I'm interested in grime but I know absolutely nothing about it, can someone recommend me artists? I really like Dizzee Rascal's debut album Boy in da Corner but nothing after that. I like this song a lot too. I have checked out big names like Wiley, Skepta etc but most of them sound too... pop? I guess. I am interested in stuff that sounds darker, more aggressive maybe. Thanks in advance

edit - ha I just found the UK Bass thread with a write-up on grime, but would still appreciate recommendations

Darq E Freaker is a pretty great grime producer. He released a tune with Danny Brown recently too which I like a lot.

Are there songs/bands out there that make "western" music? Or Western sounding/influenced music? Something like DJ Champion's Chill 'em All, or like the second half of this track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrBZeWjGjl8. Or even good soundtracks to go with?

I just really like the way that kinda stuff sounds.

I hope this isn't too vague, but when I'm walking home from work sometimes I like to chill out and listen to stuff that's ambient, dreamy, trippy, etc. - but with enough guitar to give it a bit of zing...I'm thinking primarily of Robin Trower's "Bridge of Sighs":

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1g9Hs3rnd6s

I guess some of Pink Floyd's stuff might count, but some of it goes from trippy to agressive, like the tracks from Animals. Still, I'm open to suggestions.

Oh really? Well in that case

The Moe Greene Specials
Calexico
The Hellbenders (kind of on the silly side)
Assorted Sadies tracks
The Twin Tones

...and the big name of course is Ennio Morricone, but maybe you knew that

I suppose it could be classified as raggaeish with heavy vocoder use?

For some reason, I've been hit with an urge to listen to celtic music lately. It's nice for studying and working. Sometimes it's a bit too happy, though.

Without sounding like a gigantic dork, I was hoping I could find some instrumental music that seems middle-ages inspired but more "dark" and fantasy'esque . These two songs from the Diablo 2 soundtrack are kind of what I'm thinking of:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGTUz4OnzdM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=layjWs2IpS4

If possible, I'd prefer something that wasn't too over-the-top (i.e. not written with the intent of "sounding epic"), but more ambient instead.

The LotR movie soundtracks have some songs reminiscent of that style--but I was hoping I could get some other suggestions outside of movies and video games.

I'm interested in discovering some more really quality hip-hop. Some of my favorites include Juggaknots (especially Juggaknots... drat they are amazing), Company Flow, Cannibal Ox, Mr. Lif, I Self Divine, ATCQ, Common, Blackstar (Mos and Talib). Beastie Boys of course, RIP MCA. 36-Chambers Style Wu-Tang. Definitely seem to prefer the East Coast, and New York-based stuff especially. Outkast is amazing, though, too.

I also want to find some more prolific songwriters with profound lyrics. Tom Waits, Steve Earle, Elliot Smith, Neil Young, Leonard Cohen are a few I love that come to mind.

These are pretty generic requests, I think, but

For hip-hop, check out Kendrick Lamar's Section.80 mixtape/album. I started listening to it last summer (took a few listens before it grew on me) and it still gets pretty decent rotation.

Song-writers: Have you listened to Gram Parsons? He was a huge influence on Steve Earle and the entire country/rock/folk hybrid genre. For more folky folk, I'm a fan of Iron & Wine and also Ray Lamontagne.

Edit: vvv Yeah, can't believe I forgot about Townes Van Zandt. Listen to him.

That's cool though-- didn't realize that Steve Earle's son was a musician, and Steve gave him a middle name as a nod to Townes!

This might sound kinda obvious, but if you only know him from Born in the USA you should check out Bruce Springsteen's quieter stuff like Nebraska. There's also Lucero, who are a bit more country-rock. Josh Ritter's also good, as are the Felice Brothers and William Eliot Whitmore.

This is only one song, but m83's "Midnight Souls Still Remain" fits this pretty well. The song just plays a note on a synth for about 11 minutes, harmonizing it with two other notes one at a time by subtly switching between each every few seconds.

The Rhino compilation, One Kiss Can Lead to Another is really good and comprehensive. Doesn't include the obvious choices, so it has a ton of artists who had one single that you'd otherwise miss. There's a one disc version on Spotify. Also the Phil Spectre Back to Mono compilation is another good starting point.

I checked back a few pages and didn't see anything, so I'm wondering what you all would recommend to a fan of Amos Lee? I'm normally a fan of classic rock/metal, southern rock, that type of thing. I wound up seeing him in concert with a friend, and have been a huge fan since, and I'm wondering if it's a fluke or if there's similar artists out there I might like.

Just listened to the live version of Oingo Boingo's "We Close Our Eyes" from their Farewell tour (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrPexqOR_T8). Are there any other bands that use one with a similar sound/tone?

You done fucked up now!
So I'm looking for something. I listen to a lot of metal. Mostly progressive technical stuff (Symphony X, Dream Theater, Leprous, etc) and a lot of death metal, but I'm looking for something less screamy. I don't like a lot of straight up prog (RPWL or any of the straight up 70's prog sounds, although I listen to it often because there's simply nothing else out there like it. I tried listening to The Mars Volta on somebody's recommendation (based on the odd time signatures and technical stuff) and the odd time signatures and technical stuff is cool but I can't stand their voices, same with Circa Survive. I've recently can't get enough of Dead Letter Circus. Who else might I like?

tl;dr:

like: progressive technical stuff like Symphony X, Dream Theater, Leprous, Death Metal, Dead Letter Circus

don't like: straight 70's Prog, djent, tech-death, mathcore, whiny emo voices

want: Leprous to make another album (and more stuff like them and / or Dead Letter Circus)
