It was a 'the babyface wins, but then a heel official says "LOL, the rules say you can't win like that" and changes the rules' gimmick match (Awesome pins Storm for 3. Nope, gotta be a 5 count. Pins him for 5. Wait, Texas Deathmatch rules... and so on). Where Lance was the heel. In CANADA. When his whole gimmick in WCW was "I'M A PROUD CANADIAN"

The issue with that is that I feel like it totally ruins Tanahashi's story. Like, Kenny's whole build was "You're a broken down relic who can't go and thinks his style is the best way" and then... he'd just win and be right?

Well I imagine the build might have been different going in if Kenny was staying, though you could have seen it as a "passing of the torch" for Takahashi as well. The guy is 42 years old and beat to hell and back. Having a Five Star match against Omega where he loses isn't the worst way for the guy to start winding down a bit and work with younger guys to get them over. Hell you could have even moved it into a direction with Tana going heel, moving into an easier style to work.

There are a lot of places you could go with it, most probably better than beating Omega then losing to Jay White weeks later.

I think I get sensitive about that because I'm one of the people the Tanahashi story was for. Like I adore that kind of 'aging hero shows he can do it one last time' narrative, and I think ruining it just so Kenny can go "Goodbye and good night, BANG!" in the Dome is kind of soulless. Especially when the build began in like, February last year.

Tanahashi's journey last year was beautiful and about as good as you can get for classic pro-wrestling storytelling. The guy has already had a historic reign in the past, him dropping the title a few weeks after making it to the mountaintop once again doesn't diminish the story told or his overall legacy. Actually, it solidifies both. The whole point is he's past his prime but since he's the Ace of the Universe he still has flashes of greatness. He just can't remain dominant because his greatest adversary now is his own body ravaged by the passage of time.

Anyways, for content, I present to you the wise words of another Ace from an entirely different universe :

And neither are going to go anywhere either. OC isn’t interested in wrestling full time and no one with a major platform is going to hire Nick Gage. Can you imagine what a sanitized PG Nick Gage would even be like?

I don't want to say he was the only, because my memory about that time is...willingly selective considering the sheer volume of awful poo poo visible that whole week/weekend and I could be missing out on some folk, but he was definitely one of The Only wrestlers not just to tweet during the Charlottesville mess, but to tweet in condemnation of it and in support of the Black Lives Matter activists in general

7 years before Darren Young came out to TMZ and brought new life to the entire conversation of openly-out wrestlers in major wrestling promotions, in general and in America, Kevin Nash went to Outsports (at a time when interviewers always had to come to the subjects and ask for time for questions, he went to them, an openly LGBTQ+ sports site) and talked about his support of LGBTQ+ rights and how he wanted to make sure wrestlers felt comfortable being themselves in a locker room he was in, and that he didn't like that people had to feel afraid of that
Fun fact: 6 years after that, a contributor to Outsports ran marathons to raise money for a Chicago charity with the ultimate goal of ending the AIDS epidemic. He found out about it and made a donation to the campaign

He told ESPN 3 years ago that he'd made the decision 6-7 years before that that he agreed to donate his brain and spinal cord to the CTE Center at Boston University and the Concussion Legacy Foundation that Christopher Nowinski started. Nash was one of the first people supportive of what Nowinski was pursuing, by Nowinski's own admission, and has worked with him off and on in the study since their first real talks about it

TL;DR Kevin Nash loving rules and whether it's the first time or fiftieth time someone's found that out and is shocked, I get it, it is a wrestler we're talking about after all, but he's def put in the work
