unending meatwaves put endless pressure upon ukraine that make it difficult to organize a pushback.

The new gear will hopefully blunt (but sadly probably not stop) russian gains until ukranian forces can reorganize, expand, and counter-move.

Just a theoretical Clancy-thought exercise that's been in my head for a while:

People circumnavigated the globe flying a solar-powered plane in 2016.

That tech was sold to another company in 2019 who made it autonomous and claims it can fly for 90 days straight: https://bigthink.com/the-future/solar-plane-us-navy-skydweller/

If someone in the US were to ever scale down one of these autonomous solar planes, sail into international waters, program the thing to fly itself by GPS to a Russian power plant and explode, and sent it on it's way, who gets in trouble for that? Is there something that says citizens can't do war on other countries? What if they do the project secret killdozer-style and no one can pin down where it took off from?

I mean, I guess anyone could do it to anyone else, I'm just using an example of a place that's airdefenseless.
