Are Saturday morning cartoons still a big deal to kids or did streaming/tablets kill that?

We had a moth infestation in one of our closets containing several hand woven rugs. Two of them were beyond repair, but one is still in good enough condition that with a thorough cleaning it should be salvageable.

How can I go about getting all the larva off the rug without damaging it before I take it in for a professional cleaning? Just cold water and scrubbing? I feel like showing up to a place that's full of rugs with a couple hundred wriggling moth grubs is probably a dick move.

No longer a thing sadly

quote:

Fox was the first to give up on the preteen audience; it hasn’t aired a show targeting kids under 13 since 2008. ABC switched to an all-13-16 demo in September 2011, when the network dropped all of its shows targeting kids 12 and younger. CBS discontinued all programming for preteens two years later, and the CW followed suit in 2014.

NBC, the last holdout, has confirmed that it will exit the preteen market in October when it switches to a three-hour bloc of Saturday morning shows targeting kids aged 13-16.

They were killed by the fact cable's been big since the late 80s, so kids wouldn't have to be concentrated on Saturday morning to watch cartoons. Kids can just watch Cartoon Network or Nickelodeon any day. And then yeah, these days you also have the streaming services so there's plenty to watch for kids in households that don't have cable/satellite.

Honestly I rarely ever watched Saturday morning network cartoons as a kid in the 90s myself, since we had cable and you could just watch Nick or CN or like the Family Channel and others that ran a lot of cartoons and kids stuff. We'd occasionally watch the stuff on ABC, but that was all Disney cartoons that also ran on the Disney Channel. There were also plenty of cartoons in the after school hours during the week on like Fox and WB to watch too, which I don't think had been as much of a thing in the 70s and 80s when Saturday morning cartoons were really big? I think that stuff's largely gone away now too, but as I said streaming isn't a big deal to get access to for most kids.

Bugs are extremely resilient creatures- here's what I think you should do to minimize risk to your rug.

Put the rug in a disposable styrofoam cooler (you can get them for about $5) in your yard or on your porch. Buy dry ice and add it to the cooler. Poke a few holes in the lid for gas to escape as it sublimates. Wait a few hours. This will deep freeze the moth larvae and you'll be good to go. Do not do this inside.

Edit: I reiterate, do not do this inside or in an enclosed area because you could asphyxiate yourself.

YouTube's big of course but there's still millions and millions of kids who watch Nickelodeon or Cartoon Network and their spinoffs or other kid networks like Disney Channel and its spinoffs.

Why poke holes in the top? With dart frog keepers, one of the ways you can get rid of insect pests (millipedes and nemerteans - these carnivorous worm things) from a tank is to remove your frogs, add dry ice, seal it up with tape, etc., and let the CO2 gas out the inverts. Works really well.

Netflix and other streaming services. Not only are Saturday morning cartoons not a thing anymore, my 7 year old literally doesn't understand the concept of something on TV coming on at a particular time. If she wants to watch Frozen, clickity-click, we watch Frozen. If she wants to skip to a particular part, there we go. If you said "that doesn't come on until 8", she'd just look at you with confusion.

I grew up a 90s kid with cable but definitely watched Saturday morning cartoons and remember the various lineups. It was the only time they air new episodes of syndicated shows you'd watch on UPN, WB, or local TV before school. Shows like Recess and Pepper Ann on ABC, Yugioh and Sonic on FOX, and I ~think~ WB had new Pokemon. FOX used to show the Megaman cartoon in the mid 90s too.

It's completely dead now though.

Call them - they probably deal with this all the time. Likely response will be to bring it in double bagged in plastic and they will take it from there.

Is there a way to store my email address on my iphone (5s), so that I don't have to type it in every time I'm prompted for it while setting up an account or logging in somewhere? I have a longass email address and it's so annoying to type that in on a touchscreen all the time. I guess I could store it in the Notes app and just copy and paste it into an email field, but it would be awesome if it would pop up as an autofill option when I started typing the first couple of letters.

A (maybe not small) question for work: Is it possible to have 2 public ip addresses with just the one router if I set up a guest network? So people on the guest network would have a different public IP than those on the "main" network, so to speak? We're on Virgin as our ISP. Assume from the poor wording that I don't know much about networking.

I'm looking for an adhesive to stick some metal magnets to the back of my iPhone. I bought one of those magnetic phone holders for my car but the adhesive is worn out and doesnt stick to the back of my phone when it's attached to the phone holder. I'd use a dab of a hot glue gun but I'm not sure how easily that will come off my iPhone 6 if I decide I don't want it on it

This will depend on whether your ISP chooses to offer that service. Most ISPs will only provide a single public IP unless you pay extra for it, and they may require you to get a different modem and router to support it.

Buy a small roll of VHB tape. However, Anything that's going to stick well. something a smooth as the back of an iphone isnt going to be very easy to remove. If you use tape, you could just remove it and reapply as needed.

What are you trying to accomplish?

Having an additional IP is completely unnecessary for having a guest network.

Without going into too much detail I work with at-risk adults so I've been asked to look into a separate public ip for them and one for staff so should anyone do something online that they shouldn't then its easier to trace (and all us staff wont get our poo poo seized if anything does happen). I was hoping that something along the lines of a guest network on the same router with a different public address would maybe be possible.

If someone starts downloading child porn the cops aren't going to not seize your poo poo just because you have a seperate IP, but are on the same premises.

A better idea might be to point your DNS to something like openDNS which just won't resolve sketchy names, porn, known phishing sites, etc.

Thanks, I'll forward that on to the boss: I thought from when I was first asked to look into it that something along those lines is the safest and easiest option, but you wouldn't believe what a minefield this stuff is when it comes to mental capacity/personal freedoms and rights etc and filters would probably be considered (legally, if not morally) "infringement". That's for another thread though.

I'm not positive if this is different on an older model, but on my iPhone 6 and 7, it will recognize what the field is asking for, and suggest things that I have put in the contact card associated with "me." I have the same issue with a dumb long email, and this works in safari. Works with phone numbers, addresses, etc. it may be Safari-specific now that I think of it. Namely take note that it doesn't apply in apps. So go to your contact card (top line in contacts), then you can rename the address (like "junk" instead of "work" or "email"). I now have two email addresses show up in safari when I enter the cursor into an email field.

What would make you think that anyone wouldn't immediately assume staff would use the guest network if they want to do something sketchy and now it's just as likely to "get [your] poo poo seized"?

There are solutions to this problem, like captive portal authentication with logging, as well as traffic filtering to keep people from even being able to get to sketchy stuff. They all cost money, and aren't the kind of thing the average non-tech-worker is likely to be able to set up and configure themselves. They also require ongoing maintenance and subscription services.

Thanks for more info- the more i can get the more i can convince the higher ups this is unfeasible and that if its that big a concern then the best solution is to change the password to something convoluted, not give it to the dodgy resident and say "sorry you are too big a risk to the others, no wifi for you." if they aren't willing/able to put a filter on it. As I mentioned before infringement of rights is a constant battle with duty of care. Its basically a shared house I work in so IT infrastructure is a Virgin superhub and thats it.

Their logic/train of thought is "well if Mr X gets his own IP then if something bad does happen it'll get tracked to that and not affect everyone else". I did explain thst it was probably not thst simple.

Nothing has happened but suddenly there's a suspicion about it; I've been designated the 'computer guy' at work because i know my arse from a keyboard and whilst I'll cop to my ignorance about this stuff it still gets shufted to me to look into.

Bottom line: this all comes bak to your (company/group's) account so none of it matters until after the fact if you happen to have the right things to prove which user caused the problem. No matter how many IP address, etc.

Have sketchy guy go buy a hotspot or give him money to put tethering on his phone. Then it's in his name. Done.

This is both simpler and cheaper than anything else you're likely to come up with.

Ironically, you'll need to sign up for some services to tell marketing companies you no longer want their services:

https://www.optoutprescreen.com - This will stop financial offers through the mail for either 5 years if done electronically or permanently if done through postal (sounds like you've done this before)
https://dmachoice.thedma.org/index.php - This is for the Direct Marketing Assosiation. This is a shared list that most companies use to send junk mail. Not sure how long they stop sending, but you can do it electronically.
https://www.catalogchoice.org/ - This is where you can opt out of receiving catalogs from stores you may be bought something from.

There's also apps like Paper Karma that allow you to take a photo of junk mail and they will figure out where to send a removal request to on your behalf.
